I didn't think there was a particularly high level of skill on display to be honest. 2017 Draftable players - Miers, Amartey, Andrew Brayshaw, Constable, Kai Owens, Will Walker, Worpel, Parrish, Ling

Watching Himmelberg's impressive game on Saturday, I was reminded of the increasing need for mobility and agility both in the forward line and matching up defensively. So it will be very interesting to see how Jack Payne goes on Saturday in the All Stars game and how he tests at the draft combine. Still only 17 and at 195cm/93kg, Payne is a big unit. The question is whether he has the speed and agility to make it as a modern defender. He has played well in the twos which is a good sign given his late birthday, but I'm not sure how good he is below his knees and how quick.

I'm also wondering if we need to draft both Ballenden and Payne. Probably depends a little on what happens with Frost's concussion issues and our currently uncontracted talls, Close, Eagles & Hammelmann. I just see the game going more the way of Richmond's small forward line, so wonder how many talls we need on the list, though clearly they take longer to develop. Given pick 73 can match a bid in the 50s for Payne, he is still probably good value as a late pick or rookie pick, if we're satisfied about his pace and agility.

Having watched him at the Gabba a few weeks ago, if he is actually 93kg then I'm 73 kg. And I ain't.

He is one big unit.

Every sport has specific bio mechanics for it's various skills.

I rewound to watch why he missed what I thought would have been an easy shot. (Without any pressure. Obviously kid was under a heap of pressure with the title on the line)

That is what I noticed, he planted his lead foot and his body clearly squared significantly to the right. It was a clean kick and went exactly where his body was squared up to.

No worries, well spotted.

I think if we rate Payne and nobody bids him up we will draft him. I doubt Frost is even a consideration. I don't think small forward lines are the future, just the present for some teams. If Richmond get flogged it will probably be in part because they lacked another key forward.

Yeah Richmond's one tall setup is mostly because their only fit options are a ruckman and maybe Todd Elton. Their second tall is Jacob Townsend, who's basically a defensive forward/placeholder who doesn't contribute anything in attack.

Will be interesting to see what happens in the next couple of years... The really big KPF doesn't seem as much as a threat as in the past, unless they're fast and can still win the ball if they don't mark it. (Particuarly with more games being played at night.) Franklin and Kennedy can do this, but I'm not a big fan of players like Hawkins, Jenkins, Tippett, Patton etc. Bulldogs won a flag last year with a mobile forward line and I'd argue that Adelaide's forward strength is dependent on Betts, McGovern, Lynch, Cameron and Walker, the mobile talls and smalls. Ultimately, if the game changes, then it will influence list composition too, eventually.

Agreed with your thoughts on mobile forward lines. But will this start to swing back the other way if the afl start reducing the number of interchanges further?

MIght also be a reaction to increasingly tall backlines with more intercept markers + teams getting more leeway when it comes to blocking and holding. Pretty rare for dangerous talls not to be double teamed a lot these days.

I don't know what the proposed new interchange limit is, but I would have thought that less interchanges would put an even bigger premium on mobile forwards who can run both ways. But happy to reconsider if you can suggest why it will swing the other way?

There is a guy that has kicked 35 goals 27 behinds & had 27 score assists while 'resting' up forward that also goes someway to negating a need for a 2nd tall.

Next thing you know, teams will deliberately kick chaos balls to the 50m arc so the smalls can use their skills.

I don't think Richmonds forward line is a plausible long term solution as when the game wears on, smalls don't get taller BUT full bloody credit to them I say for doing something quite special.

Still think they'll get done on the weekend by a decent margin

The nature of the game is all 'swings and roundabouts' and air of forward pressure by smalls and mobility is the in thing and it is winning games. I think that having three key talls and backs is certainly an overkill and think that sides will look to be more mobile.

Sadly agree. Still won't stop the beers flowing though.

The game is certainly continuing to get more athletic. Big, low mobility guys like Hawkins are finding it tough, but Franklin is still thriving.

Richmond, like the dogs in 2016, are having a moment, but the second they're 2% off white-hot intensity, they're vulnerable - like the dogs were.

Hippy and Charlie Curnow show you don't have to be short to be quick and agile. Richmond's small forwards are running fast enough to stay on top of the water right now, but the second they slow a little...

Unsure of the credibility but a poster on the Blues board has stated that Dow has told people he isn't keen on moving interstate and he has already told the Lions he isn't keen on coming to us.
Maybe we should get Matho and Berry to go round to his place and have a quiet talk to the kid.
