2017 Draft rumours

You would take a Rayner because he's exciting but you'd prefer LDU? It's pretty short sighted to view him as only an exciting player, the kid averaged a couple possessions less than LDU at champs level even with his 'poor tank'. He genuinely has the scope to be a top player in the AFL and the biggest thing holding him back is just about the easiest aspect of football to improve. The reason people think his tank is a genuine issue is because it's one of only thing that has been talked about for past 2 months. It really is a non issue as many of the people who have actually dealt with him have said on numerous occasions.

When people talk about the draft for 2+ months they get in feedback loops and vastly complex human beings are generalised to nth degree and they become 'x-factor with no tank' 'explosive but needs years to add mass' 'immediate impact but lower ceiling' 'best kick but injury prone' 'x-factor but can't kick'. Everyone loses all perspective.

I didn't say I viewed him as only being exciting. I'm clearly preferring LDU because he is a pure midfielder. I would be fine with Rayner being a part time midfielder initially because of the x factor up forward we also need.

Preferring someone else is not an insult to Rayner. It's not like I've said anything nobody else has said.

Terrible really. Both tanking?

Some combination of:
- they are naturally poor at running - bad for anyone who picks them up
- they haven't been training much - bad as it shows a lack of professionalism, but also that they have scope for improvement assuming they work hard
- they didn't try that hard because they know that going slower increases their chance of not leaving their state - which shows poor character

Be interesting if they have other 2km times recorded from the last year or two.

easy fodder

Mate saints are a decade into a rebuild and still finishing 11th even after all these top picks.

Roos are one year in and wouldn't surprise me If we are better than you next year.

Oh and btw we still got our first rounder and change during that Anderson trade period.

Effectively Anderson for Bastianc.

Not great but no big loss

Cheers
A decade? Your math is about good as your list. But nah you’re right, I’d much rather be in Norths position going forward.
Enjoy your team whilst it’s still in Melbourne mate x

Very poor by both Rayner and Fog.
L. Obrien ran 6.12
Apples and Oranges, everyone's being a bit reactionary at the moment. People need to consider the circumstances, ie they've both come off of running preventative injuries and had poorer tanks to start with. As well as the long term, 3-4 years in an AFL system and their potential will no longer be limited by their fitness. I don't think those times are going to change anything

I would have thought a well-rounded midfielder like Brayshaw or Cerra in addition to a bit of x-factor like Bonar (or Stephenson if he slides) would pretty much be the dream for the saints?

Silk off half-back was a bit of a deficiency I noticed this year too so Coffield would definitely appeal although I really hope you let him through to us
Yeah I reckon that first paragraph would indeed be the dream result. It's certainly mine.

Also agree that we could do a lot worse than to grab Coffield, although with the questionmark over whether he does end up good enough in the midfield, he is an awful lot like Roberton down back, and we have some other good young options coming through down back as well (in particular Brandon White, who did so well there in his small taste at the end of the season. He is another quick type around the 190cm mark and is expected to play a lot more next year I believe).

So Coffield's attributes would be extremely welcome, but ideally in a midfield/wing package rather than down back.

two? haven't been looking very attentively then.
Rayner isn't highly regarded by a fan base on a forum? someone better call SOS to let him know how upset you'll all be if you pick him!

If Carlton had pick one they'd pick Rayner under the guise that in 3-4 years have the best midfielder from the draft pool, conveniently when they are playing finals again. SOS isn't as short sighted as a bigfooty club draft thread with it's perpetuated group think. There wouldn't be a single recruiter in the competition that wouldn't take Rayner at 1 on talent, potential and likelihood to reach said potential alone, unfortunately other aspects do exist and so there is a real, but small, chance Brisbane pass on him.

Belittling the way I express my views on an internet forum? I hope you get satisfaction through other aspect of life as well.

I'd say that following his poor 2k time * cough tank * Lions will steer clear and draft Brayshaw or LDU both with links to Brisbane. What are the chances Freo draft Rayner at 2?

Think Fogarty deserves a little slack given he’s coming off knee surgery doesn’t he?

If he falls to Carlton at 3, it means he deliberately tanked (because CARLTANK LOL!!!)

If Brisbane or Freo pick him up anyway at 1 or 2 = nothing to see here, complete non-issue. Lad just needs some time on the treadmill.

Far easier to have a bet each way, so emotionally if he slips they're prepared for it.
