He has no speed. 3.1s 20m sprint, and it's always been one of his weaknesses.

Whist it isn't a weaknesses, he didn't even get in the top 10 in agility to compensate for it as well.

Most people compare Higgins to Greene, but quite frankly I can't see him becoming anything more then a poor man's Toby Greene. Greene tested better athletically, is slightly taller and has that agro which makes him the footballer that he is.

His lack of pace is deceiving. He looks quick because his legs are moving quick. Just doesn't move quick. This is tricking some in to having higher opinions on him.

Neither was Tony Liberatore or Greg Williams.

The game was massively different between then and now. Todays game recruiters seems to put more emphasis on athleticism and less on pure footballing skills. Cant get away with lack of speed in general as much these days

Not super keen on Higgins but he does seem to have elite drive/motivation that alone will no doubt see him eek out a decent career

So let's ignore those who consistently make the best players list, win awards, etc in real matches and just follow the draft combine results.

They weren’t forwards

Splitting hairs a little.

Look, I am not saying we should go for Higgins as a priority, just noting that he regularly is listed around our picks in the draft prospects analysis coverage. I also don't subscribe to the bigger is always better view. You need a mix and people are kidding themselves if they think they can convert players into roles they are not suited for based on the fact that there are a couple of freaks out there like the Bont. Is our list full of short people? We have only two truly smaller players, Daniel and Honeychurch, the latter having a one year contract only. I regard Dahl as the lower end of medium size, Higgins is similar.

#30 North Melbourne –Billy Hartung (VIC – Mid/Fwd)
Height: 176cm, Weight: 71kg, DOB: 24/01/1995
Recruited from: Dandenong Stingrays
Style: Brent Harvey
Player comparison: Travis Colyer
Range: 15-40
Profile: Hartung is one of if not the elite runner of this draft. Has a 16+ beep and will run and carry the ball the length of the field if you let him. His real point of difference is his breakaway speed, Hartung breaks away from every contest and really takes on the game and any time he gets ball in hand he looks to go and cover 30m through his run and carry knowing that that’s how he’s best going to put his stamp on the game doing it at speed. He’s also a very high production player who finds the ball so easily. Very willing tackler. Hartung is also a very clean user of the footy by both hand and foot and can hit his targets or hit the scoreboard if you give him the time and space to execute. At his size he likely always remains an outside player and is most likely to find a role for a team in a forward half his lack of height and size may not be get as exposed'

I feel as though they are pretty similiar to be honest, maybe l like O'Brien though a little more.

Edit:

From here.

O'Brien is a bit bigger than Hartung and marks well overhead which gives him a few more tools. I see your point though I can see him ending up as a Hartung, but I can also see him ending up as a Gaff.

I don't think he will necessarily end up like Hartung, I am sure I could have found a similar write up for a player that become sucessful

On paper ALL players can be written up to sound fantastic, I am just extremely skeptical because if a player had no faults. Why is it that he isn't going top 5?

I don't want someone that could eek out a decent career a pick 9, I want someone that could be an elite player. I don't see Higgins as a potential elite player, that's my point.

Are there very many "potential elite players" in this draft though? The consensus seems to be no, with the drop off happening right around our pick. If LDU, Dow, Cerra, Rayner, Coffield, Stephenson, Bonar and Brayshaw are off the board, who's the next potentially elite player you see?

Fogarty. Would rather Fogarty than Bonar. Constable would be a good option too

I have trouble remembering a draft with so many KPD options
with Elite traits Naughton, Balta, Kreuger, Taylor, Clavarino,
Amartey and Petty even Brander has played both ends.

I think there's potentials like Brander and Fogarty. I thought last year they showed that their best is as good as anyone in the draft. They have the talent to be elite players, whether they can get it together is another story.

I see elite player in Murphy if he can make the transition into the midfield as well. He certainly has the potential to do it, but he comes with more risk because he hasn't yet shown that ability and is still quite raw defensively.

I don't see it, but many believe Constable is another one.

Balta perhaps as well.

So I believe there's a few to pick from there, but there's more question marks on some of them so you have to weigh that up.

But my pick is Ed Richards, I have him as the next best player after those 8 names you mentioned. I think he could become an elite player if he can get his endurance up to a higher standard to play in the midfield, that's the only thing missing in his game IMO. When he has played minutes in the midfield he's been impressive, I think more so then Coffield for example. His improvement rate has been huge, he was only seen as a rookie at the start of the year. He also has plenty of upside to come as he came into the TAC system late because of a late growth spurt. And finally he's a very good character with some leadership qualities, so he's likely to get the best out of himself.

So with his high level improvement rate, upside and character, I believe these are the types that usually go from strength to strength in the AFL. Dalrymple has made a living off drafting those types. I also don't really see him as much of a risk as he's shown enough for me. I think at worst he ends up a good half back flanker if he can never make the transition into the midfield. He also fits us on a needs basis as well, adding some speed and skill to the side.

Thanks for the write up, I appreciate it.

Brander terrifies me because of his relative stagnation. Limited year-to-year improvement is a major red flag with a key position player and enough for me to lose all interest in him as a first round prospect. I also don't think he's a great fit - I don't see a key forward and I'm not sure adding another raw, developing key defender is a sound decision.

You know I'm a big Murphy fan. I don't think we would be the right situation for Constable and Balta to fall into; I don't think they'd have the best chance of succeeding at the Dogs for varying reasons.

Richards I just really struggle to place but that's mostly because of a tiny sample size. I thought he looked a bit scrappy under pressure but that's basically one game's worth of viewing.

Richards wasn't good in the all stars game, but it was his first game on the elite stage so I can forgive him. He's usually pretty good under pressure and it's one of the reasons why I like him in the midfield. He missed the champs through injury and hasn't ever really been involved in any of the junior level elite. You can understand why he struggled to pick up the tempo a bit.

But yeah I don't really disagree on any of the other stuff you said. The only thing regarding Murphy is there's a bit of unknown on him. Too much to take him at pick 9 for mine, I would be much more comfortable using 16.

CARLTON could secure No.1 draft pick fancy Cameron Rayner next month as Brisbane Lions and Fremantle consider drafting Vic Country midfielders with the first two selections.

Recruiters say Rayner, 18, has the “Dustin Martin blueprint”, although the explosive Western Jet believes he plays more like Melbourne bull Christian Petracca.

Clubs are finding it difficult to separate Rayner, Luke Davies-Uniacke and Paddy Dow as this year’s cream.

Davies-Uniacke — nicknamed LDU — and Dow are considered slimmer flight risks for the Lions and Dockers, who lost homesick youngsters Josh Schache and Lachie Weller this month.

Davies-Uniacke’s mother owns a house in Brisbane, where she lived for two years, and the keen surfer from Rye would also enjoy the waves at Perth’s beaches.

The question mark on him is his endurance. But he would be a dream fit for the Blues as they chase goalkicking power in their engine room after Bryce Gibbs’ exit.

Rayner won five flags and six best-and-fairests at Hillside and was nicknamed “Hollywood” by a junior coach for his goalkicking flair.

North Melbourne holds the No.4 selection. It is likely to consider Jaidyn Stephenson and Adam Cerra.
Midfielder Andrew Brayshaw is firming as a top-10 *!selection. Western Bulldogs would be pleased to land the brother of Melbourne’s Angus at No.9.

Three clubs have two top-10 picks — the Dockers (Nos.2 and 5), the Blues (Nos.3 and 10) and St Kilda (Nos.7 and 8).
For the first time Greater Western Sydney does not have a top-10 selection after activating 19 in the past five drafts.

Luke Davies-Uniacke could also be the first selection.
The Dockers are expected to grab the best tall to go with one of Davies-Uniacke, Dow or Rayner.

They have previously been linked to Sam Hayes but clubs believe Peel Thunder’s Aaron Naughton is more likely.

Taking Naughton would gazump Collingwood’s interest in the 194cm intercepting defender. The Magpies hold the No.6 pick, their only selection in the first two rounds.

Aidan Bonar could leap into the top 15, but is laced with risk.

The powerful Dandenong Stingray recovered from his second knee reconstruction late in the season.

Another reporter saying Freo will grab a tall. Collingwood are interested in Naughton too, that's good for us.

Not my point, VD said he had speed, was just correcting him.

Fair enough but I must say Higgins can't be that slow if he is rated between pick 8 and 13 (from the range of lists I've seen). There is a difference between Combine sprint tests and a real game. For example, how fast can the player run when he has to gain control of the ball. Let us take Bob Murphy, for example. As we all saw over a decorated career, Bob had the ability to gain control of the ball while running flat out. That was the key to his one on one contest winning, line breaking and tackle evading speed. So many other players who might well beat him in a 20m sprint test have to slow down to try and control the ball because they lack the skills and the hand eye co-ordination to do it flat out.

Yeah like I said im not that keen on him either, just impressed by his drive/motivation which does at least mean he's unlikely to be a bust.
