That's a fair synopsis. Perhaps late bolter would be more apt. He certainly was not in top 10 contention (let alone top 3) until very late in the piece, much as with Oliver. I tend to see mainly Dragons, Stingrays and Bushies the most and frankly he was also not that impressive early on last season. But just shows how players at the age develop so differently and how hard it is to predict who will succeed at senior level and who won't.
I found it amazing watching Taranto and Florent climb the draft boards, and listening to Cal Twomey's podcasts. Twomey often spoke of them and talking about their possible draft range, and sure enough within two weeks, everyone had them rated around where Twomey was saying. And then after the TAC finished to see the two of them keep climbing. Scouts must have been pouring over match footage.

The real bolter happened midseason, was Andy McGrath. I honestly do not remember reading his name in any top 30 conversations. And then we had Vic metro versus Vic Country, with Ben Ainsworth coming back from suspension and booting 3 in a quarter and driving Vic Country towards the win, until McGrath was moved on the Ainsworth late in the 3rd quarter and shut Ainsworth down the rest of the game, while rebounding the ball out time after time.

That's when the talk about McGrath started and he was in top 3 -5 discussions within 3 weeks.

One reason being he was playing school footy until then. This game v Caulfield was one of the first times i saw him play last year. It was early in the year and coincidentally he played on Will Setterfield for most of it and they pretty much negated each other. Jack Higgins and Lachie Harris, among others, played that day.

McGrath was talked about long before...he dragged the Victorian side to a huge win against S.A.His school and Sandy certainly knew!

Na the talk about McGrath started when he gathered 44 possessions in the TAC Cup early in the season.

Wrong thread I know...but anybody else see Brandon Parfitt tear it up for Geelong yesterday? Sure hope Cox and Witherden prove to be the better choices long term :(

A real game changer. Exactly what our side needs.

Always end up looking dumb getting attached to people prior to the Champs but I want Rayner and Worpel with our first two picks.

Yeah I just want big bodied, ultra competitive, contested beasts. I'm sick of having smaller players who can't win the footy, break a tackle or stick a tackle. If you are going to recruit the smaller framed players they have to have that class/evasive ability like Clugga has.

Guys like Darcy Fogarty, Cameron Rayner, Luke Davies-Uniacke and James Worpel should be on our radar at this early stage.
