Can't believe people aren't getting around the hype of this kid. And this whole thing abiut him 'definitely not wanting to leave victoria' is just garbage. Back Noble and Fagan and our exciting young team to keep him there. Could be a 'franchise player', you don't pass up on players like this

That's just it though, hype. So many consensus #1's have not lived up to the hype. I remember all the hype around David Swallow and others. Borderline supermen they were. Able to leap tall defenders in a single bound

Does anyone know if there are any nice pairings for the top few prospects ie. the Berry/Clug scenario? Would love if we can pick up a couple of underwear sharing besties again

Paddy Dow and Lochie O'Brien play at the Bendigo Pioneers together.

Is O'Brien an outside mid because that's where teams need him to play or does he genuinely struggle closer to the contest?

His contested possession stats are a black mark given current trends in recruitment but his attributes are very enticing. Be nice to see if he can win a bit more of his own footy and round out his game.

Personally, not a massive O'Brien fan. Not in my top 10-12 as it stands. Does struggle close to the contest. Actively avoids them for mine. I've got him ranked between 15 and 20.

Im liking Dow as our first pick, i think he offers a lot. Ive also become a bit of a fan of Jack Higgins, everything ive read n seen of him leads me to believe he would be a great fit at the club.

Yeah I'd love Higgins with the Port pick. He kicked 7 goals over the weekend. Not sure he'll be available at the Port pick though.

If that's the case, then he'll slide. Clubs seem to be actively avoiding blokes who don't win their own footy. There have been a few guys in recent years whose final draft position is a lot lower than their stats would suggest and it is totally due to the uncontested way they play. Be interesting to see what happens with O'Brien.

Agree that his contested work is down this season but his left foot is deadly. He also has elite running ability and if he was there at our Port pick would be more than happy to welcome him to the Lions. Understandably our contested work is of more pressing needs but our ability to transition the ball from our backline to our toward line needs looking at as well. With his footskills it would hopefully assist reduce our turnovers.

O'Brien probably has a lot more scope and upside to most of those players to come through given his injuries and somewhat late birthday. He is very talented though. Elite kicking, speed and endurance. Knee injury has held him back still hasn't exactly came on as expected after his all stars game last year where he picked up 20 disposals and 2 goals off the wing.

His endeavor inside the contest can be worked on and fixed as long as he applies himself correctly and has the right people guiding him. Still, I have a vendetta on juniors who seem to avoid the contest.

Would be somewhat surprised to see him go top 15 and very surprised to see him go top 10.

In regards to our pick 1 what it allows us to do is to pick the player we want. If it is Dow or Rayner or whoever then so be it.

Just a question for the draft watchers which is hypothetical at this stage but I refer back to what a couple of posters were saying the other day about these types of deals:
Pick 1 for saints pick 7 & 8.
Pick 14(ish) + 18 for pies pick 6.

Would the talent around that 6-8 mark of the draft not be worth it to give up the number 1 pick for or is the top 3-4 guys of this draft so much better than the rest?

Andrew Gaff went pick 4. Did not have a contested possession in his first 3 seasons.

So other than the supposed flight risk that is Rayner - with his skill set I thought there would be more love for him. I am no draft expert but not sure why most are all Dow rather than Rayner.

I think we have to go who will be the best and if that is Rayner then I hope we pick him.
