2017 Draft rumours

It's only seen as "open" because Brisbane have the 1st pick and the "go home" factor has become a big thing supposedly (at least in the media). The consensus of Rayner as the #1 prospect seems just as much, probably more so, than McGrath was last year.

McGrath, McCluggage, Taranto, Ainsworth, Petrevski-Seton were all in the mix for top 3 last year. Rayner, UDL, Dow, Cerra, Brayshaw are in the mix for top 3 this year.

Is this a similar phenomenon to "this year's draft is weak, next year's draft will be a super draft"?
FYI - in the anonymous recruiter sample released on AFL.com.au around the draft last year, about 3/4s of recruiters had McCluggage as number one.

So no, there was absolutely not a consensus of McGrath at 1.

Sucks to be us. The one year (hopefully) that we get pick 1, and having pick 3 may be just as good as having pick 1.

I think it's really good clubs have enforced this.

Always the inevitable "injuries" to the same types at combine time.

Nowhere to hide now, if anything the spotlight is even further enhanced given it's so close to the draft and their results wont blend into the other mass amount of players on show.

I still think you'll go Rayner. Clubs should be able to pick the best draft prospect at pick #1 and feel confident in their decision. Recruiting Hodge should negate any go home factor imo - at least in the short term. He suits your needs doesn't he? And you have created a quality list and now have a quality coach. I could also see you guys outperforming Carlton this year so I don't see why they'd be that much more attractive as a destination.

seriously...would he JUST SAY THAT...we are talking about a kids life here mate....robbies best interest is the player...hes not into lets just try him and see if he drops of the perch...are u f....... serious....jaiydn stephenson is fine where it comes to this issue....trust me

Thanks doc.

“It’s serious,” one chief recruiter said.

“We haven’t made a final call, but it’s a big worry. But every club will view it differently, and that’s important. It’s certainly very well-known.”

Everytime i hear about how good all these new draftee's are going to be and what 'Guns' they are and how supporters take it as a given that they are 10 year players that will be Elite just because they are 1st rounder.

I go back 5-6 years and have a look at who was drafted and realise that only 2-3 actuall become the players we all thought they would become
the following list has only 4 gun players with 4 good players but only 1 potential champion (Daniher) but not many would get the value they cost in a draft

1 L.Whitfield
2 J.O'Rourke
3. L. Plowman
4. J. Toumpas
5. J. Stringer
6. J.McCrae
7. O.Wines
8. S.Mayes
9. N.Vlastuin
10. J.Daniher
11. T.Menzel
12. K.Jacksh
13. J.Lonergan
14. A.Corr
15. T.Garner
16. J.Thurlow
17. J.Simpson
18. B.Grundy
19. B. Kennedy

Draft picks can be very very over rated unless your recruiting team is extremely good - Suprisingly SOS had 6 picks inside 25 missed all the Guns
Whitfield, Plowman,O'Rourke,Corr,Jacksh,Stewart

i know youve done it to not get shot down, but vlastuin is a gun now

I have no problem drafting Brayshaw at pick 1.
He has the tank Rayner doesn't have He has the speed LDU doesn't have and He has the kicking skills Dow doesn't so can see why he's raised in the rankings

To be honest, if you guys take Rayner and Freo take LDU, I'm hoping we take Brayshaw. Reckon he could very well end up being the best player in the draft.

I know he's a talented player and why you'd want him, but doing something like that would be a poor reflection on his character - in fact the polar opposite of a guy like Brayshaw
100%.
I'm already a bit concerned that a lack of fitness could indicate he's not willing to put in enough work. Needs to nail this run

i understand the concern.....but its not serious......i have spoken to him and his dad....its not serious...:)

Nope. But if he's as much of a flight risk as some think I think he'll make it to 3. I don't think the tweets have anything to do with it tbh.

Agree, if a player is contrary to transferring from his preferred state it will be abundantly clear attitude and body language.
The interviews are set up to fine tune and source player type and suitability for a team structure and game plan.
So yes we should be able to snaffle Rayner and it will be an amazing outcome.

Do you think Brisbane and Freo would be put off by him liking tweets from Carlton?

Apparently on the radio in Perth today, it was reported that one high ranked potential draftee has said he will refuse to go to Freo if drafted. Does anyone know who it is or have any info on this?
If that’s the case the AFL should step in and suspend the player from the draft because as ai understand it, if you nominate for the draft then you are saying you are prepared to go anywhere.

Dead right. You can't agree to terms and conditions and then set out to make your own ones up, on the run.

You don't like the way the draft is conducted, don't enter into it.

Sounds like absolute bullshit if you ask me.

Grundy is also has Potential to be the best Ruckman in the AFL

Agree 100%. These players dictate what happens right from the word go. The only way to get around it is clubs being able to trade players without their consent like the NBA.

Could be an exaggeration. Recall reading something about Brander not wanting to be drafted to WA. Saying you prefer to stay in a certain state is one thing but flat out refusing to go is taking it to extremes. Very unlikely

Whitfield is absolutely a gun and in the same bracket as Wines & McCrae.
