I'm hearing Collingwood are right into Ballenden apparently. Would be a huge ask to match at pick 6...

That does sound like a pretty big reach.

Consequences:

Match bid at pick 6: live picks 1, 19*, 22*
Match bid at pick 15: live picks 1, 12, 19*

* may be moved if an earlier bid on Naish is matched

Hey guys, sorry for the intrusion but I was just wondering if Richmond put a bid on for Ballenden at Pick 17 do you believe that the Lions would still match that?

Yup, we'd match that.

Putting on my conspiracy tin foil hat. Wonder if Adelaide would bid on Ballenden at pick 16 just to get back at us for CC.

Pick 18 would more than pay for any bid after pick 12 so we'd be completely comfortable matching any such bid. So it'd be a pretty harmless vengeance.

------------------

All these assume we go to the draft with picks 1, 12, 18, 19 (i.e. no band two free agents other than Rocky, no Cameron trade, we do no other trades involving early picks, and band 2/3 compo for Rocky).

Not sure if it has been mentioned on here but Collingwood did delist 3 tall defenders yesterday (Keefe, Schade and McClarty?). I imagine they will be looking to add some in this trade/ draft period as they are now very light on in that department. One would imagine they wouldnt be looking to use pick 6 though. Perhaps they may look to move down the draft to secure either or both of Balta and Naughton?

Our picks 12 and 19 for their picks 6 and 36.

I know all that, but feel you missed my point.

My point is many of us would like to be able to use that pick on another player, before having to match a bid for Ballenden.

I'm not entirely sure how realistic that hope is. I think a Richmond bid (with 15 or 17) is highly likely so I would be planning around that anyway. Still, I don't think they're particularly like to bid purely on that basis - clubs run these things quite professionally, and that includes Adelaide, their public statements notwithstanding.

If we are anticipating it as a possibility that he may slip past our top-20 picks look for us to marshal later picks so we can cover the toll without damaging our future second too badly. Covering, say, a Geelong bid at pick 20 with our current late picks would hurt our future second pretty badly.

Where are you hearing/reading that?

Welcome. Be respectful, and opposition fans are always welcome, even if the topic is a little touchy for Lions fans. (Not that this particularly topic is one).

Question back to you, would Richmond match a bid made at pick 12 for Patrick Naish?

Thanks :)

I don't think Richmond would. He would be a massive reach at 12. I see him more going in the 20/25 range

Brander should be the first KPP drafted. Will be a gun, attacking key back.

I am on top of what's needed to match bids at every pint in the draft. I have run through or explained many such scenario's here and on the draft board.

Where Ballenden is rated and potentially bid on is almost a mystery to me. I can put up arguments for drafting him inside the top 20 and for dropping him down to a mid second rounder.

Outside of the top 7 or 8 players in the draft (Rayner, LDU, Dow, Brayshaw, Cerra, Coffield, Stephenson, +/- Hunter Clark) I look at the kids and think teams big boards could vary significantly.

I only difference I see is that Ballenden is a type that Richmond need, where as Naish is a type that Richmond have a lot of

Who do you think has the higher upside/potential A04, Ballenden or Schache?

Why would the Tigers be interested in Ballenden and if reports are correct not interested in Schache?

If reports are true, Schache interviewed with the Tigers yesterday and cried in the interview. I have no more information/rumour than that.

Dodongo would send Frost back to them.

Does this border on draft tampering? I suppose though if true Freo potentially dodge a bullet
Not if they were asked the question. If you make it draft tampering to tell clubs that you'd be reticent to leave Victoria, then we'll never get an honest answer from a draftee again. I'd much rather our club be able to ask a player "do you think you could hack it in QLD?" and get an honest answer, so that we can plan accordingly.

Of course, much, much, much rather the AFLPA stopped screwing the competition and told players that if you register for the draft, you will go where you are drafted, and no quitting after 2 years just because you can get away with it.

lol Twomey on Trade Radio just hinted at Brander might not be keen on the idea of moving West if drafted by Freemantle at pick 5.

Could be good news for us if it pushes Freo towards Hayes or Naughton. I can see both of them being available at #12, so Freo might accept a trade back for #12 and #19, giving us a shot at either Brayshaw or Stephenson at #5. I'd much rather trade with Freo than Collingwood if we're looking for a second gun midfielder.

12 and 18 for 5, 40 and a pinky swear they won’t bid on Ballenden

Collingwood bluffing re. bidding on Ballenden with 6. Would be a huge risk both player wise (worth pick 6?) and he could ask to be traded back to Brisbane in two years

Dodongo thinks that's bullshit. However, should Collingwood manufacture a way to get a pick before 12 (unlikely), then we need to trade pick 12 for a first next year and maybe find the way to do the same with 18 and 19.
