2017 Draft rumours

It's only seen as "open" because Brisbane have the 1st pick and the "go home" factor has become a big thing supposedly (at least in the media). The consensus of Rayner as the #1 prospect seems just as much, probably more so, than McGrath was last year.

McGrath, McCluggage, Taranto, Ainsworth, Petrevski-Seton were all in the mix for top 3 last year. Rayner, UDL, Dow, Cerra, Brayshaw are in the mix for top 3 this year.

Is this a similar phenomenon to "this year's draft is weak, next year's draft will be a super draft"?

To be fair Daniher was never an option and Mccrae had a breakout year this year, so good for him. Grundy was a ruck that GWS didn't need and Wines should have been selected. I don't really like SOS because of his Dorodo style crap but he's picked well at the blues...he and his team.

Grundy was a ruck we didn’t need??

We had an aged ruck and a forward/ruck. We would love to have had Grundy then and now. How he picked that absolute hack O’Rourke above Wines when we needed bigger bodied players (at that time) is something only he can explain. He was shit for us but he was only learning on the job and planning for his real job.

Interesting to see that in the mock draft, which is more a "needs" draft, on the AFL website that Twomey has suggested Fogarty at #6 to the pies. Im pretty sure l have heard him also say previously that the Pies wont use 6 on Fogarty!!

Macrae was 2nd in the B&F in 2014 - FWIW we were very close to selecting Mayes instead of Macrae.

It was their thoughts on what they think clubs should pick. He may have heard that they aren't interested but still has the personal opinion that he would be a good fit.

Some players will be running a 2km time trial this Friday:

TOP DRAFT prospect Cam Rayner will have a final opportunity to stake his claims for the No.1 pick with a running test in front of clubs on Friday.

The Western Jets star, who is a leading candidate to be the Brisbane Lions' first choice at the NAB AFL Draft next Friday, will be one of at least five players to run the 2km time trial at Etihad Stadium after being injured at last month's draft combine.

Rayner's explosive streak, his goalkicking prowess and strong overhead marking have made him the most exciting player in this year's draft pool, but clubs have held some concerns over his endurance base and ability to play in the midfield at AFL level.

However, after sitting out the combine with a knee complaint, a strong run in the time trial on Friday could be the final tick for recruiters weighing him up as a top selection.

Darcy Fogarty, Callum Coleman-Jones and Charlie Constable will also run in the time trial having nursed injuries in October, while Lachie Fogarty, who did not attend the combine through illness, ran his time trial on Tuesday.

Mature-ager Tim Kelly, who shone at WAFL level this year, will also complete a 2km time trial in Perth.

Darcy Fogarty has been out of action since mid-season knee surgery, but is in the mix to be a top-10 selection, with North Melbourne, Collingwood and Carlton all linked to the strong-bodied forward.

The draft hopefuls in Melbourne will then also undergo extra medical testing with club doctors, alongside other prospects including Luke Davies-Uniacke, Adam Cerra, Jarrod Brander, Charlie Spargo and Hunter Clark.

Paddy Dow, who had shoulder surgery late in the season, is another who has been given an extra medical screening this week.

Rayner has been seen as one of the favourites to be the No.1 pick for most of the season, but midfielder Andrew Brayshaw is also in contention after a brilliant end to the season that included a standout running performance at the draft combine.

Brander is considered one of the leading key position prospects available but could get through to the latter parts of the first round on draft night.

That's handy. Will be looking at the result with interest.

Does Rayner tank it?

Going to be interesting, isn't it? All eyes will be on him what ever the result is. <7 min is a good result and you would think he goes #1.

The Brayshaw at one talk really began to take off on Friday/Saturday on the Brisbane board.
It goes further back than that though. Month or so back when Fagan or Noble were interviewed about the top prospects Brayshaw was one of the 4 that they mentioned. Sounded like they really respected him then. I think there was a lot of hope that we could trade another pick into the top 10 to try and get him

I would hope we havent put a line through his name and we take Fogarty at 6. I still think he is the best overall player in the draft, and would be a steal at pick 6.

Does Rayner tank it?
If he did tank I would take it as a sign that he will struggle to get the most out of himself.

Everytime i hear about how good all these new draftee's are going to be and what 'Guns' they are and how supporters take it as a given that they are 10 year players that will be Elite just because they are 1st rounder.

I go back 5-6 years and have a look at who was drafted and realise that only 2-3 actuall become the players we all thought they would become
the following list has only 4 gun players with 4 good players but only 1 potential champion (Daniher) but not many would get the value they cost in a draft

1 L.Whitfield
2 J.O'Rourke
3. L. Plowman
4. J. Toumpas
5. J. Stringer
6. J.McCrae
7. O.Wines
8. S.Mayes
9. N.Vlastuin
10. J.Daniher
11. T.Menzel
12. K.Jacksh
13. J.Lonergan
14. A.Corr
15. T.Garner
16. J.Thurlow
17. J.Simpson
18. B.Grundy
19. B. Kennedy

Draft picks can be very very over rated unless your recruiting team is extremely good - Suprisingly SOS had 6 picks inside 25 missed all the Guns
Whitfield, Plowman,O'Rourke,Corr,Jacksh,Stewart
That was a very poor season but Stringer has been an AA and if you add O'meara and B Crouch to that list then you realise why you would want a top pick.

I have no problem drafting Brayshaw at pick 1.
He has the tank Rayner doesn't have He has the speed LDU doesn't have and He has the kicking skills Dow doesn't so can see why he's raised in the rankings

I like Brayshaw a lot but LDU doesn't have any issues with speed. He was actually recorded as faster over 20m than Brayshaw at the start of the year (LDU - 2.980s vs Brayshaw - 3.00s) and I think the way he accelerates from congestion shows that he can definitely use that in game.

Manager is always going to say that.
seriously...would he JUST SAY THAT...we are talking about a kids life here mate....robbies best interest is the player...hes not into lets just try him and see if he drops of the perch...are u f....... serious....jaiydn stephenson is fine where it comes to this issue....trust me

Such a weird draft in retrospect

GWS went mega vanilla, pretty much all of them have had pretty significant injuries and we somehow almost snaked Daniher with pick 34
