According to Bishop Luke Davies-Uniacke was the clear standout with 22 disposals and 6 clearances. He's a big, powerful, contested ball winning midfielder. The kind of player our midfield could really use.

Two main knocks I have read about LDU is a poor kick (same has been said about Worpel, but Bishop recently said that's par for the course for inside contested mids), and lack of pace.

Been an interesting start to the season so far. Have been quite a few good performances, but no one has really stood up yet with a standout performance. Often read, great first half but player ran out of steam in the second half, or player worked their way in to the game and had a good second half of the game.

Who is that in the pic Lionshine? Talk about a massive AFL ready body. He looks bigger than plenty of blokes who have already had a few AFL preseasons under their belt

Ummm Sam Kerridge (Carlton listed player)

I expect us to draft a live wire small forward with pace to burn this draft. Any draft watchers able to throw some names up? I've seen some talk of Liam Ryan and he looks a goer from some footage I've seen. Exactly the kind of bloke we desperately ned on our list.
I don't know if there are any out and out small forward towards the top end of this years draft. Certainly no one like Ben Ainsworth, or Jy Simpkin before his injury, from last year.

There are few forward/mid types who could play the role. Carlie Spargo, and Jack Higgins are smaller types.

Personally I'd sooner look at Cameron Rayner, a bigger bodied mid/forward. I'd look to play McCluggage and Rayner up forward as they develop their bodies and tank, before they transition to midfield.

Thank god their are no smalls forwards rated in the top 10 at the moment. I would hate to use a 1st round pick on a small forward. I agree with you, historically elite goal kicking midfielders and KPP talent should be a priority as 1st round selections.

I have no problem taking the best available talent. If the best talent is a small forward or HBF, and we have a need for an elite small forward or HBF, then I am drafting him. Just because historically something has been down a certain way, doesn't mean we should keep doing things that way.

Look at the game now. The rules are slowly changing, resulting in coaches changing game plans and game style and what type of players they use in different parts of the ground. Need to draft the appropriate players to suit todays game, not how the game has historically been played.

Understand your sentiments in drafting best available but you also do need to take into account your teams list needs. Our midfield depth is woeful and besides the big 3 of Zorko, Beams and Rockliff the real next possible group are first/second year players. Hopefully we continue adding to this via the next couple of drafts. Small/speedy forwards can be taken a little bit later in the second/third round as it's obviously a need. There does need to be one proviso for next few groups of draftees though, if you're not one touch, can't kick, can't win own ball and if Lester can beat you in a running race need not apply.

Speed is becoming ever more critical all around the ground. Elite speed is going to be something that a lot of clubs will look for in the next few drafts I would think. We have few genuinely fast players and we certainly need some who can destroy opposition defensive lines with their pace.

My dream shopping list for the draft would be (in no particular order):

A skillful inside/outside mid with real pace and scoreboard hurt. Able to burn the opposition off out of the contest.
A super-quick elusive small forward who regularly scores goals - preferably ready to go from day one.
Ballenden
A fast small defender with a great kick and good instincts for taking the game on.
a really tough solid inside midfielder with endurance - first to the ball and tackles hard.
a speculative boom or bust mid/forward who might be nothing or might be one of the greats.

I doubt we would pick up a tall defender of enough quality through the draft that it wouldn't ultimately just be a wasted pick, unless there is one of absolute quality who is ready to play.

I would think six picks would be plenty and in fact we might not even use that many this year. No use adding kore of what we already have. Depending how we trade and who we let go, we might not go past four quality picks and leave it at that.

I can see Lochie O'Brien becoming a real consideration at one of our picks (depending where he would sit on our draft board) and seeing that he is an outside mid the other would need to be a pure inside mid.

Small Forwards are an interesting one for us. We're yet to see Christensen have a decent crack at that role, I think it could be a great role for him with his skill set. If we're able to get some decent midfield prospect, we mightn't be too reliant on Zorko through the midfield , having him spending time as a pressure forward could be good too.

I don't see it as a urgent requirement over other positions just yet. Having seen some of the success stories in this position with later selections, McDonald Tipunguti, Fantasia, Papley, Castagna, Butler, Cameron etc it could be well worth the club taking a bit of a scattergun approach (like we did this year with HBF with good disposal) with our later selections to try and unearth a gem

Seeing you've listed Ryan over a more rated prospect in Spargo, you maybe thinking along a similar line.

I'm really liking Rayner as a prospect, enough of a bull around the contest and doesn't look like a butcher with ball in hand. Can see the Petrecca comparisons.

Our midfield depth is very young, not non-existent. We've got: Taylor, Keays, Cutler (think he'll end up a mid still), McLuggage, Berry, Witherden (could end up a mid), Cox and William.

Drafting more will not help short term, but we are building for a long term elite midfield which I think we have some nice ingredients to work with already. Another draft or two and it'll be set.

Mathieson too

Yup, wasn't advocating using a top 10 pick on a small forward as others may have thought. I think Bundy will be great value up there if he can improve his defensive running and tackling. Most of the later selections you noted have one thing in common and thats pace. Really hoping we take a punt or two on some likely types with a good turn of speed. It really can make a huge difference even if they aren't the most talented blokes running around.
