Not happy because you don't like finishing last, or not happy because you don't like the player/s rated as the top prospect/s.

My fear is that Ballenden will be bid on early and require both Ports pick and fair chunk of points from our second round pick, pushing it a fair way down.

It was finishing last. Never like getting the spoon. On that note I'm a bit concerned that the top players haven't really stood out like previous years and put the points in the board but it's a long way to go yet and it'll be at the national champs when they should.

We need mids and we have Ballenden but it'll be interesting to see where he goes, seeing as he's being played in the ruck a bit more maybe we can see how he and Sam Hayes track throughout the year to compare? Just hope that Richmond finish above Port as they've usually bid on our players.

Hayes had a massive day today. Kicked 6 from 6 for the game against Gippsland.

The problem with the Ballenden situation is we may not have any choice but to match in certain scenarios.

If we go into the draft with say picks 1, 12 and 19 followed by a pick in the 30s and Ballenden is bid on at pick 20 we would most likely have to match as what is the possibility that a player we want would still be there with a pick in the 30s? Same if the bid came in the 4-6 range, we may like another player at that pick but he would in all likely hood not be available at pick 12.

We would need multiple players that we rate in front of Ballenden to not match a bid in those scenarios IMO.

I'll take the first scenario every day of the week. Three picks then match a bid on Ballenden, even if we have to carry a second round deficit in to the 2018 draft.

If we do not rate Ballenden in the 6 to 12 range, and he's bid on early, I'm passing. There will be quite a few handy players available at 12. I doubt it that any team will have one particular player in mind after say pick 5 or 6.

Let's face it, last years draft, and how it played out was basically the dream scenario for us. How likely is that to happen.

Early days but some really exciting prospects. There are three big bodied, tall, contested ball winning midfield prospects in Darcy Fogarty, Cameron Rayner and Luke Davies-Uniacke who at this very early stage are rated in the top 5 of this years prospects.

Darcy Fogarty is 193cm, capable of playing as a 3rd tall/smaller KPP at both ends of the ground but has also played through the midfield and could become a tall, modern day midfielder in the mould of Fyfe/Cripps. He's very competitive, already got an AFL ready body, strong, consistently breaks tackles, he's got a good, powerful kick. Definitely one to watch heading into the U18 championships. SA boy.

Cameron Rayner is 190cm, he reminds me of Christian Petracca. Tall, strong, but powerful. He has that burst of pace that allows him to win the contested footy, burst away from the pack and get the ball moving his teams way. He's also very dangerous up forward with strong hands and he's a good kick for goal. Capable of kicking bags of goals. Another one with an AFL ready body and he has a fend off that Dusty Martin would admire. Probably my favourite player in this years draft. Vic Metro boy.

Luke Davies-Uniacke is 187cm, he's a tall, strong midfielder and has drawn comparisons with the Swans Josh Kennedy. He has good disposal and he has a bit of a burst of pace as well. Really clean hands. Again, he could play Round 1 of next year with an AFL ready body. Vic Country boy.

I really like all three of these guys and I think we'd be doing well to add one of these guys to our list. Will have to wait and watch the U18 series unfold but these three are three to watch once the U18 carnival rolls around.

Which of those three have, in addition to talent, the most amount of AFL ready body size, mongrel, toughness and competitive fire?

After yesterday's effort, the Lions really need some young blokes with size and a mean streak, ala the Robbos.

Who at the Bulldogs has a mean streak?

It's not something you need.

I haven't really had a chance to look at this years draft prospects - i always enjoy watching the under 18s championship and i remember Lochie O'Brien really catching the eye last year as an underage player being a gifted midfielder - great disposal. He is the kind of player we will need going forward. We need better users of the footy through the middle.

I actually am in agreement with those who have proposed if we get draft pick 1 which it looks like we will, that perhaps we trade that for two picks inside the top 10. We need to start fast tracking development and building depth. We might miss out on the best player in the draft but we will get two quality players who might just end up better or just a rung below. Throw in Port's first round pick and we could have 3 picks inside the top 15 and 4 picks inside the top 20 - thats about the most exciting aspect of the season as a lions supporter right now!

I think it is fairly evident what 13Beast was alluding to but seeing you've identified the current premiers do you think that they as a team would be pushed around like we are (for a number of years now)? How about the Hawthorn teams and the Swans drew the line yesterday as well. Its been talked about previously that we don't have a team with the attitude of not being pushed around. This was evident when Keays, Matho and Hipwood flew the flag last year against Carlton (and they were first year players) I believe or it could have been Hawthorn.

Darcy Fogarty has come out saying that he hates losing and some of the tackles I've seen him lay is evident of this. Worpol also has similar traits as well.

This is definitely an option and think that the club will have a look at it. It all depends on how they rate the number one player in the draft in comparison to the others. I also like Lochie O'Brien and if he continues to build on his contested ball he would be an option.

I think playing good footy would give the players the confidence to not be pushed around. Keays, Matho and Hipwood probably weren't worn down by season after season of getting smashed. I think the old 'look at the scoreboard' is the best defence to anyone trying to get in your face. Any bravado otherwise is just a bit sad.

At this early stage of the season my top 6 are:
#1 Darcy Fogarty
General Forward/Inside Midfielder (Glenelg/South Australia)
05/09/1999 | 192cm | 88kg

#2 Luke Davies-Uniacke
Inside Midfielder (Dandenong Stingrays/Vic Country)
08/06/1999 | 187cm | 85kg

#3 Cameron Rayner

General Forward/Inside Midfielder (Western Jets/Vic Metro)
21/10/1999 | 187cm | 88kg

#4 Jaidyn Stephenson*

Medium Forward (Eastern Ranges/Vic Metro)
15/01/1999 | 189cm | 76kg

#5 Lochie O’Brien
Outside Midfielder (Bendigo Pioneers/Vic Country)
18/09/1999 | 184cm | 75kg

#6 Sam Hayes
Key Position Forward/Ruckman (Eastern Ranges/Vic Metro)
09/06/1999 | 203cm | 93kg

My belief is this is currently the top tier of this years draft.

I'm not sure how you would trade pick 1 for two top 10 picks, because we'll have to be trading with two different teams. And I am extremely reluctant to be giving up other assets to help achieve this.

I would 100% give up pick 1 & Ports pick & our third round pick (from Collingwood) (or even our second pick if a high third round pick came back in the trade) for Luke Davies-Uniacke and Lochie O'Brien.

*Top 6 on talent & ceiling, but not a player I'm personally keen on.

Latest episode of Road to the Draft is out. Talking to Western Bulldogs recruiter Simon Dalrymple. Very interesting episode. Those interested in JJ may not want to listen.

That I don't know. Most of my information comes from reading match reports and reading draft watchers and listening to Cal Twomey.

One website I really like is AFL Draft Central run by a final year Journalism student.

Looking at the Next Generation players and clubs they are tied to, Hawthorn are big winners.

Tony Olango (2016/17), Marrara, Multicultural
Changkuoth Jiath (2017), Morwell, Multicultural
Tyrone Hayes (2017), Lakes Entrance, Indigenous
Irving Mosquito (2018), Briagolong, Indigenous

I can't link to the article sorry.

Here's one of Cal Twomey's articles on the Next Gen academy.

The academies, oh the hysteria. Watch how there will be no noise once a Vic club snags one e.g. Tarryn Thomas and North

Agree.

Carlton will likely have Ethan Penrith bid on in the second round this year.

Irving Mosquito for Hawthorn will get a lot of attention next year. Changkuoth Jiath could see a second or third round bid this year.

The list is a rolling group, with more names set to be added as the year goes on and more players are identified by clubs. An AFL committee rules on each prospect's eligibility before the group is officially updated.

I'm waiting to see if one of the S.A. teams get Izak Rankine.
