A couple of the other top rated kids in next years draft are northern academy and next generation academy kids, so while very talented, are already spoken for.

The chance to draft the top two kids in this years draft and get them in to our system would have to be weighed seriously.

Have they actually clarified how the next gen bidding will go this coming year. I know it was only rookie stuff last year, and this year talk is about them getting a discount on them, but there's actually nowhere that I have seen (and i've looked a fair bit) that actually states how it will work. There's a story here or two from the hawks and others alluding to that it will be like the northern academies, however I haven't seen anything actually released from the AFL as yet. Club stories are massively unreliable usually when they're written.

There is an article by Cal Twomey on the AFL website about the next gen academies. Bidding will be exact the same for F/S and northern academies.

It's interesting this year's draft. No one knows who will be pick 1. Last year McCLuggage was almost a certainty for pick 1 at this point. Would love to trade down like we did last year with GWS...

Might work in our favour with a few of the KP types looking the goods, but not what we need. Might be a club willing to trade up yo grab a Brander or Rayner. A 3-5 pick will still probably get us the player we want/need.

wouldnt be against trading down to a 5 if we could pick up another pick in the teens to go with it.

Depending on where Ballenden falls, might even be worth our while to trade pick 1 and ports first for 2 top 10 picks, just to try get that 2nd pick in before a bid for Ballenden. doing that essentially creates an extra early pick, for just moving back a few spots at the top, which might not be a problem for us depending on who we target anyway.

Yep make this happen please. Those three players and a bit extra would be a massive haul! Initially I thought Ballenden would be excessive to our needs, or at least lower on priorities, so don't overpay for him, but I seriously think Shache, Hippy and him forward would be a massive headache for opposition defence. All three offer difference and Hippys speed and Schache ability to get up the field and use it well (ala Nick Riewoldt) makes it possible. And when we look too tall rotate all three through the ruck! ( Hippy with some weight on and his amount of crazy might just make a few taps ) Our other two picks focus on pace/inside outside mid and it all starts to look pretty solid!

I just feel that we won't be able to carry all 3 in our team. Hippy, Schache and Ballenden are all very tall and l don't think they offer a lot of defensive run.

Yeah I hear you and that's what I thought initially. It's a little bit apples and oranges but Hale,Buddy,Roughead (granted they had a Cyril) or Tippet,Goodes,Franklin,Reid scenario worked.(ish) Now I get they all aren't quite as tall but 2m is the new 190. I think in time Hippy will be very good defensively and yep it's a gamble, but if it did work out it, and they developed as hoped, try and stop them!

Ballenden still projects as a ruck/forward. GWS certainly didn't look unbalanced with Cameron, Patton and Mumford.

Regardless, quality key position depth is a luxury most clubs simply aren't able to accumulate. We are in a unique position to be able to do so, and at a discount. At best it saves your arse in a premiership season when one of your talls gets injured. At worst it gives you some very valuable trade chips going forward.

Yeah but one of the coaches said when he went forward there were elements of Tom Lynch about him IIRC
That comment came from Shifter. He reckons all u18 rep kids are future champions. And re the Mumford comparison, they were talking about the other Allies ruck, Crossley, not Ballenden.

Cameron, Patton and Lobb? or are we playing Ballenden as a full time ruck in that comparison?

Forgot Lobb. Just strengthens my point that you can easily carry three talls if they are genuine quality and you get the rest of your setup right.

especially when 1 of the 3 can actually ruck, not just get thrown in because they are tall. Gives you options if someone goes down with injury or even the ability to put a tall on the bench for a rest, get a extra runner on late in a quarter.

Give it another couple of preseasons and my bet is that Hipwood will be one of the better tall forwards when it comes to defensive pressure. The only things holding him back right now is his lack of endurance and lack of strength. But he's got great movement and his attitude towards the team stuff is superb.

I think most teams would if they had good enough players. The trend toward playing fewer talls seems to have been driven more by a lack of quality (or even serviceable) options than anything else- which is why Collingwood and Richmond have gone with one tall at times this season.

LDU not doing much for Vic Country and his disposal has been off. Worpel getting a fair bit of it and his disposal has been OK. Liking the look of Matthew Ling.
