I really don't think we can afford to have another season like last years. Yes we will get another draft pick or 2 but players are just seeing this never ending cycle where we finish bottom, few older players leave, more young kids come in and we keep getting younger. Players like McStay, Cutler and as of late potentially Schache need to see this club competing and grabbing wins. Realistically, we probably need another season before we can start rising up the ladder bit by bit. I see that if we have another season like last years, then we can kiss Cutler and McStay goodbye, which would be a bugger as l think they are 2 of our better propsects. Cutler has huge potential and McStay in the right environment could be a great factor (we just havent found the right way to develop him yet)

I might be wrong here but I don't think we can use Ports pick for matching so it's basically a first round pick at wherever Port end up.

Bourrich, welcome aboard. So you think we'll finish last so our own pick is safe from having to use to match a bid.

Source for your information?

Yes, we have heard/read that we might not be allowed to use Ports pick to match a bid. Which would be fantastic for us.

Does anyone know who originally owned the pick that Gold Coast used to match the bid on Jack Bowes last draft, and when it was traded in?

I don't not believe we're in for the same type of season as last year. I don't expect our win loss record to be much, if any better. I do expect us to be much more competitive, with far fewer large blow outs. I'll be happy with our pick a top two pick.

I really hope we don't lose any players of significance next offseason, and can begin a climb up the ladder from 2018.

I don't think it's that we CAN'T use Port's pick. I believe it's that we don't HAVE to use Port's pick. Ballenden gets a bid, and then we get asked if we'd like to match it and which picks we would like to use to match it (obviously we can't keep our normal picks, but some picks (eg. Port's 1st rder) can be used at our discretion.

Also, for those suggesting that they're happy for Ballenden to tumble down the draft order - does any remember Cain Tickner? Between him and Isaac Conway, they were supposed to be our 1st and 2nd picks in the draft. Absolute guns in their underage years. Tickner didn't get drafted, Conway ended up on the rookie list. I believe the only academy player drafted that year was Freeman - which a lot of people weren't expecting. Point is - I'd rather Ballenden be worth a top 10 pick and us pay a top 10 pick than him be worth nothing and us get nothing.

Seriously, do people have to use the <s>sarcasm</s> font for sh!t to be clear.
Subtle changes in tone is hard to convey over text. In my experience, the best way to express sarcasm has been through the use of Simpson's memes. Much clearer.

Rayner write up:
19. Cameron Rayner – 187cm – Midfield/Forward

"Rayner showed why he is considered in the top bracket of this years draft with his aerial dominance and ball wining ability on show. Rayner played mostly in the midfield where he won plenty of ball on the inside and outside, showing his composure and agility, he was able to avoid tacklers with ease and took the time to be clean by hand and foot with his skills a standout of his game. Rayner took some impressive marks and he turned the game on its head in the 3rd kicking some nice goals."

I saw 10 minutes of the 3rd quarter and Rayner was very impressive.

I know you're a big fan off his and have made the Petracca connection and I look forward to hearing more about him from you as you obviously get to see him throughout the year.
Yeah I am a big fan. I won't see much of his TAC Cup form(Unless AFL Victoria continue to live stream games) as I am based in Queensland but I'll see all the U18 Champs matches and keep close tabs on how he is performing in the TAC Cup. He's an exciting prospect that's for sure.

From Fox Sports draft prospects wrap:

Connor Ballenden

Club: Brisbane Lions Academy/Uni of QLD/Queensland

Position: Tall Forward

Size: 198cm, 95kg

DOB: 29/03/1999

Plays like: Jesse Hogan

Champion Data says: We have covered 12 matches of Ballenden and he has booted 19 goals from these matches. His contested marking stands out, with 17 from these matches.

foxfooty.com.au says: At an imposing 198cm, Ballenden looms as one of the most exciting prospects of the draft. Due to that, the Lions won’t even hesitate matching a bid on their academy gun come draft time. Ballenden is a true power forward with excellent one-on-one skills and the ability to hit the scoreboard. However the highly-rated Lions key forward had a frustrating start to his 2017 draft year, appearing to injure a calf against the Suns Academy on the weekend.

Jack Clayton

Club: Brisbane Lions Academy/Uni of QLD/Queensland

Position: General Defender

Size: 184cm, 74kg

DOB: 25/02/1999

Plays like: Bachar Houli

Champion Data says: Clayton played nine matches for the Brisbane Lions NEAFL side last year, averaging 14 disposals off half-back. Our similar players metric suggests the AFL player he plays most like is Bachar Houli.

foxfooty.com.au says: A class act both on and off the field, the Lions will be looking forward to, hopefully, welcoming Clayton to the club as an academy selection. He’s a damaging rebounding half-back that uses his excellent kicking skills to his advantage.

Something of note in this article is Subiaco small forward Liam Ryan who kicked over 40 goals in the WAFL last year and was overlooked in the draft despite being one of the best mature aged prospects kicked 6 goals in Round 1 of the WAFL. If he can have another season like last year I think he'll get picked up.
Read this earlier and Fagan stated about the need for small forwards needed on our list which I also believe. Midfield and small forwards in this draft IMO. As Jackess pointed out, an improvement with aerobic fitness for Liam but the boys got skills!

Much rather have Charlie Spargo or Jack Higgins or even our boy Lachie Harris.

Your man Ethan Penrith had a fairly ordinary game on Sunday. Higgins gets a lot of the ball but many are chip kicks not greatly to advantage, much like Rocky. I'm tipping Joel Garner's value will rise as the season progresses. But I must say I favour Spargo as a small forward/mid and keep your eye on Nick Richards from the Bushrangers. A little gem.

Wouldn't refer to him as my man. If I've pumped anyone up and jumped into the drivers seat of the bandwagon it is Rayner:D But yeah I'd already heard Penrith had a shocker over the weekend.

I'm torn.

It could get crowded down the bottom of the ladder, and Port might be as bad as we all hoped. I want us to be bad to get one more high draft pick, but I would like to see us do well in regards to expectations this year.

I believe we need one more top 2 or top 3 pick, one more potential star/super star young player, as well as a very good player with Ports pick before we focus on climbing the ladder.

Also, if Ballenden isn't an absolute stud (and Schache re-signs), I would prefer to us our first two picks on the best midfield talent available, even if it means losing out on Ballenden. If Schache doesn't re-sign, then I want a top 2 or 3 pick back for him and we draft Ballenden.

I'd take a good season over another high draft pick any day of the week but I don't think it is worth getting "torn" over at this stage anyway. We are a young side and we'll be inconsistent throughout the year. I still think we'll be there abouts in regards to the bottom 4 but I'm hopeful for a 7/8 win season. I can't see Port finishing top 8 to be frank so at worst I still think we'll have two top 10 picks.

Confidence does a lot of things. Them beating Sydney last week has bound to give them that. I can see them getting a role on especially with the easiest draw.
