I was thinking this. Also defensive running is a big weakness.

Could be that beams & Rockliff aren't 100% and it's effecting their ability to get on the inside and win the clearances, but shows we need more depth in that area.

So question for the draft watchers, of the top 10-12 who are the ones best at clearances & best at running defensively?
Dow. I hope we win a few more games and get pick 3 just for Paddy.

Our first pick should be the best clearance player available. We get ****** on centre clearances and I don't like it.
There should be inside mids available at each of our first 3 picks, regardless of where Ballenden gets bid on.

Just a random(ish) list of mids available in this years draft. Not my notes, paraphrasing from AFL Draft Central.

In the top 10
Luke Davies-Uniacke 187cm 85kg - inside, big bodied clearance mid, that tackles hard. Elite ball user.
Adam Cerra 186cm 85kg - inside, big bodied contested and clearance mid. Elite ball user.
Paddy Dow 184cm 76kg - inside mid who likes to attack the contest at speed, or break from the contest at speed. Can go forward and kick goals.
Nicholas Coffield 190cm 83kg - Rebounding Defender and Composed mid. Clean and elite ball user. Can make the game slow down. Can burst at speed.
Charlie Constable 190cm 83kg - Rebounding Defender and Composed mid. Smart player with a footy brain. Not as quick as those mentioned already.

Mid First Round talent
Joel Garner 183cm 81kg - HB and inside/outside mid. Vic Metro captain. Fast and good leap with a bit of x-factor. Considered a good user of the ball.
Andrew Brayshaw 183cm 80kg - Inside mid. Wins possession and feeds it out. Handball first, kick second player. Just gets the job done.
Jack Higgins 178cm 76kg - Small Forward and Inside mid. Racks up disposals, but the knock is that his disposals don't hurt teams. Can kicks goals.
Hunter Clark 186cm 79kg - Rebounding Defender and Inside mid. Needs to work on his kick, very clean hands. Working on his contested game.
Lochie O’Brien 184cm 75kg - Outside mid. Elite speed and endurance. Working on his contested game. Good left foot kick.

Late First to Second Round talent

Lachlan Fogarty 179cm 75kg - Inside mid. Clean and polished midfielder. A good decision maker by hand or foot, who tackles hard to win the ball back.
James Worpel 185cm 84kg - Inside mid. Clearance and tackling machine. Needs to work on his kicking, but not a bad kick. Will often just bomb it out.
Jack Petruccelle 184cm 73kg - Inside/outside mid. Elite speed and athleticism. Viewed somewhat as a project as not a clean ball user. Basketball background.
Matthew Ling 184cm 74kg - Outside mid. Good speed, agility and left foot.
Patrick Naish 180cm 69kg - Outside mid/wing. Tied to the Tigers as a father son pick.
Zac Bailey 180cm 68kg - Inside mid. Wins the contested ball and tackles well. Has a great burst of speed from stoppages.

Starting to lock into a few players with our picks now. 1st pick - Dow then LDU, 2nd pick (port) O'Brien then Hunter, 3rd pick Brayshaw, Bailey then Ling. I'm hoping Ballenden is bid outside of that and even if Rocky leaves then that could be used for Cameron and/or others. If it was after our first then a Dow/Coffield would be good with the other hopeful outcomes.

On today, the need is more clear than ever, for a Pendlebury, Bontempelli type, and Constable is now my first on that basis.

I do not believe there is an Clayton Oliver or Ollie Wines type in this draft. So expecting a kid to come in and "fix" our contested or first use possession issues is not a reasonable expectation.

Davies-Uniacke, Cerra and Worpel could come in and impact straight away, similar to Jarrod Berry. I would back Worpel to crack in the fastest and hardest from the get go, and wouldn't be surprised if he has a similar first year to that of Sam Powell-Pepper.

But medium to long term, Paddy Dow possibly turns out to be the best with his combination of contested possession, speed and ability to go forward and kick goals. However, he's definitely a player (same with McCluggage) who I see taking 3 seasons to grow in to his game at AFL level.

Starting to lock into a few players with our picks now. 1st pick - Dow then LDU, 2nd pick (port) O'Brien then Hunter, 3rd pick Brayshaw, Bailey then Ling. If it was after our first then a Dow/Coffield would be good with the other hopeful outcomes.

I really want to wait until after the trade period to see what picks we are taking to the draft, and the draft order, because that will influence which team/s might bid on Ballenden and where, before I start to "lock in" on players.

But if we look at our picks today, I'm hopeful Ballenden would not get bid on before the Port Adelaide pick. With our first pick I draft Paddy Dow (or LDU if we finish above Carlton and they draft Dow) and with Ports pick I draft James Worpel (if we've draft LDU, I hope either O'Brien or Clark is available, though I'd still give serious consideration to James Worpel).

I see Paddy Dow starting on the outside and up forward, before moving inside once he's built his body up after a couple of preseasons. Worpel is an upgrade on Mathieson in every facet would start on the bench with Berry, McCluggage/Dow (one of the two starts in the forward line) and Cox in our best 22 for mine.

I would love to try and trade our picks 14 and 18 for a pick in the top 10. Either the Hawks pick owned by St Kilda or Collingwood's pick. Then I would hope to draft Paddy Dow and Nick Coffield, match a bid on Ballenden with a combination of later picks, and then look to draft any possible sliders on our big board with our back end picks, or go to the rookie draft with extra picks.

I'm not looking at drafting a high number of kids in this years draft.

There's always next seasons draft to address several of these issues.

Think we will and hopefully another with Ports pick. When Stef is finished and our midfield has been built through a couple of drafts I hope we get a ruckman (trade) who knows the art of tapwork to assist OUR mids and not everyone else's (rant over).
when? is!

Isn't Rankine considered a potential no.1 pick?
Yes, but there are 4 or 5 potential number 1's, and with three of them being very talented KPF's, I can see teams such as Collingwood and Carlton going tall over small. And with live pick trading likely to be included in next years draft, Brisbane should be able target Rankine if they really want him.

From each of those groups of players I would be hoping for-

Paddy Dow very closely followed by Nick Coffield.
Lochie O'Brien by a bees .... over Hunter Clark who has got rave reviews for his last 2 games,
James Worpel, don't know a heap about the rest but like the sound of the few things I have read re Jack Petruccelle, then Matthew Ling/Zac Bailey.

Hopefully Parick Naish gets bid on relatively early so the Tigers have to match, can see them bidding on Ballenden with their first pick.

If there are 4 or 5 potential number 1s, why is next year's draft all about one player?

And being so authoritative about something that is 18 months away has the potential to make you look foolish IMO.

We should trade our first pick this year for the first pick next year....

I would not be in favour of that, we will have a pick in the 1-3 range, which team would we trade it to?

We could easily trade it to a team that moves up the ladder in 2018 more than expected. IMO you do not trade out a top 3 pick in the hope of another team having a bad year.

Yeah valid point. How do we get Rankine though?

Briztoon merely has a favourite player and his narrative about Rankine elevates him above the rest. Yes it is a long way out and I'm certain that Briztoon isn't saying that we will draft Rankine merely that he would like us to draft him.

Briztoon has always been rather *cough* "firm" *cough* for ... ah .... I mean about .... Rankine ;)

Not what was said though, yeah?

Anyway, November seems far away to me, let alone November next year.

Because at this stage, the three other kids mostly spoken about in the number one conversation are KPP's and do not fit a need.

And just watch some of Rankine's games and videos on YouTube. The kid is pure magic. When he has the ball, he makes you stand up in expectation and excitement.

1. We might not finish last and even with live trading, getting the best player, particularly if there's a standout, is going to be difficult if you don't have the first pick.

2. It isn't all that common that the best player at this stage is the best player at draft time.

So much water to flow under the bridge to be shutting down conversations by saying that a draft is "all about" a particular player.

Bishop Chris25

Guys can you comment on Izak Rankine please.

What type of player is he. How does he rate talent wise. Who does he play like. Where does he project to play in the short and long term.

Where would you rate/draft him if he was in this years draft. Where does he rate in regards to next years talent.

Cheers.

Based on some of our and other teams recent form I think it's a pretty safe bet that we wont finish last next season (subject to FA of course). I can see us finishing above Carlton, North and Collingwood.
