Greater Western Victoria Rebels wtf? Why did they change their name? Its horrible and a mouthful to say. Makes it look like they are sponsored by the GWS Giants who I cannot stand :mask:
Because they represent Western Vic, not just North Ballarat. Rebranded during the off season.

Wonder if they are also trying to distance themselves from struggling North Ballarat VFL franchise.

More interested in Johnston really. Wellings has horrible disposal.
I'm really interested in Johnston. Sounds like he has a lot of scope for improvement too. Can see him being a bit of a bolter this year. Hopefully see him playing midfield at times this season.

Did you watch the Falcons v Oakleigh game the other day?

Like the look of Matt Ling, really agile and quick and Worpel was okay though I can see why he might be available for us late first round. Despite what the bests on the TAC site say I'd just about have had Miers as BOG looks like an AFL player already, reminds me of Dahlhaus when he first started playing with us as a small forward.

Unfortunately I generally don't get to watch any TAC cup footy which is a shame, although I try and watch as much of the champs as possible and the all star games when they are streamed on the AFL website. Miers sounds like he has a lot of qualities to like and would add something different at his position with his high endurance and ability to tackle and apply forward pressure. If you have the ability to sustain that sort of pressure over the course of a match then you have a spot on an AFL list for sure. In his draft year, the reason Dahlhaus didn't go ND was his kicking. Would fit well in our team I reckon.

Watching the replay of the Chargers v Falcons game now. Agree regarding Ling and Miers. Hadn't seen anything of Miers until now but a few other posters have been pretty keen on him, can see why. Really opportunistic and hard at it. Ling has real smarts and speed about him with ball in hand, will be interesting to see if he can match it with the best as the season progresses.

Searle and Noble looked good from the Oakleigh vs Geelong game. I'm a bit hesitant around Higgins, has some terrific traits but a very inconsistent ball user, as an undersized accumulator I reckon there are better options for the Dogs. Miers looks a very likely type. Wooller was quiet, haven't seen much of him at all so will be interested to get some vision of him at his best. Louis Cunningham did some nice things too.

Both have elite athletic traits too Ling ran a 7.899 agility test at the TAC testing earlier on in the year and Miers ran a 15.05 beep.

Found the replay of Geelong vs. Oakleigh and watched the first half. Miers almost unsighted in the first quarter but looked good with ball in hand in the second. Wooller would've had about 5 or 6 touches for the half but looked very skilled for someone his height, and attended centre bounces where he won a few clearences. Won one clearence that I saw directly opposed to Worpel at one stage who is considered one of the better clearence players in the comp. Plenty to like about him at this stage. Ling looked very rushed/untidy with ball in hand and his kicking didn't look great. Limited vision I know but with his frame you'd hope his kicking would stand out. Not a massive fan of Higgins and like others at his height more in this draft class. Nothing to me stands out enough to see him having a real impact at the next level.

He got better as the game went on. Got some class.

What stood out was his speed and agility to burst out of defense and go on runs. Can't teach that. Would definitely need work to make sure he doesn't rush his disposal as he seemed to do that quite a bit. Reckon he could be a devloping rookie prospect someone you would spend a few years on ironing out the kinks.

He was okay but not fantastic. Neither he or Worpel looked like they would go top 10 at the end of the year. Cassidy Parish is a bull but is a bit sloppy with his disposal, reminds me of Dunkley.

Agree on Worpel, he didn't have his best game but he needs to be a bit more damaging to go top 10 you'd think. Wooller's day would've looked better had he kicked a few goals, but it seems he is being used in a fairly unfamiliar position as a midfielder a fair bit and considering that, he looked pretty good. At the very least it shows another side of his game. I still say he's a 10-15 prospect but it also seems like this was his worst showing of the season so far and was still named in his side's bests. Clubs will be attracted to his versatility at 193cm in the same way they will be attracted to Darcy Fogarty's although Fogarty's midfield game is far more polished.

Nick Coffield 34 touches and a goal. Not a bad day from the tall utility.

Keen to watch him this week on the stream. He tested very quickly at the TAC testing for someone who is 190cm also is from Eltham and the boys we have got from there go alright.

An under-16 grand final set Calder Cannons key forward Noah Balta on the path towards joining the NAB AFL Academy and becoming one of the TAC Cup’s top 2017 AFL Draft prospects.

Balta’s 2015 season with Essendon Doutta Stars in the Essendon District FL broke him out of a football funk that could have seen the 194cm 17-year-old lost to the game.

His performance in the Stars’ under-16 premiership triumph provided the foundation for an impressive 2016 campaign at Calder in which he booted 18 goals in eight games.

Balta’s form was recognised late last year with elevation to the AFL Academy alongside junior teammate and good friend Cameron Rayner of the Western Jets.

“It was that game (that changed things) – when something’s on the line, I realise how well I can play,” Balta said of the under-16 grand final. “Cam got named best-on-ground but all the other boys were saying I should have got it!

“I thought: ‘Why can’t I play like that all the time?’ and then I just started going for it.

“In under-12 football I was a good player, but everyone started to catch up to me and I think it kind of got my head down. I started to become an average player and talked myself down, but I started lifting again and realised what I could do.

“It was that whole under-16 season. I worked with (former Essendon and Geelong ruckman) John Barnes that pre-season – he helped me with my skills and he’s very honest with me.”

Balta named Barnes as one of the most significant influences on his football career to date, but his addition to an AFL Academy Level Two squad including 22 other TAC Cup players should see a few more influential names added to that list.

Balta attended the Academy’s annual high-performance training camp in the United States in January, spending a week training at the IMG Academy in Florida before a further week in Los Angeles under the eyes of former AFL champions such as head coach Luke Power and assistants Brad Johnson, Peter Sumich and Nick Dal Santo.

“They’ve had the AFL experience and I want to be like them and do what they’ve done,” Balta said of his Academy coaches. “To do that, I’ve got to listen to what they say and really take it in.

“I learnt I could push harder than I thought I could (on the US camp). You think you’ve got a certain level of potential but then once you think you’ve reached it, you just blast right past it with an experience like that.

“On one of the big days we had a 3km time trial and then sprints, and a couple of boys –myself included – were really fatigued and we kind of slowed down before the line and had to re-do it.

“Everyone got behind you. From a group that was nothing together (before the camp) to how we’ve bonded now, it’s really something special.”

Cannons Talent Manager Ian Kyte has seen Balta fully invest himself in his football during his time at the club, with the resolution of eyesight problems also a key factor in his rise to prominence.

“He’s dramatically improved his footy over the last seven or eight months,” Kyte said.

“That’s been helped by getting contact lenses, so he actually sees the game and what’s going on down the other end a lot better than he used to. We’ve found that’s really helped his marking and his depth perception of where the ball is.”

Balta only wears the contact lenses while playing football but has noticed he’s running under the ball less often and that marks had “started clunking a bit more”.

Kyte said Balta would likely be used mostly as a power forward in 2017, but would also pinch-hit in the ruck and “could nearly play as an on-baller, which we did with him a couple of times last year”.

No matter where he plays on the field this season, Balta wants to throw everything into making it work. His main goal for 2017 is to be selected by an AFL club come November, but he won’t let his head drop if that dream doesn’t come to fruition.

“I just want to know I’ve done the best I could and that I couldn’t push any harder,” Balta said.

It’s a mindset far from the one he was in just a couple of years ago.

Watched the first quarter and Petruccelle just shows flashes of brilliance. He has a level of play that can separate him from the rest so I hope he shows consistent improvement this season.

Bailey Williams impressed me, I assume he's bottom age but he's got a good leap on him and at 198cm he's one to watch for sure. Took a big intercept pack mark on the back flank and can play forward too.
