Whilst i do agree that we find it tough matching up on opposition small forwards.
I think the bulk of that problem is coming from a lack of defensive pressure and speed of ball movement further up the ground. That is the area where we need to fix. And with some off season signings and the return of Bundy and Robbo hopefully things will be better there next year.

"Whilst i do agree that we find it tough matching up on opposition small forwards."

And this must be fixed!
As Lions aren't playing finals until they do!

To change defensive set up to that after winning first game with a different one?
Strange poor decision of the football department!

But it did not stop there, the logic of tying down our best intercept defensive mark in a key position post responsible for an opponent?

Harris, best story of 2016 taken out, not by opponents doing their home work by our own football department.

And where was management oversee of this?

To busy putting lipstick on the Ipswich Lions Springfield pig?

Yep, our list managers and scouts have been putting in overtime on the Springfield project.

You know list management and scouts are part of the football department?

Yes!

Management is the Lions management.

Browndog, better let it go old mate, your football knowledge starting to look questionable.

Ps, got anything intelligent to write about the logic of tying down our best intercept mark in Harris?

Seems to me whoever plays at fullback gets a big advantage of Harris providing chop out and dominating back half should he be kept free.

Lets hope football dept improves this year.

Mate, I don't agree with TBD on just about anything, and I gotta say, you aren't coming off well here. As a club, we have plenty of things to look at and fix before we can play finals again. I don't think any of those problems are that our coaches and list management team are distracted by project work for Springfield. Even if the Lions hadn't already told us that we have separate staff running that project, most people would understand that Fagan and Conole aren't writing up the building permits...

Patrick Keane just tweeted the Cat B prelistings and the rookie draft order - looks like we're not taking anyone other than Claye Beams in the draft (I'm assuming Hanley just goes straight back on to the list, since there's no spot for him in the standard options).
V. disappointing that we're not taking a Queensland selection, but I trust the club's decision. Looks like we're going from 8 rookies to 6. Who knows re Hanley, but let's hope so.

I just hope Mick Close gets picked up by the Hawks, or Port or someone.

Mate read the original post again, you have been mislead by browndogs post!

I did not suggested coaches and football dept were distracted by sprinfield.

I implied club management were not overseeing the football dept as club management were distracted by the Springfield pig of an idea?

Please try to take a moment to fully comprehend others poster before you respond as you do yourself a disservice.

Here's a depth chart I've created post the draft.
** indicates players drafted in 2016/2017
Plus we have added Hodge/Cameron/Frost via trade with unfortunately Frost looking like the only real error of judgement.
It certainly highlights how quickly Noble/Fagan/Conole have implemented change in 12 months at our footy club which was a rabble by the end of August 2016. There are still areas we lack like a small to medium left footed running defender, but all in all it's been an amazing transformation of a list across two drafts.

Not bad improving list, no doubt about it.

There is still a few who should not be on list as their speed and agility equates to them not making it at AFL level unless they find an ability to win a lot more ball.

Defensive line I'd free up Andrews to help others by dominating the back half with his intercept marking, so he starts in pocket on a team list (we all know in reality it doesn't work like that) with Payne or Eagles to shut down a opposition tall, so on team list appears as fullback. Extra pace of Cox or Witherden instead of Mayes in other back pocket, would be my suggested starting team in the pre season.

Not sure I'd be so quick to move Witherden from backline, looks good where he is?

D Beams and C Cameron on wings with free reign (be where your needed).

One of the things I most love about our draftees is that none of them really (except MAYBE Rayner) are ready for first 22 selection...but in two-three years time, if they have scratched even half of their huge potential, we will have a side ready to challenge. That's exciting AND enticing for players to stay or go there.

Suggestion to Management of this site (browndog, that's not list management or coaches).

Posters must disclaim if they are earning their income from the AFL or AFL Club.

Seems to be alot of protection going on.

Do you realise that even if you are writing anything of substance that nobody is going to listen because of your dismissive writing style?

You come across like a complete dickhead.

This is becoming an increasingly poor attempt at creating a troll account.

hey mate you saying we had oriignally preferred petruccle orrr he was on our list after Wooler?
We were keen on him,and it went almost to the wire, when the Coasters cut in, recruitment boys were worried that may happen, they have a good handle on what other teams are up to...they were also concerned that we didn't leave our bid on Bailey any later. They judged it all perfectly, right down to Payne. We did as well as anyone, and putting the last two years together, its been brilliant.

Thinking about it both Cox and Witherden play in backline, Mayes tries to make team on wing so starts in Neafl.

Hodge (this will be controversial) doesn't play in AFL or NEAFL, he coaches backline (runs around the backline in preseason positioning the youngsters and teaching Andrews to control backline as the free intercept marker position).

Hodge doesn't play for same reason he didn't want to go on at Hawthorn, so he doesn't interfere with younsters development.

I got that from your response to him actually. Usually I just ignore TBD's poor attempts at reductio ad absurdum. However when you then complained about management not overseeing an Andrews positional shift, I got very confused. The management who should be overseeing that is Fagan and Noble. If the board (incl CEO) are interjecting at that level, then they shouldn't be on a board. That's not their job. Your suggestion that they should be preventing that would be such micromanagement as to cripple the club.

And yes, I know, 15 scores over 100, worst in the league. Problem is, I'm happy for us to give up 15 scores over 100 a season if we're scoring 100 a game ourselves at a higher rate. Of course we're giving up a lot of points, our game style is shifting to a faster, more attacking style.

No one is debating that we aren't a great club yet. We won the spoon. Of course we didn't have a good season. But look at where we are going. I'm pretty pessimistic about our prospects long term under the current AFL trade rules, but even I think we've seeing a decent amount of growth and development in the last 12 months, with the prospect for a lot more in the next 12 months.
