LDU, De Koneing (sp), Hunter Clark, Luksious (sp), Ling and another Vic player with an Italian surname were a couple IIRC.

Good to hear.

Very strange AA.

I have for a while thought we need X-factor, speed and elite decision makers, this was shown up in dramatic fashion v the Cats tonight. Posted this on the game day thread.

In the draft I would be going for if available-
Cameron Rayner- X-factor.
Lochie O'Brien- speed, acceleration.
Nick Coffield- elite kick.

And how do we acquire Ballenden and Cameron then?

We did get smashed in contested possessions 158-116 as well. It would have been good to have been closer but Danger dominated.

Decision making is one thing but we need players working hard to get in the right areas so there can be a good decision and not just all bad ones. We see that from kick ins.

I was thinking about this a lot during last nights game as well.

The thing that stood out to me was we were being smashed at centre bounces by bigger, stronger opponents. It didn't help that both Rocky and Beams were playing with one shoulder/arm each. We really needed another contested mid other than Berry and Mathieson (who should have had much more ground time).

And we needed some one other than Witherden able to provide quality rebound and elite kicking out of the back six.

So for me, I was sitting there thinking we could really have done with LDU and Coffield in last nights team.

As much as we'd like to, we can't cover every need in one draft.

I've been debating with myself who we should consider with pick one; LDU or Rayner.

I do not see Rayner playing meaningful minutes through the midfield in at least his first two seasons. He would certainly provide another target up forward, but we need to sort out our delivery in to the forward 50 first.

I'm happy to wait until 2018 to draft our speed and X factor. Though I understand it's not likely we finish bottom, or possibly even low enough to have a shot at Rankine.

Yep, good teams regularly seem to explode out of the center bounce against us, IIRC we go alright stats wise for wins out of the center but ours are more hindered and certainly less explosive.

I would have no problem if those in the know decided to go with LDU, I just think Rayner has so much upside and X-factor we could regret passing on him. I am not too concerned re the quick fix for 2018, looking more at 2019-20 when we will hopefully be pushing for top 4. If we go with LDU at pick 1 Rayner would obviously go before our next pick so I would seriously consider Jayden Stephenson at our next if available to provide that X-factor/speed to our team, if he's gone Coffield or O'Brien.

I think that Cedric Cox could provide some good disposal out of the back half, and from the vision I have seen of the NEAFL Mitchell Hinge as well.

We won the centre clearances where we have the bigger, experienced players so I'm presuming the contested possession count gets right away from us in other parts of the ground where we basically have kids (pretty much everywhere else :D)

It'd be good to somehow get a breakdown

Great points here. Being beaten around the ball has been evident for years and our midfield depth, eventhough it growing, is concerning. Currently we are very reliant on Beams, Rockliff and Zorko and our younger brigade in Berry, Beast, McCluggage and Keays (who I think will be quite serviceable) shows that this is our area of greatest need. LDU would be a great addition to this mix. It would be great if were able to get another mid with one of early picks like an O'Brien or even possibly Stephenson but I'm really liking Coffield and his kicking ability out of the back half. Pair him up with Witherden and Mayes to an extent and we will be able to start to be able to kick our way out of the defensive fifty. A lot of today's scoring starts from defensive drives.

I like peoples optimism but I do see us again around the bottom part of the ladder next year and would be right in the mix for Rankine. One factor that really hasn't been taken into account is that Vic Metro really didn't have any under age players bar the King twins so it'll be interesting to see what they can produce and also to see what Vic C can also add.

I don't believe we'll be the worst team in 2018. I can see us finishing 15th or 16th, thus probably missing out on Rankine. Really hope Lukosius and one of the King twins have big top age years and the team/s picking at the top the draft chase KPP's.

I don't believe we'll be pushing for the top four in 2019-2021. I believe we are 4 or 5 years away from being in such a position and contending. So we need to continue drafting mids, half backs and half forwards. And then by the time we're looking at the top four, we'll need to start drafting KPP's again.

Things can turn very quickly sometimes briz, I hope you are wrong on the bolded, 2022 seems a bloody long way off.

Not easy to predict who will be in the mix for the Port pick. First of all, where does the pick land, anywhere from pick 10 to pick 14. We would need O'Brien or Stephenson to slide to have a shot at them. I can see Coffield and Dow climbing in to the top 10. We should have two draft lists, a top 25 based purely on talent, and a top 20 Brisbane Lions centric list.

Really hard to project how this years draft, particularly the first round and top 10 is shaping up. Western Jets are nailed to the bottom of the TAC cup ladder, so it's unlikely Rayner or L. Fogarty will feature in the post season. Bendigo is down the bottom as well, so unlikely to see Brander and O'Brien, and Eastern currently sit in 8th spot, so Stephenson, Cerra, Hayes and Garner could miss out.

Private school footy has really negatively impacted the TAC cup, and almost half of the projected first round talents, many of them big names, might not be playing finals.

Always good to look at the AFL U18 Academy to get a feel for how a future draft is happing up. In terms of numbers, S.A. dominate next years academy class. There are still 4 spots to fill at the end of this season.

I am looking at it in terms of, we're not likely to reach that point until our core midfielder group based around Berry, McCluggage and Witherden are about 25 years old.

It's the midfield group, plus the half backs and half forwards that drive a championships team. Of course the team needs keys backs and key forwards, but it's the engine room and wing players that win the ball and set up everything.

If we take this point, and I'm not disagreeing with you, this further shows why the club will be focusing so much on the draft for a number of years. All of the senior core will be gone and that includes the likes of Lester, Walker and Christensen who will be 30, 30 and 31 at that time. This isn't something I am concerned about as it really does highlight the fact that our current spine will really be in their prime also. However, this relates back to Rockliff and how the club will be treating the current contract situation. It's been highlighted that they might be happy for another high draft pick. In the long term this might be more beneficial for the club and means that we would most probably be adding Rayner, LDU and another one or two to add to that midfield mix. I'm certain these are the types of conversations that the club will be having.
