Here's a depressing fact.
Since losing the grand final 13 years ago only 8 players we've drafted in the first round have remained on the list longer than the initial 2 year contract. Only 5 have made it past 3 years: Mitch Clark, Matthew Leuenberger, Daniel Rich, Sam Mayes and Marco Paparone.
Paparone doesn't really count and two of those are still on our list and best 22.

I love a good stat. In the interest of completeness, could you also tell us (a) who the other 3 were who ducked out before 3 years, and more importantly (b) how many we lost before 2 years (i.e. 8 out of how many?).

It would also be interesting to compare this to other clubs, but that's a lot more work.

Polec, Karnezis and Cameron Wood were the 3 who made it to 3 years. Every other first round draftee aside from them and the 5 named were 2 years and then gone.

Does anyone know if they play the draft at the Pineapple Hotel? If not there, then any other bars/pubs around Bris?

I'd highly doubt it tbh, would shock me if anywhere played it at all. You could probably ask at the piney to get it put up in the bar perhaps if it wasn't too busy that night.

First mention made it sound pretty dire, but looking more closely, I count 5 who left before 2 years: Henderson (traded, but willingly), Docherty, Longer, Aish and Schache. Its still not great, of course.

Second-rounders are interesting. As of today, our last 10 second-round picks are all still on our list (could be 9 if we delist Close before the draft), and since our last GF, only one second-rounder has been traded away (Redden, after 7 seasons). There have also been 7 of them delisted (a couple, Green and Chris Schmidt, found their way onto other teams' lists after being delisted). Only Schmidt didn't make it beyond 2 years, and only Mills and Wearden were gone before 3. 12 (Proud, Collier, Redden, Bartlett, Green, Lester, Close, Robertson, Cutler, Taylor, McStay and Gardiner) have made it past 3 years.

Pretty sure all those guys left after their second year.
We have had better success in the second round but our first rounders record has been dire.

Picks 1, 15, 18, 40, 44 and 52. Hopefully we get the first 3 in before the bid comes for Ballenden.

So far we have had Freeman, Clayton, Harwood, Janson, Rockliff and Schache leave (6 players)

We have Hodge and Cameron in. Leaves 4 list spots today. we will want to make pick 44 live to match for ballenden (40+44 covers any bids from 19 down) so we'll need to delist at least 1 other player.

and there is some prospect we try to sign a delisted free agent or use the PSD pick 1 (Mullet/Trengrove/Menzel/Clarke), or upgrade a rookie (Barrett or Hammer). which would require a 2nd player to be delisted.

So still a reasonable chance that both Beams and Close (as the last uncontracted players on the list) are moved on either with or without promises of being redrafted or rookied.

Likely draft scenario. 1/15/18 live. 40 and 44 match a bid for Ballenden (with any spare points becoming pick 60 in the draft or whatever), Pick 52 is a live pick.

Also note that delisting 2 would allow a list spot for the big key defender from the academy (Payne?) with a late pick, although would then mean we didn't have enough list spots to add a delisted free agent or upgrade a rookie etc.

Ellliot Yeo says hello

Wearden was a third round pick

Connole really needs to pull a rabbit out of the hat in this draft. I'm finding it very difficult to get excited about any player after pick 15ish looking at phantom drafts (eg http://www.afl.com.au/news/2017-09-28/cal-twomeys-phantom-form-guide-september-edition). Really not sure who is a realistic get at 15 and 18 that people have been keen on. Bonar/Clarke/Coffield etc will all be long gone. O'Brien should be available at 15 and would appeal to us since he's one of the better kicks in the draft pool.

1, 15, 18: best available
40&44: Ballenden
52: Sambono
Hodge
Cameron
7 in.
Freeman, Clayton, Harwood, Janson, Rockliff and Schache gone. 6 out so far.
Close gone.

Payne to rookie list.

I see some value after 15 who would suit our needs: Lachlan Fogarty, Worpel, Ling, Zac Bailey, Charlie Spargo, Stephan Giro, Gryan Miers. I think one of Constable or O'Brien will still be available at 15 and would be happy with either.

Take Luke Davies-Uniacke at pick 1 then cross everything and hope two of Hunter Clark, Lochie O'Brien, Aiden Bonar or Charlie Constable slide to 15 and 18.

I wonder if we could jump early and take mature ager Tim Kelly at pick 18, would be a big call but I have watched and read a bit about him over the last week or so and I really like the look of him.

Let's move on quickly from the horror that was trade period.

Insert who you hope here:

1.
15.
18.

??. Ballenden

I genuinely do not know who to slot in at any of the picks.

First up, you have to believe we will be taking 6 picks to the draft, holding Picks 1, 15, 18, 40, 44 & 52.

Secondly I'm not sure which team bids on Ballenden. I do not believe a bid will come before pick 18. If a bid does come before pick 18, that will be a genuine kick in the guts.

Pick 1, I'm tossing up between Rayner and LDU, but then I am extremely gun show of losing another top pick in two years time. Do we reach a little for Paddy Dow.

Picks 15 and 18 are in that no mans land of players that either don't suit our needs, or kids who I'm really not enamoured with, mainly Vic Metro or W.A. kids.

1. Luke Davies-Uniacke
15. Lochie O'Brien
18. James Worpel
29. Ballenden*
46. Gryan Miers
52. Jack Payne

*(Melbourne does what Melbourne does and bids on an academy kid at pick 29. Points to match: 456. Bid matched with pick 40 [429 points] & pick 44 [27 points] Pick 44 slides back to pick 46.

I know nothing about him as a player, but I'm reminded of Carlton inexplicably picking Boekhurst at 19.

That would be ideal! I reckon Miers goes a little earlier though. Ballenden too.

Nice work....so tell me.....if someone bids on Payne at say 35 in this weak draft....can we cover that or need to go to futures?
Also if we want 1 pick in the Psd we will have to kill beams or close?
