Can't see us trading out of the top 4. The whole reason last season's trade worked was because we only went back 1 pick. In saying that, if we manage to get pick 5,6,7 for 1 (for 6,7 from St Kilda) and package 14 & 18 then it might be too hard to resist

Yeah FWIW I'd be very surprised if we traded pick 1. I know the club has come out and said we'd be open to trading it but the majority of wooden spooners say that each season. I don't think the club will want to trade away the marketing tool that pick 1 brings. Advertising the arrival of the best youngster in the country sells hope to the members/fans.
I rekon 3 and 17 have sold some hope this year.

It's going to be fascinating watching the mental breakdown of briztoon in slow motion over the next year. This level of fixation on a player this far out is statistically almost certain to end in tears.

We should get Dr Haso to document the subject.

Rayner is still a great fit for us going forward. Let's just hope his yo-yo test results are an improvement on what ever aerobic capacity test he completed at the start of the year. He is a point of difference that's for sure.

This is not going to be popular, but I can genuinely see us moving Schache if it nets us a top 6 pick.

Then I can see us going for Rayner.

I have no idea what the clubs plans are or who we're genuinely interested in. I'm really waiting to see what happens during the trade period before I start speculating about what players could be in consideration for which ever picks we take to the draft.

And I'm still keen on James Worpel. That hasn't changed.

Not sure we will, Close and Freeman probably won't be with us next season. Which means we would have all our eggs in the Hammer basket (noting Ballenden might be more of a ruck/forward.

Schache is still a KPF pick 2 which means he should be really good. Would be interesting to see how many KPF's rated in the top 5 didn't work out and how many did

I'm conflicted on Schache. He's a talented but has some massive queries over his game. I reckon the Pies will be all over him... just a gut feel.

How does Worpel compare to Matt Crouch in his draft year. I remember the knock on him was his disposal.
I know we all hate this game but gee it burns taking darcy g instead of matty crouch pick 22, we did really need a key tall at the time and Adelaide would have surely taken darcy g if we took matty c, but what could have been

He reminds me a little of Tom Mitchell - the ball just seems to always find him. If we did pick him up, who knows if he would've stayed after his 2 years. We were a train wreck and he may have wanted to move back to Adelaide to play with his brother.

Am I the only one who thinks Rayner is a bit overhyped?
Admittedly I have only watched his YouTube highlights. I might be missing something you get from watching full games or live ie. his explosiveness, game winning ability.
But... seems to turn it over a bit in general play, just sneaking simple set shot in, getting a lot of easy goals lace out in team floggings... seems like a cream player. No, that's not a dairy pun!
Anyway, in my opinion, doesn't really seem to fit our current need.

I think we stay well away from Rayner, I remember a Fagan interview last year and he stated he would like all players coming to the club to have 3 things. To be a good kick, have good endurance and good character. Rayner ticks one of those boxes. It's just as likely that he'll turn out to be a Jake Stringer than a Petracca, I don't think he'll ever be a full time midfielder (ala Martin), kids in primary school can run the same beep test.

How much time have you spent with Rayner to judge his character? Was in the Vic Metro leadership group and in interviews seems like a mature, level headed kid so he can't be too bad? We'll wait and see how he tests in the combine endurance wise. As for those saying "He's just as likely to turn into another Jake Stringer"(You aren't the only one to have said this TheZork so I'm not directing this at you personally) is that really such a bad thing? Stringer is such a dangerous forward when in form. He kicked 56 goals in 2015 and last year despite having off field issues and struggling with niggling hamstring injuries he still managed to boot 42 in what was considered a poor season which goes to show how highly regarded he is when in full flight. I think with Stringer it is no coincidence that his drop in form has directly coincided with his family life falling apart, splitting with his partner and spending less time with his kids. He is clearly lacking focus and you can easily tell that his mind is elsewhere out on the oval.

If Rayner turned out to be anything close to an in form Jake Stringer I think we'd all be pretty happy. I don't really see them as similar players though. Although Stringer can be explosive with a burst of pace his broken leg has impacted his ability to show that on a consistent basis. I see Rayner as far more athletically gifted in terms of speed, burst of pace, agility and vertical leap. I think as a forward Rayner projects more as a Dustin Martin when Dusty plays forward. Just super strong in the contest, virtually impossible to beat 1 on 1 with the added ability to be a big threat at ground level.

Rayner will be an awesome player and we couldn't go wrong with a Stringer or Martin esque forward. Only issue for me is for a team screaming out to strengthen the midfield if he only presents to be a 80/20 forward/mid then I'm not sure he's a good fit for us. We really need to bolster that midfield. I guess considering our bookends are locked in it does give us some leeway as we will be able to continue to focus on the midfield over the next 3-5 years but with a top pick I'd really like a genuine mid. Eagerly awaiting Rayner's yo-yo results at the Combine.

Going forward how many inside Mids do we need for good list balance ?

Considering these type are generally available throughout most drafts, with some very handy players being found mid draft, I don't see it as an urgent need at this stage into our rebuild.

If we were to go Rayner with our first, we'd still potentially be able to address that area with Worpel, Clark or Brayshaw potentially being available at the Port pick.
