I note that Knightmare cites underwhelming development from Brander over the past 12 months as a factor that limits how high he'll be selected - reasonable comment or is it overplayed? For mine, if a KPP doesn't show enough improvement (injuries aside) you cross them off the first round list. That combined with Bishop's assertion that a "fair few" clubs don't think he's top ten material scares me off.

If we go to the draft with 9 and 11 it's two of Coffield, Richardson, O'Brien and Stephenson for me. Later/rookie selections on best available - if we can snag a quicker inside mid and someone with genuine forward nous I'll be stoked.

O'Brien way too outside for my tastes that early. Richards I'm warming too, won't be there at our second rounder. Coffield and Stephenson the dream.

We've seemingly managed to turn literally everybody on our list into midfielders so I think we're a side that is well placed to take a punt on an outside type. You've no doubt seen more of him than I have, though.

I just can't get myself excited for many of the other guys expected to be around the mark: Brayshaw, Hayes, Constable, Clark, Higgins, Brander, Fogarty, Balta...I'm sure the majority will be good players, I just can't get excited for them for some reason.

We'll be f***ing laughing all the way to the bank if we can steal Coffield and Stephenson. About a 0.1% chance of happening though.

Also not really big on O'Brien, definitely not with pick 11.

It is because they are boring apart from maybe Balta
At least boring compared to drafts from the previous few years.

I like O'Brien. There is a strong link between having top tier endurance in your draft class and making it as an outside player at AFL level. O'Brien also has some speed. Will be watching his 2K time trial closely. If he at all stands out then I wouldn't hesitate picking him early despite his low production this year. Very little continuity in his football this year and we all know what that can do to a player's season at AFL level. I expect him to bounce back and if his endurance is up to scratch I expect him to be a very good player at the next level too.

The mix of endurance and speed is what made me very interested as well. It's a rare combination, particularly when talking about juniors. Add supreme skill to the mix and outside or not - provided they don't completely shit the bed under pressure - you have a very, very good prospect.

While I know it's all opinion based on who they would take, I would be a bit surprised if the club took O'Brien that early. The last pure outside player we took that high was Jason Tutt (maybe you could include Howard as well) and then we've made some changes to our draft strategy since then. We normally go for someone with a bit more hardness early and then go for the real outside players later. I doubt we would change that strategy since it basically won us a premiership. I think drafting a Richards/Coffield is more align with what the club would do if we do chase some outside players.

I think if we get two high picks it will be one "Safe" pick (Constable or Brayshaw) + a riskier pick (Richards or Naughton).

Similar to the Macrae/Stringer draft and the Dunkley/Collins draft.

Is Naughton the tall CHB from WA? He sounds like a poor man's Lever, which is pretty good.

Yes. The issue is that there are quite a lot of intercepting talls which can be seen as 'poor men's Lever' in just about every draft. What made Lever so special is how quickly and easily he took to AFL level. The success he's shown early and the potential he still has is very rare, and impossible to predict for future draftees, despite how talented they might seem. I think Naughton is talented and should make a fist of his AFL chance, but I would caution against hoping for Lever-like results until he starts to really develop in the league.

Thing is, currently, intercepting talls aren't our most pressing need. We have Adams, Young and Wood who are all either established best 22 players or future best 22 players. Naughton hasn't impressed me as a one-on-one defender, and with Morris to go I feel that's the area we should target with a late/rookie pick. KPDs (and ruckmen) are the types that have the highest chance of success from late picks as they do not require a high skill level. Someone like Josh Jaska I would much prefer as a genuine one-on-one defender with excellent athleticism and rebounding ability. I'm hoping we can nab him with a rookie pick.
