I agree. Weak draft and I can see late first round is when clubs start taking a few punts. I will be shocked if Ballenden gets thru the first round without any clubs trying to pick him. 12 onwards is the danger zone. Adelaide could have a shot with 12, seeing they lost Lever.

I think there's not too much to worry about in there. Ballenden is not the ideal choice to replace Lever and Adelaide desperately need mids, and with so many teams around this mark targeting mids Adelaide are not in much of a position to eliminate themselves out of the decent picks - 39 is their next selection. West Coast - again, good for talls, desperate for mids.

Sydney is next. Their talls are certainly aging but they'd really be looking to add more outside pace and rebound I'd say. Few options there should be available at this mark and if not there'll be better talls too eg Brander.

Then us. Then Bulldogs - just bolstered their stocks, obviously. Next Richmond - and conveniently, all we'd need to have done is mention we were looking at Naish at 15 to get the conversation about a handshake deal started. Solid chance Brander is still here for them anyway though. And then us and we're good to match with later picks.

Quigs- who would you take at 1? And who do you think are realistic options at 15 and 18 that you'd like us to take?

I would take LDU at 1. Lowest risk I think and he is a guy who gives a real inside presence and can stand up and drag a team along with him. Good body size and skills are good in space. Needs to work on having more consistent hurt factor but with his skills already being okay I think this will come.

I would like us to take O'Brien at 15 although Clarke would be good if he was there. I see O'Brien as a bit of a Sidebottom type. I would be tempted to bid on Naish to keep Richmond honest and he would be a good get if they passed on him.

I think the Bullies make us pay 18 for Ballenden but if they don't Allen would be good as a third tall marking target who can kick goals and get around the ground. Bonar is a big upside type risk that I would consider at 18 as well.

Not seeing Adelaide as being desperate for mids. Adel have Gibbs coming in to support Sloane. The Crouch brothers should continue to improve given their age and Greenwood was excellent in his first year and should only be better next year. I assume Adel will be hoping that Milera can replace Cameron. That is a pretty solid core. I am thinking Adelaide takes Brander or Fogarty but they are very good at assessing key positions and they certainly lack depth there.

Sydney are right for mids. Brander likely has a landing spot here although again a bid for Ballenden not without a chance given they could easily see him as a defender and they have a need.

Bullies have a significant presence in Brisbane, have been keeping a close eye on our NEAFL forwards and have history with forcing academy teams to pay a decent price for the academy prospects. They are a big danger to bid imo.

LDU is still my overall preference at 1. Just seems the best well rounded mid. I like his ability inside, the way he tackles and also the way he stands up in tackles and gets the ball out. I also really like what he does without the ball. He is always in a good position or on the move to the next phase of play when other players are standing still. He might not be the most fancy of players, but i just think he is a really good anchor and foundation for our future midfield. He is definitely a 'safe' pick though. This is why i wouldn't mind taking Bonar if available later, go the high risk reward with a later pick. I also actually don't mind the idea of O'Brien, especially if other types like Clarke are off the board. Outside mids with hurt factor is still an area we can bump up. We are playing a fast moving style of footy, and whilst there have been knocks on his contested footy, there is certainly a spot in AFL footy for the top line outside types. They just have to have those elite skills and hurt factor, and you need to have blokes who can feed them the ball.

Retained rookies (which I guess we know) and nominated academy players (which will be interesting) was due in at 2pm today. Should be some news about both soon.

As a matter of course, Academy clubs have traditionally nominated every academy kid who has any chance of being drafted. It's not seen as a commitment to draft every kid.

Not always. It's interesting to see who is omitted, e.g. Buzza in 2015.

Hey fellas, popping in again to tell you how I've gone at the end of the first round so far.

Took Paddy Dow with 1 as I feel he has the best all round game
Charlie Constable with 15 which I'm pretty stoked about, great leader, big bodied and ripper kick too
Lochie O'Brien slipped to 18 which I was happy about, Jack Petrucelle was the next option for me.

With 40 and 44, we're not matching bids and I know they'll be used on Ballenden on draft night but I was thinking another outside mid and probably a state league 3rd tall at either.

Was he omitted or we didn't have any main list spots left?

He wasn't even nominated, whereas guys like Rolls and Chol did get them that year.

So who picked Ballenden and when?

Any chance of constable really sliding? Like sliding to the pick 30 region? It’s haplened before so here’s hoping

Unlikely. His GPS scores and prior testing results from what I understand are incredibly poor, so there is some division of opinions with Constable, but there seems to be enough fans being a 190cm mid with good skills and vision.

Take Gryan Miers at 40 or Zac Bailey if either is still available. State league 3rd tall? We won't do that. You might as well take Jack Payne (KPD) from our academy at 44 or 52.

A (semi-realistic) dream draft for me would have us choosing all three of the top Dandenong midfield prospects: LDU at 1, Clark at 15, Bonar at 18. Gives us the right mix of safe picks and risk/reward. You'd figure LDU has a relatively low go home factor since he's country, a surfer and has a house in Brisbane. We had that conversation some time back about how pre-existing relationships could help reduce the go home factor, and perhaps a solid three from the same team can all keep each other interested in staying.

I don't actually think Clark and Bonar will last to our picks though.
