I'm warming to Coffield especially if the club sees Witherden's future as a midfielder. I am a big fan of O'Brien but can't see him falling out of the top 10.

Was big on O'Brien coming into the year, would love to add his run and carry and ball use into our side. Much like you thou I don't think he and Port will slide enough to make it happen on draft day.

Nice to see GWS out of the first round for once.

They'll be back in if they lose Kelly though obviously.

They might have multiple first round picks by the end of trade period. 2018 first rounders look like premium so clubs may part with this years. bottom agers look more classy in TAC cup as well.

I'm the opposite. The fact that he's a Vic Metro boy is a cross in my book. :p

I reckon we can well and truly move on from the GH5 era. We are now developing the culture and improvement to back ourselves to retain anyone. And McStay, Cutler and Lester are recent metro boys who have McStayed. Vic Country is only really a country team in name, with almost half (19 out of 41) of the current squad from Dandenong and Geelong TAC cup teams. Luke Davies-Uniacke is a country boy, but he's from Dandenong Stingrays. Not really any different from Coffield being from Eltham... both outer Melbourne suburbs. Seems like Vic Metro is a bit ahead this year and maybe where our first pick should come from. Let's just go best available, wherever they live.

Fair enough, didn't know he was from Rye, but reckon my point sill stands. We can keep anyone... I'd be most nervous about the Adelaide boys.

Florent is a good example who was touted as a flight risk and just signed on for 2 more years. I agree, think we can now back ourselves in to keep anyone.

I think generally we go OK with the Adelaide boys putting the Prince aside & the Adelaide soft top cruiser Polec

So who's the consensus pick 2? Reckon we're gonna sneak into 17th. Our post bye footy has been a massive improvement. Pushing good teams and beating anyone slightly off. Geelong have been inconsistent this year and we have Carlton, north, suns and dogs still to play.

17th and raising. A top 4 pick is all I'm betting on at the moment. We might get on a roll here.

Has the worrying about retaining Vic Metro players been overblown? As has been pointed out we've gone ok retaining the likes of Lester, McStay and Cutler. Also, if you look at the players we've lost in recent times, only 2 were from Vic Metro-

Patrick Karnezis- Vic Metro
Billy Longer- Vic Metro
Sam Docherty- Vic Country
Jared Polec- SA
Elliot Yeo- WA
Jack Crisp- Vic Country
James Aish- SA

Better make the most of our top pick this year, be the last pick inside 1-3 we'll have for a while.
Still think we won't be pushing top 8 for at least another 3 years. We are just that young. Of course would be ecstatic if we 'do a dogs' and snatch a cup in 2 years time.

I think the issue is more that highly drafted Vic Metro players have a proven record of going home/ making it clear that they don't want to leave Victoria eg. Petracca, Dunkley etc.

2019 we should be pushing for finals. Next year around 8 wins in that 12-15 bracket. Who knows though. We bring in Cameron and Sicily and have a good year with injuries we may be close next year.

Yeah ok fair enough. It does happen with players from other states as well though e.g. Wingard and SA.

Reminder for those with Fox Footy that there are a couple of u/18 championship games televised tomorrow:

2:00pm - Vic Metro v Allies
4:30pm - Vic Country v SA

Could get ugly for the Allies...but it'll be interesting if Ballenden plays in the backline again as that's where Stephensen has played for Metro in the past few games.

Haven't seen much of Ballenden at all :(

Edit: now had two intercept marks and has read the flight really well.

You jinxed him into action!

Probably Clayton's best game of the champs too, as he misses a goal from 50m. He looks a nice field kick though... late ND to rookie chance I would've thought
