So..free agency starts pre-draft does it?
What a joke

I'm an unabashed Rayner fan and would love him in Brisbane, and with the form he has shown the past few games he would absolutely know what it means to be pick one. If you're volunteering for the draft you should know what you're in for.

I have complete faith in our system going forward regardless. We really seem to have taken a great step forward this year

That is a bit of a worry, guys like Anderson and Twomey would talk to the players and recruiters all through the year. If our staff find there is something to it do we draft him anyway and back our welfare, coaching and playing group to turn him around? Personally I would unless he comes straight out in an interview with our recruitment staff and says "no I don't want to go to Brisbane and will be trying to return home ASAP" ah la Chad Wingard, then it's pass time and go for who we rate next.

If he's the consensus pick 1, we have to take him regardless I think. He fits our needs and there's no football reason not to take him.
it worse if we go the safe option and then he becomes a star IMO.
Pick 1 is so valuable, and not something we'll get the opportunity to have all that much hopefully, just have to take the best kid and back in the culture to keep him I reckon.

What teams do people see being worse in 2018 than they are in 2017?
North Melbourne- Still to bottom out IMO. They have 2 KPP well over 30 ie. Jarred Waite and Scott Thompson.
Hawthorn- 1, 2 or all of Hodge, Burgoyne and Gibson could go at the end of the year.
Carlton- I think will go down again before going back up, they have a couple of older guys playing really well ATM who they rely on heavily, could fall rapidly eg. (age next year) Kade Simpson (34), Marc Murphy (31) as well as Bryce Gibbs who may want to get to the Crows again at the end of the year.

That is without taking into account our expected improvement next year although I still see us in the 11th to 16th range next year depending on trade ins and injury. If D.Beams, Rockliff, Zorko, Rich, Christensen, Robinson, Robertson, Andrews (and Charlie Cameron;)) can get a full pre season in and play the vast majority of the 2018 season I think we could be closer to 11th than 16th.

I still would like to trade a 5th round pick for Burgoyne.
Would do it in a heartbeat. 1 year player/coach, 2 years coaching, or Luke Hodge, not Josh Gibson though he is cooked.

If the rookie list goes the way of the dinosaur it would make even more sense, more room to maneuver deals like this one.

May come down to who is the least of a flight risk between Rayner , LDU or Stephenson seems little between the top 4 or 5 players at this stage

If any player said that to our recruiters I would hope those players are reported to the AFL with the expectation they'd be ineligible for the draft for a year or two, although I have no confidence the AFL would follow through given how weak they generally are in such circumstances.

If we're convinced Reyner is the #1 pick and he says he doesn't want to play for us, then we absolutely must look to deal with North or the Saints and try and get to pick 2 or 3 with a good kicker. We'll draft LDU or Stephenson (pref Steph) and hopefully a second in the top 20. Clugga + Berry x2.

Disagree. I think they bottomed out 2nd half of last year when they lost all those games in a row. They have put a bit of youth into their team this year and despite their ladder position they have been better than what most people picked.

Agree. Wouldn't be a great reflection on their character either.

One of us will be right, we will find out in the fullness of time.

I'm not really keen on Stephenson.

I had a good look at him last game. He's really thin, and it's noticeable that he's been hitting the weights.

I'm concerned he doesn't have the frame to put on and carry enough weight.

And from multiple reports he's very outside. Concerns on field kicking and contested possessions.

Disagree, doesn't win his own ball at the junior level which is a big concern when playing with the big boys.
For example Aish and Toumpas had an issue with winning their own ball in the juniors

You can see that our spine is really starting to stand up and believe that's why we won today. You can see when you draft players that have talent and also footskills it goes along way to helping win a game as evidenced by Witherden and McCluggage. Hope that the club stays on this thread of drafting these types. The difference maker will be to keep building our midfield depth and will be the reason we start winning more games.
