I think it is a very smart ploy to draft country dudes rather than city slickers. Builds an us against them mentality which may increase the solidarity within the club. Only have to be careful that niches within the club dont form such as queenslanders vs country vs city slickers.

My main concern with this draft is that the top rated players aren't really elite draft prospects. Have a look at the discussion of LDU and Rayner for example with both having areas of their game which are lacking and they're the mostly two top rated prospects. Agree with the lack of 'heavy lifting' concerns about LDU especially when you think we would be needing inside mids. There are players in the top 20/30 who will go on and have good AFL careers and I just hope we are able to draft those who ever they are.

I think there will be some really great players to come from this draft, but no one has really stamped themselves as the standout sure fire draft prospect you'd hope for, which sucks considering we will be holding one of the highest picks.

Looking at the top prospects there's a good mix of midfield height and late birthdays, meaning there could be significant development left in a quiet a few. I really like what Rayner, Dow and Cerra could develop into, then throw in Stephenson, LDU, Fogarty, Constable and Coffield and that potential in the top mix is very exciting.

I also think Lachie O'Brien is being very underrated at the moment, think we will see him climb the draft boards as the year goes on too.

Looking forward to hopefully a strong finish to the TAC and we can see the true strength of the draft.

We're in that phase of the draft cycle where everyone focuses on the weaknesses of the best players. It is a by-product of over-exposure and people trying to piece together conclusive opinions based on limited and often second hand knoweldge.

It happened last year too. Everyone forgets having the same conversations about McGrath's midfield potential, McCluggage's size, Ainsworth's engine etc.

The reality is there's no such thing as a perfect player so there's not much point measuring a 17/18yo against an impossible standard. They'll all have weaknesses. Very few will have weaknesses which are terminal to their long term footy careers.

I worry that Sambono matchstick legs will snap if a Robbo type tries to give him a corky.....

That was always my fear with Nigel Lappin, for all 279 games ;). To be fair, he did have a broken leg or two.

Jack Martin going ok though, i honestly dont think being skinny matters when you have footy smarts.

Like watching Jack M play. Strong mark for skinny arms
And good skills, he is a beautiful kick of the ball. And actually pretty good in the contest for a bloke of his size.

I just want a legitimate small forward. From the NEAFL games I've watched I think sambono could be a real special player. Also as always brought up there's that excitement machine from WA Ryan I think he is.

With the excitement machine Hipwood already up forward one of those two guys would add a lot to help bringing the fans back.

Nothing helps bring the fans back then exciting players. Used to love watching Hooper run round for us

Billy agree with the want in this area, but does Sambono play as a genuine small forward though?
Kicks goals (although hasn't now for 2 weeks), but just as important is pressure acts in this role. Chasing, tackles inside 50, etc, in the limited times I have seen him (NEAFL) he hasn't come across as that type. With our forward set-up it is important that both of these aspects are strong.

If both are not offered we may well be looking at a combination of some that we have let go in recent years, and he cannot be classified as a legitimate small forward despite having some tricks.

Who's the Richard Osborne type guy..saw a vid..hard to pass up yeah ?? edit I think his name is RAYNER

Well, I hear Dow rides around a metal sled devised by his father.

From my limited draft report reading Rainer seems to have seperated himself from the pack as the no 1. With north and Carlton picking behind us currently on the ladder if the season finished today is he good enough that either would trade up...I can see us being more into LDU and Dow (who I really like the sign of)

Reckon Adam Cerra or Paddy Dow for us with first pick the 2 to watch

It is looking like we will not end up with pick 1, I'm tipping we will end up 16th in front of North and Carlton. This would mean in all likely hood we will not be getting Cameron Rayner, that being the case I am now on the Paddy Dow or Nick Coffield (Not currently rated this high but I think he could surge) train. Thanks to Knightmare for the write ups below.

2. Paddy Dow (VIC)
Best position: Inside midfield
Height, weight: 184cm, 78kg
Recruited from: Bendigo Pioneers
Projected draft range: First round
Similar to: Luke Shuey
June Ranking: Not ranked
Rationale: Possesses a winning mix of attributes and impact per possession through the midfield with contested ball winning, acceleration from the contest and skillset. Under-18 Championships performances have made clear that he is a top end prospect. May be the best midfielder in this draft.
Strengths:
First possession winner at coalface
Stoppage work
Burst out of stoppages at speed
Acceleration
Desperation
Tackling
High impact per possession
Clean skills
Lowers eyes
Composure
Evasive in traffic
Scoreboard impact
Weaknesses:
Needs to find more of the ball

14. Nicholas Coffield (VIC)
Best position: General defence/inside midfield
Height, weight: 190cm, 83kg
Recruited from: Northern Knights
Projected draft range: First to second round
Similar to: Jackson Nelson
June Ranking: 13
Rationale: One of the few players this year with genuine class and composure with ball in hand. At his height and mix of attributes has the scope to develop into a midfielder.
Strengths:
Sidestepping and composure in traffic
Sound decision maker in traffic
Classy ball user and clean kick over a variety of distances
Agility
Clean at ground level
Intercept marking
Production
Weaknesses:
Having played mostly back, he remains somewhat unproven as a midfielder other than for short periods
Contested ball winning
Stoppage work

Sold. Seriously though, this is a pressing need for us. Probably the most pressing as I feel like Taylor and McCluggage are starting to show that we aren't actually as light on for outside class as I thought. We need a player (or players) who can use their speed at stoppages both ways. Watching Beams trail Murphy out of a stoppage at half pace yesterday was not great.

Also, does that Coffield profile sound a lot like Berry or what?

You mean having contested ball and stoppage work as weaknesses?

Err... yes?
I think I missed the large Weaknesses heading :p
Unless I've got the bulls by the horns carnthemlions was talking about Paddy Dow.

Paddy Dows only weakness was "needs to find more of the ball".

The contested ball and stoppages weakness was Coffield.

Do you get the impression that Constable may have moved ahead of Coffield, more physically developed, and covers a lot of positional bases ? Incidentally, Charlie Spargo, who I think is a tremendous small, and played under age last year but has been injured, would be a great 3 or 4 pick,Terry Wallace, who is not a favourite but does take an interest in this area, promoted him last week, very strongly.
