Just on the Rayner vs LDU discussion, I'm all for Rayner at this stage.

Those really dangerous forwards that can go rotate through the middle can be real game changers. There seems to be a real trend toward those types, although not all the same type we've seen Petrecca, Dusty, Walter, Wingard, Stringer etc have huge impact on games. Having players that can play quality minutes into multiple spots is a huge appeal.

He's got some great attributes, big body, explosive, contested player with good ball use. I don't see him as boom or bust prospect either, can't think of any recent examples where a player with those attributes hasn't translate to some degree. If he doesn't develop the tank required to gain midfield rotation, we've slighlty over spent on a very dangerous HFF who didn't live up to his midfield potential.

Any chance we will recruit:
- Cassidy Parish? (To get Darcy?)
- Dale Cox? (Cedrick's cousin?)
- Thomas Berry (Jarrod's bro?)

The thing that has got me on the Rayner wagon, at the moment is his hunger for the contest. The same look that Hippy gets - just wants it more than the rest.

Rayner hasn't really shown he can rotate through the midfield.

I do have my reservations about Rayner at the AFL level. I think he plays as a general forward.

Hasn't he? I think he has in the games I've seen. Did you see some of his clearances in the game against Vic Country? They were a spitting image of Dusty bursting out of the middle on the MCG. Plus he's apparently played in the midfield in school footy and played well. Not sure anyone on here has seen those games but I think some posters on the D&T board have? Or maybe it was someone like Twomey. I read reports of his school games from somewhere:D

When it comes to Rayner I think there are some genuine doubts regarding him transitioning into the midfield at AFL level, the main one being his endurance levels, however, I think it could potentially be dangerous to pass him up due to his ability in the forward line alone. I think he could become one of the best forwards in the game. Yes we need young midfielders, I think we can all agree that is our primary concern, however, I think we still need to add some scoring power. Outside of Hipwood who do we have who is capable of kicking a bag? We are hopeful on Schache but we don't have much else. Rayner would give us another player who is capable of doing that.

Guys like Gray and Martin (when fit) can play decent minutes through the midfield. A guy like Stringer hasn't quite managed that yet. You probably wouldn't use pick 1 on a near permanent medium forward but you would for a guys who can go into the midfield and dominate for 40% game time and then be a force up forward too.

It is also worth noting that neither Martin or Gray started life in senior footy playing big midfield minutes.

What's your reservation about him ?
Is it simply his tank, you'd have to back in the professional environment to atleast get him to a stage where he can have some sort of impact through there, even if it's more Stringers level then Martins.

Yep if he turned into a permanent med-forward you'd be a little disappointed using pick 1, but as an educated gamble at draft time, I think he's worth the risk

How do we turn 1, Port pick and 17 into LDU, Cerra/Stephenson, Charlie Cameron and two extra third rounders to go with the Pies one for a matching bid on Ballenden in the 10 - 20 range?

Feel like LDU is a better fit for us. More of a pure mid which we need. We can grab Cameron who is a small forward from Adelaide as a trade. Just got a feel that Rayner is a flight risk (just a gut feel)

I feel the same. It's not just the Vic Metro factor, he just seems like one of those guys who feeds off the spotlight. Love him as a prospect and think at draft time he'll be the most appealing option but probably a better fit for a Victorian club. No issues with an out and out number one though, even if we're not taking him. Just more offers to field.

Yep, people getting Carried away with Rayner, he is in no way close to a clear no1 choice.
There's a few knocks on him which are probably overcome but it's still a risk you don't usually have to accept with the 1st pick.

We should take the best fit for what we need and someone we are confident will stay. Don't get hung up on the talent order cos it never holds true anyway. Plus I'm not convinced there will be a consensus talent order like usual

Future picks?

Don't be surprised to see Stephenson rise up to claim the number 1 mantle.

So much to like about him. Looks like Stephen Hill on the wing and Fyfe when he's up forward. You might be right. I've got no qualms about his ability to put on size either. May be rake thin now but his neck is still thick, he'll fill out.

Rocky free agency pick?

I guess that's an option. It's definitely what you'd call a step back to take a step forward. I'd really prefer to keep Rocky though. I'm probably just being greedy.

Starting to like the look of Nick Coffield, could be the riser later in the year ah la Clayton Oliver, 190cm 83kg defender/mid who uses the ball well.

Certainly was noticeable in the loss to the Allies. Wonder if he knows Berry and Clugga?

Can't believe O'Brien isn't talked about as a top 3 prospect. The kid is a weapon

Reckon there's a few guys ahead of him but he can look awesome when he turns it on. If we do just stick with the Port pick him or Higgins would be the guy I'd hope we took.
