It's a tough one. As you can see, there are a few fan favourites on the board. Dow and LDU and Stephensen probably the big ones.

That said, last Road to the Draft podcast, Twomey was saying that Rayner is clear best player in the draft, and the conversation around other prospects being "in the mix" was more about media trying to build some suspense, or people trying to talk themselves out of it. In recent years, of course, Twomey has generally been pretty accurate as far as his top-end predictions have gone. I'd imagine that if the club goes best available, we'll take Rayner. If we don't, it'll be that we had genuine concerns around his go-home factor.

Club has come out and said they'll take best available, but they also said they'd hang on to Schache unless they got a fair deal, so you take what they say with a grain of salt.
Yeh fair enough. No doubt rayner is the best in my book. Interestingly i watched rayners interview at the combine and said he is happy to go anywhere so at the moment he doesnt seem like a flight risk however that can change after a few yrs.

I suppose it comes down to the club read, but even then - intention and action are different things. I don't think anyone doubts Schache intended to be a one club player, and from all accounts, he really wanted to be drafted to Brisbane. Only after you get here do you know how a player will actually react.

All ballenden had to say in his interviews with other clubs is i love qld and im very close to my family and the southern clubs will leave him alone. He must know hes a cert to be taken by us so he has no need to worry about impressing the evil south.

Let's hope he didn't say something like "It's always been my dream to play blockbusters at the MCG and immerse myself in the heart of the home of football"!

Our rookie list, at the moment:
So far Blake Grewar, a Cat B, Qld zone selection has been delisted.

Category A (maximum 4, if we have 40 on senior list)
40. Matt Hammelmann - 3rd year, needs to be promoted/delisted
42. Mitchell Hinge - 1st year
43. Jake Barrett - 1st year
46. Oscar McInerney - 1st year

Category B ( usually 3, with exception made for The Recruit, hence 4 last year).
11. Cian Hanley (category B - Ireland) - 3rd year, needs to be promoted/delisted, or granted AFL exemption.
47. Reuben William (category B - QLD zone) - 2nd year
41. Matt Eagles (category B - The Recruit) - 1st year

Issues: Can Eagles be offered a 2nd year as a Cat B rookie? I hope so, but there seems to be no precedent for this, and I guess it is possible he might need to become a cat A rookie. Will AFL continue to allow us an extra cat B rookie?

Hanley. We have applied to AFL for exemption to list him for a 4th year because of serious injuries in first 2 years. Seems to be no answer to this yet as far as I am aware.

Hammelmann - dependent on both Close and C Beams to be delisted, in order to be upgraded, assuming we draft 5 new players. Otherwise I think he can be redrafted as a rookie.

Barrett and McInerney (and presumably Eagles) are likely to be retained.

Hinge and William, hard to say.

Michael Close and Claye Beams, if delisted, could be redrafted as Cat A rookies, though I can't see how Close, C Beams and Hammelmann can all survive on rookie list. Probably 2 out of 3 at most.

Possible vacant spot for a Cat B Qld zone selection, (perhaps depending on Eagles's situation) which could be Payne, if he's not taken in national draft.

Competition for rookie spots seems fiercer than ever.
2nd & 3rd year rookie retention due Tuesday October 31, 2pm.

If anyone can throw further light on above, would love to know re Hanley, Eagles, Hammer etc.

Rayner getting some public relations training from his agent already.

As Noble said, draft for 'talent' trade for 'need'.
If true to word, Cam Rayner is the best talent in the draft crop and still has room to grow his game.
We need to start to back ourselves in and draft the best talent. We need another Akka someone who will feed off the atmosphere at the Gabba and get bums on seats.

I don't think it's as simple as that. You can't deny work ethic and you can ignore deficiencies. Liam Ryan being an example.

We need we'll rounded midfielders like Berry IMO. You can't draft too many Cluggs who struggles to win his own footy or Matho who's a poor kick, has poor endurance and is unaccountable or Keays who's a terrible kick, slow and lacks composure.

Unless there's likely to be a Berry at 15 or 18 I'd like to go a safer choice with our first pick. Especially after the Schache saga there's now a whole extra layer to a draft prospect there must be a focus on especially when it comes to early picks put simply maturity and not just giving the right answers.

So whom do we pick at 1/15/18? I would pick UDL/Bonar if there and Allen.

UDL for me as i think he is the most comolete genuine midfielder. Rayner might have better natural talent, but he isnt a mid in the mold of LDU. LDU also a tallish mid which we need. 15 will be the tricky one, will depend how the draft unfolds, who slides and who we rate. I wouldnt mind taking a punt on Bonar here if no one does before hand.

We have said we pick our players, be it draft or trade by talent and character. We have also said we want to bolster our midfielder and will be targeting mids in the draft. We also see Cameron as a midfielder.

Freemantle is the real wild card, it's so hard to know who they would take at pick 2. And pick 5. Realistically the top rated W.A. kid Aaron Naughton is rated closer to 20 than 10 on most big boards. They're going to have to draft at least one, if not two Victorian kids, and face the inevitable go home issues in a couple of years time.

Yeah, you got me.

I'm changing my vote

Also, this makes for interesting reading

Especially this bit

"I supported the Brisbane Lions growing up but I trained at North Melbourne for two weeks and enjoyed it there so they're probably my preferences, but I'm sure they're all pretty similar anyway," he said.

"I always wanted to play for them [Brisbane] so [going interstate] doesn't really bother me.

Rayner for me. Great defensive game aswell as the flashy stuff. Only need to improve the tank which I think should be possible.

This is what Twomey thinks too.

He rates Rayner a clear #1 and Twomey generally knows his stuff.

For me this carries more weight than looking at Utube highlights.

I'm on the Rayner bandwagon.

Dodongo thinks Stephenson is that man. Dodongo wants you to take note at 1:15. Dodongo thinks that's special. Dodongo then wants you to look at the next 3 highlights at 2:26. Dodongo then notices a few after that, particularly at 3.04 which is AKA like. And around 3:35. Dodongo will also point out he has a defensive game too and some of the other defensive stuff he does there needs to be looked at. Dodongo thinks that there's so much to work with here that he's going to be an utter gun.

If we take Rayner at #1 and he leaves after two years we really continue the narrative. I personally would rather a player without questionmarks as a midfielder at #1 with a reason to stick fat. Either a Lions fan (Stephenson) or someone with relationships already in place (Dow). Of course there is also the temptation to grab a ready to go from day one type in LDU or Cerra although I think we could do that at 15 or 18. Im going stay in the Dow camp for now as I have seen too many phantom drafts/ comments on Stephensen rating him well outside even the top ten.

I am keen on O'Brien, Bonar, Clark with our later picks if they slip that far. O'Brien for his class, Bonar for a bit of X Factor and Clark for his leadership and hardness.

More specifically I think they mentioned foot skills which is why Cerra may be a chance and Stephenson not so much
