If we could pull off a trick like last year ,which got us say, both Bailey and Dow or Stephenson, that would be great.
I love the idea of taking some X-factor and/or pace this off season so I am all for Rayner/Stephenson combo, don't know anything about Dow other than a few write ups on the draft board and hadn't heard of Bailey till the last day or so (I follow the draft prospects but not as closely as some on our board). I do like the sound of and the highlights I have seen of Adam Cerra.

I watch LDU and I think safe, solid B grade type at best. Nothing wrong with B grade players and generally, your doing pretty well if you pick one up. I think Dow has more potential than any other midfielder in the draft, bar maybe Rayner.

Previously, I've generally been one to disagree with the majority about the depth's of upcoming drafts. I'm left a little disappointed with the quality and depth of this one though.

On Dow, he's a hard working inside midfielder that possesses speed and agility. Whilst his kicking is far from elite, I find him to generally be a reliable user of the ball by foot. He's not ever going to cut teams up with his disposal, he'll be cutting them up with his break away speed from congestion. Pushes hard defensively and unlike most highly rated inside players, he has a decent outside game as well. The other encouraging sign is his ability to push forward and get on the scoreboard.

If anyone else here has met with him, I'm sure they'll agree that he is a pretty level headed kid with a sense of direction. Doesn't strike me as a home sick type, off face value anyway.

I haven't seen an inside midfielder as well rounded as Dow come through the junior ranks for a while. Genuinely believe he will be a star.

Big wraps for him, sounds like a great prospect, someone that should interest our recruiters.

Just on a Rayner/Dow comparison, what has you putting Dow ahead ? Is it simply Rayner fitness concerns and if he'll transition into an AFL standard Mid or more to it then that?

See you didn't have Lachie O'Brien in your top 10 either, would be a great outcome if we could select him with Port pick IMO, didn't have the greatest Championship but would give us great run and ball use on the wing.

Whilst Rayner's fitness is a concern, it's not my main reason for preferring Dow. I'm not too sure where he winds up long term, ideally it's as a midfielder. I just think Dow's a better prospect going forward.

I rate O'Brien, but others have gone past him in my eyes. Would happily see him selected with the Port pick.

Wonder if we can do a deal with the team just below us (assuming we end up with Pick 1) similar to last year. If they want Rayner, then we trade down from pick 1 to 2 and get a lower pick from 15-25. We still get the player we want.

Original thought. Such insight.:thumbsu:

We need the the most determined kid with pace n a brain!!! Not much to wish for surely?

I recall you watch a lot of U18 champs and TAC cup Len. Who in your opinion you think will go pick 1? Could there be a smokie?
Further to your previous query SM, at today's training at Wesley, I was informed that we had our eyes on a kid from Noosa, who may have played one ressies game, even last week, who is a full back, and apparently has burst into calculations, has an aths background in field events. All news to me,but they are tryi g to keep him under wraps.

So you go and post it on a public forum?

That would most definitely be Jack Payne. Looks a very good prospect but all AFL clubs got a good look at him during the U18 champs were he played very well. I know Dan Merrett said we were trying to hide him a bit but his form during the champs made every one take notice.

Better/more scope to improve than Declan Watson SM?

Personally I think they are relatively even and I suspect Payne will get picked up in the 30s much like Watson. I think they are quite similar as players but I'd have Payne as the slightly better 1 on 1 defender.

If we're keen on drafting Ballenden and Payne, then we're going to need to take 5 draft picks to the draft, and possibly look to upgrading our 5th round pick to at least a mid or early 4th round pick.

Given Payne couldn't get a regular game in the Allies I'd be shocked if he went in the 30's. More like the 50's or even later (or am I just being hopeful)

Payne was really strong over the ball in the reserves last weekend, he didn't look out of place physically at all.

Yes, as Len stated earlier he comes from an athletics background. I think shot put from memory so he would have some core strength you would imagine. You don't make state championships if you don't have the genetics behind you (shot put especially) + hard work etc.
