Talls with potentials tend to get talked up until after most of the year they still haven't delivered, and then get dropped lower. See Todd Marshall last year as example - was listed in top 5 (even top 3) prospects on many people's lists for most of the year and ended up going late first round.

Opposite of mid/small sized prospects - they rise on draft boards through weight on performance, not potential alone.

My concern is the talk of the this being a shallow draft, both in genuine quality and depth. And that we might see the likes of Ballenden bid on earlier than you would normally expect to see.

My "gut feeling" from reading the Big Footy draft watchers (a lot who appear to talk to club recruiters at games) and from listening to Cal Twomey's and Brett Anderson's podcasts, is that the talent drafted in the back half of this years first round may be of similar quality to those drafted in the middle of last years second round.

That's not too much of a descrepency in relation to comparison of the talent boys of this and last years crop but I suppose does reiterate the supposed shallowness of this draft. I do find it quite funny how last year this crop was quite talked up and its turning out to be quite opposite and again this chatter is beginning for next year, its the perpetuating myth. However I can see your point with this current standing how this could impact on Ballenden being bid on earlier than expected with his current form (going on 18months).

I'll wait and see how many bottom agers make the AA team. I feel that is always a fair indication of how strong this years and next years draft crops are.

We are still lacking pace throughout the team. Would be super keen to add a fast inside mid to partner with Berry. LDU and Fogarty I think fit the bill as they both aren't slow for inside mids.
Spot on.
This is a draft thread. The whole purpose is discuss potential.
Innane...everyone has potential..the specifics, are the thing, skill areas, that are relevant to specific needs, then character and perseverance, potential is baloney.

Expect live trading at the draft next year

A MAJOR innovation could soon be introduced to draft night, with momentum growing for draft picks to be traded at the 2018 National Draft.

AFL.com.au understands the AFL's player movement working group, made up of senior list managers, club and AFL officials, discussed the issue in detail at a meeting on Wednesday.

The AFL has resolved to examine the issue with the aim of introducing the idea in 2018 if it is viable.

The AFL will also consider the more radical prospect of players who are drafted being traded to another club on draft night.

This would mean clubs could target players in the draft pool and offer a package to the club that selects them to try to get them to their club.

For example, if Port Adelaide had wanted in 2016 a player selected in the first 15 selections such as Fremantle's Griffin Logue (pick No.8) or North Melbourne's Jy Simpkin (pick No.11), it may have been able to package up the picks it held, picks 16 and 18, to entice the club holding that player to trade him.

Some clubs have the view that the academy and father-son bidding system already sees clubs attempting to grab players that other clubs have committed to by making a bid, so the change would not be such a huge leap.

Live trading of draft picks would give clubs the chance to assess the value of their draft picks as the night unfolded and trade with other clubs to increase their likelihood of getting players they target.

Making trades during the draft has been a central element to sport in America, with NFL and NBA clubs able to trade players as well as picks during their respective drafts.

The group also heard feedback from Carlton list manager Stephen Silvagni, who travelled to America in April to examine how the process worked at the NFL Draft.

The AFL is also looking at making a change to free agency, with the issue discussed during collective bargaining negotiations.

The most likely change is that players who switch clubs as free agency will retain free agency status when they next come out of contract at their new club.

I'm not sure if I like it or not..it would definitely make the draft more of a spectacle which is something the AFL is certainly pushing for
I'd be worried if we didn't have a good operator... thankfully Noble's got the keys now. This seems like the type of innovation that he'd relish

From the snippets of the WA v SA game, he looks to have quite the full skill set. Fast, tough, courageous and can kick a bag of goals. Would expect him to go very early.

He looks pretty classy.
We havent been pjcking to many SA boys of late though.

Next year could be awesome for us to take advantage.

There are a lot of academy, nga and fs kids rated pretty high. And none are ours, which will make our first pick very valuable to a lot of clubs.

Already said, Izak Rankine would be my 2018 pick.
well, one is - Blakey. But I guess your point stands, considering it seems we're a long-shot to land him.

I did hear someone say that he was possibly leaning towards the Lions a while back. Haven't heard anything further since then though. He would be a good get.

All I've heard is from Callum Twomey and Brett Anderson, and they're both saying Sydney then North then us a long way back. That said, both of them were convinced that Schache was going. It's possible they can't conceive of anybody wanting to play for us.

At the moment it is hard to see why the kid would choose us over Sydney. I don't reckon he'd be that keen to get to the Kangaroos either.

I'd like to think we could mount a better case than the Roos. Sydney would be hard to refuse with
A) his family already based there.
B) a strong culture with a proven development system.
C) a good chance of consistently playing finals.

Add Tarryn Thomas to North Melbourne. There's Gold Coast's academy kid as well.

Then at the top of the draft there is currently quite a few talls being talked.

Could be clubs looking to move up to get an early pick in before having to match a bid on an academy kid.

Or a club chasing a top end tall.

Dunno they have a few issues to work through. The major one being trading. If someone trades pick 3 they will want 2 picks but you have to have already cleared out space on your list so bringing in another pick would kill off you last pick? Or if it doesn't could be a way of exploiting academy points which would make Eddie's head explode

With GWS losing their first round pick, we'll have 3 picks inside the top 18.

Pick 1, Port's pick & Pick 18.

I'd wait and see if there are any first round free agency compensation picks. First pick of the second round last year was pick 22, as there was one priority pick and two compensation picks. In 2015, first pick of the second round was pick 24.

The trade period this year shapes as the biggest yet, with some big name players out of contract, and the salary cap going up by 20%.
