As pulpdriver driver said, it was Twomey doing a mock draft taking team needs in to account. The first four selections were best talent available and Twomey has said since early in the season (at least since the U18 champs) that Rayner is the number 1 player in this years draft pool.

Dockers taking Naughton at 5 is definitely a reach, and the discussion about teams drafting for needs and not best talent followed Twomey selecting Brander for Collingwood. Also while no great emphasis placed on it, where possible Twomey has non Victorian teams selecting home grown talent, the two W.A teams selecting W.A. kids, and Adelaide selecting the top S.A. kid. To add to that, can see Adelaide selecting one of the other top S.A. kids with their pick 17, possibly inside midfielder Zac Bailey.

Not sure how attached to Adelaide Bailey would be.

Callum Twomey just on saying that the Lions will take Cameron Rayner at pick 1. His top 15 Phantom draft ATM.

Lions- Cameron Rayner.
Suns- Luke Davies-Uniacke.
Blues- Paddy Dow.
Kangaroos- Adam Cerra.
Dockers- Aaron Naughton.
Magpies- Jarrod Brander.
Saints- Andrew Brayshaw.
Saints- Jaidyn Stephenson.
Bulldogs- Nick Coffield.
Crows- Darcy Fogarty.
Giants- Jack Higgins.
Lions- Hunter Clark.
Eagles- Oscar Allen.
Swans- Charlie Constable.
Tigers- Sam Hayes.

The potential bolter- Aiden Bonar.
I think the club will continue it's trend from last year and pick up country boys who play Tac Cup together.

For example I can see the club selecting Luke Davies-Uniacke, Hunter Clark and Aiden Bonar who all play Tac Cup together for the Dandenong Stingrays. Similar to what happened last year when we selected McCluagge, Berry and Cox, who played for the North Ballarat Rebels.

As long as it doesn't form internal cliques.

Polec, Longer, Aish, Docherty and now Schache. I'm pretty frustrated. What can be done to fix this? What do the AFL plan to do? It's clearly not a national competition...I mean look at the price Gold Coast had to cough up to get an unproven kid to join them, just cause he "wanted to be there".

Worpel surely comes into calculations for 18 now? Will be nice if Bonar is still available at 15.

Have you read anything about the Schache situation? If so, you'd know his sit is NOTHING like the others mentioned.

2016
Pick 12: Jy Simpkin
Pick 18: Sam Powell-Pepper (Berry was pick 17)

2015:
Pick 12: Charlie Curnow
Pick 18: Jade Gresham

2014:
12: Cory Ellis
18: Isac Heeney

2013:
12: Ben Lennon
18: Luke Dunstan

2012:
12:Kristian Jaksch
18: Brodie Grundy

Really not much difference between the two picks - if anything history says 18 has worked out better in recent times.

Yesterday, I'd have agreed with you. But it looks like there's been some shenanigans in his recontracting for us to give him up for such late picks in a shallow draft, even if we lined up the Richmond deal beforehand.

The club has definitely marketed it better. AFL.com.au have said the deal was agreed upon well beforehand, so it says that the club basically left it to the last minute to try to get all the bad news out in one big hit.

But if you take away all the marketing and spin, really, we had a draftee come here for 2 years, and then we get screwed on his way back to Victoria. In fact, if you look at the cost vs compensation, we got screwed worse with Schache than the others...

The kid clearly has big issues mate - stop being so selfish and whining over us DOING THE RIGHT THING.

Heeney's not a valid comparison as his circumstances will never happen again. Still, pick 17 (would have been 18 under current rules) was Kyle Langford and you're still right, it's probably not a big difference.

Say what you want.. I say it is very much like the other situations in a lot of ways. ALL first round picks that left the club for greatly depreciated values.

You might be content with Brisbane being a bargain-based feeder for other clubs, I'm not though.

I'm not mad a Schache. He wanted to be close to his family, and that is what it is. He was willing to come here, gave it a shot, but he couldn't cope, and so be it. That said, he's hardly the first kid to have homesickness issues, and I don't think it goes as far as mental illness, though I have no info on that. And I also have seen nothing to suggest that Polec or Yeo weren't just as unhappy up here. So no, I don't see anything to separate this situation from the Go Home 5 situation. Maybe it's just disappointment that we thought we were past this sort of thing, and nope, it looks like we're not.

I would say that from the general discussions, Cameron was about as unhappy as Schache. However we let Schache go for cents-on-the-dollar just to do "the right thing". And then we overpaid for Cameron, possibly also to do "the right thing". How is it that whether buying or selling, our club gets screwed?

absolutely spot on, Gold Coast did the same thing and its absolutely ridiculous, I don't think anyone can spend this enough by saying well big picture A + B = C

have a look at the results clubs like Carlton and Freo were able to manufacture compared to us its actually deplorable, I'm not someone who lost my crap when the GH5 happened or when trades like Belll and Aish happened as I backed the club in but this is honestly a new low.

we need to sack some of our recruiting staff for continuing to select Pea Hearted blokes

I dont think you can really include Heeney in that list. If you move him up to bid position you end up with Liam Duggan at 12 and Kyle Langford at 18 so a nil all draw there.

Here's a depressing fact.
Since losing the grand final 13 years ago only 8 players we've drafted in the first round have remained on the list longer than the initial 2 year contract. Only 5 have made it past 3 years: Mitch Clark, Matthew Leuenberger, Daniel Rich, Sam Mayes and Marco Paparone.
