Also LDU, Dow and Brayshaw have been talked about at #1 in recent days. Many have talked about how amazing it is there is no stand out number 1.

Love the fact you bake me for my concerns about Rayner and follow it up by attributing comments to me that I never made as if he is the one I really want after all. Having an each way bet.

Those other players are talked about because, once again there is literally nothing else to talk about and 'Brisbane need to consider the homesickness factor'. I'm definitely not disagreeing that they do need to consider the 'go home factor'

To be honest, it would suck if he intentionally tanked because it would be a continuation of the escalation of 'homesickness' is absolutely creating imbalance an already fairly unbalanced 'national' competition. But the imbalance is an unsolvable overarching issue of the AFL's fairly unique situation being a traditional competition in a relatively small capitalist society spread over an enormous country.

I've seen about two comments max from Carlton supporters.

Have a look at the Carlton board if you want to get a real gauge on who Carlton supporters want at 3. At this stage, most are leaning towards Paddy Dow, then LDU, and then Rayner.

Our biggest area of need is midfielders - and by some distance - which is why Rayner isn't as highly regarded (at least in the context of what we need) as others. It's mostly opposition supporters who are linking Rayner with Carlton due to us being a Victorian club with the highest draft selection and Rayner being commonly viewed as the most talented player in the draft.

I personally don't think his ceiling is that much higher than Dow's, LDU's or Cerra's, who all have elite traits to be developed.

The league should issue a very firm warning - I would suggest publicly announce that should a similar situation arise in the future that the player in question would be ruled out of the draft that year and the club in question would forfeit the pick under question.

Pretty big penalty but kids ‘nominating’ their ‘club of choice’ before the draft is ridiculous - next it’ll be refusing to sign their rookie contracts and demanding a trade before they step on the field.

I agree on the penalty on a player but a bit harsh blaming a club for a youngster shooting his mouth off.

If they brought that in then I'll be nominating for next year's draft and talking up West Coast using their first pick on me (how ever late it will be).

My only issue with Rayner has been the lack of endurance that some rated phantom drafts have talked about. I know the tank can be improved but I don't know much about his dedication to improve it.

Carlton have obviously been burnt by the likes of Troy Menzel and Kristian Jaksch as far as working to overcome this issue so it's a concern for some of us.

However I recognise he has the best upside and x factor of the top picks. I would take him over all but LDU for the excitement level alone.

I guess the idea of a pure mid and the chance of Fogarty at #10 appeals. Failing that Rayner and Clark/Constable. Rayner and Fogarty is The ultimate risk vs reward scenario and does not guarantee our midfield issues get addressed long term.

In a funny way, I hope we don't have to make a choice to pass up Rayner for anyone else. I'm worried we could go the wrong way and the choice being out of our hands would be easier to deal with.

It really does stink that if Raynar is showing signs he would be a flight risk that means the Brisbane Lions, a team who really needs pick 1 are essentially unable to go after the best player in the draft. Does not seem entirely fair.

If Carlton had pick one they'd pick Rayner under the guise that in 3-4 years have the best midfielder from the draft pool, conveniently when they are playing finals again. SOS isn't as short sighted as a bigfooty club draft thread with it's perpetuated group think. There wouldn't be a single recruiter in the competition that wouldn't take Rayner at 1 on talent, potential and likelihood to reach said potential alone, unfortunately other aspects do exist and so there is a real, but small, chance Brisbane pass on him.

You would take a Rayner because he's exciting but you'd prefer LDU? It's pretty short sighted to view him as only an exciting player, the kid averaged a couple possessions less than LDU at champs level even with his 'poor tank'. He genuinely has the scope to be a top player in the AFL and the biggest thing holding him back is just about the easiest aspect of football to improve. The reason people think his tank is a genuine issue is because it's one of only thing that has been talked about for past 2 months. It really is a non issue as many of the people who have actually dealt with him have said on numerous occasions.

When people talk about the draft for 2+ months they get in feedback loops and vastly complex human beings are generalised to nth degree and they become 'x-factor with no tank' 'explosive but needs years to add mass' 'immediate impact but lower ceiling' 'best kick but injury prone' 'x-factor but can't kick'. Everyone loses all perspective.
