Can he ever; has pace to burn, is evasive and football smarts; would make a nice addition next year.

Oh absolutely. I'd expect him to start forward and pinch hit in the ruck, but in a few seasons time be 80% ruck/20% forward, with a Schache or someone else pinch hitting in the ruck. Could work out perfectly in the end, might be tough to find him a spot in the seniors the first couple of seasons though. Patience is needed with this one.

Can't see us spending a first rounder on a ruck though. If the Lions share your views we'll probably pass.

I know I initially brought up Payne through what I'd heard from an academy coach but I had never seen him. He already looks very well built, you could see him playing fullback in the firsts in a few years.

Yep, I'm more excited by Payne as a prospect than Ballenden to be honest.

It all comes down to where in the first round someone bids on him ... top 10 then I think for sure we pass, anything from the very end of the first onwards we match. That 11-16 I'm not sure about.

Kicks pretty nicely too. He doesn't seem to be super mobile, but might be a good option for the gorilla forwards.

On Ballenden, maybe I'm looking through my Lions glasses but I feel like he's been burned a few times by kickers choosing other and worse options. Was a nice contested mark on the lead and his field kicking looks pretty good. He certainly doesn't look a spearhead KPF prospect, but there's a bit there to work with I think.

Pretty much every year, they have prospects drafted higher than us.

I'm not sure, but given our track record with injuries and the like, we're fairly covered for key position players, which hasn't always been the case and fortunately a nice position to be in.

South Australia have a fair bit more class, especially from their under-agers. Lukosius looks precocious.

Like others have said Payne has been solid and is a good build. Was hoping for more from Clayton though...

I was reading the draft board the other day and one of the phantom drafters said he would have had him very high up his draft board last year. briztoon is a big fan as well.
