True, but we've traded in or signed a number of KPPs at trade time or close to it (Boyd, Hamling, Shache, Trengove) so the mantra of best available at the draft and trading for needs seems to something we stick to.
We did buck the trend by taking a ruckman in the first round last year that some touted as a top 10 pick and he has taken talls late (including last year).

My worry is we go too tall (I never thought I'd say this as a Bulldog fan) - we're close to the tallest list in the comp and there were times in the last two years that we played one legitimate KPD with mid sizers and smalls to provide a truck-load of counter attack. As teams get smaller in the forwardline will we seriously load up on KPDs?

Im saying dont not take him because hes tall :D Take him because he is best available.

Is this really the case to any extreme degree? Many of the best sides still play two or three key forwards. Key defenders in general are still needed, it's just that we specifically are well covered in that area and also like you say have managed to paper over cracks with undersized guys like Moz with his freakish one on one ability and Easton with his athleticism.

Admittedly Naughton is a great athlete and more of a third tall type which may fit but then as you mention with our counter attacks he'd be a potential liability in that area with his ball use.

3rd tall with questionable disposal skills doesnt sound great, but Morris made a pretty good career - you just got to be awesomely good at it

We have also just finished a year we’re we massively needed a quality KPD all year!!

I don’t think we are all of a sudden blessed with quality options.

I think it’s an easy decision to pick a quality KPD over a quality outside mid.

Not blessed with options but
- gave Collins another year
- Roberts another couple
- blooded Young in that position rather than CHF
- Moved Cordy back to the backline
- Have Adams on the return
- Recruited Trengrove to play there.

Should we turn around and draft Naughton its clearly not unfair for some to question our recruiting strategies and balance of our list

I’ve always liked fiery redheads myself....
Adds another dimension to the old draft conundrum:
Best Available / List Deficiencies / Best Hair

As if it wasn't hard enough already.

The strongest rumours seem to indicate we're into Constable (slow inside mid with below average endurance) or Naughton (KPD with questionable kicking action) at pick 9.
Excited for Friday? Brisbane will take L Fogarty at 15 to screw with our plans a little further.

Haven't liked the rumours coming out of today....
- Swans meeting with L Fogarty and Jack Higgins
- Lions keen also on either at 15.

I cant see us getting a small fwd given whats going around.
But may well get two of this batch

Nathan MURPHY Hunter CLARK
Nicholas COFFIELD Aaron NAUGHTON
Lachlan FOGARTY Jack HIGGINS

I'm a little bemused by all the arguments for "best available". Our picks at 9 & 16, you would have to think that the difference between 'best and 2nd best available' are more than likely to be seriously marginal at the very most. Sure, if you have top 3-5 picks the differences could be significant, but I doubt they likely are later in the draft. That aside, who is the 'better' player is totally subjective any way, given with 17-18 y o's you have no objective data of their performance at AFL level anyway to base assessment on, merely underage performances to go on, which isn't exactly comparable. I'm thinking that if differences are going to be marginal, go for the player who most nearly meets our list weaknesses, if we are looking at marginal differences. If one player available is clearly head and shoulders above anyone else left available, then that is different, all be it improbable I'm thinking.

Murphy & Clark would be a fantastic return for picks 9&16. If we took Coffield or L.Fogarty instead of one of those I'd be quite OK with it.
Not so keen on the others.

Who's saying that?

I like Murphy, but I'm still sceptical that he will be top 10 pick.
Draft Rumours thread, so obviously big grain of salt. But he's now been linked to us, St Kilda, Collingwood and Fremantle and I think I remember someone said North at 4 even.
