Andrew Gaff went pick 4. Did not have a contested possession in his first 3 seasons.

Exposed junior form was a lot better than O'Briens. Gaff's a very overrated player at senior level that offers no defensive pressure and doesn't do enough offensively to compensate his lack of a defensive game. Simple link up player who looks better than he is due to the game plan that is in place.

Just a question for the draft watchers which is hypothetical at this stage but I refer back to what a couple of posters were saying the other day about these types of deals:
Pick 1 for saints pick 7 & 8.
Pick 14(ish) + 18 for pies pick 6.

Would the talent around that 6-8 mark of the draft not be worth it to give up the number 1 pick for or is the top 3-4 guys of this draft so much better than the rest?

I think the saints deal is a possibility provided they want Rayner or Dow or someone that badly

I'm not sure pies get rid or 6 for 14 & 18. I wouldn't do that deal. Plus they don't even know what to do with draft picks why would they want more ;)

Personally I would trade with the saints I'd rather have 2 top 10 players than 1 #1 in an even field of mids

How did Kelly and Whitfield go as juniors with their contested work? I feel like both justify their draft positions as pure outside players, but they're in the absolute elite of outside mids. You probably wouldn't get players of that quality out of juniors with low contested numbers very often. Obviously Kelly's developed a great all-round game now, but he was already close to the best outside mid in the game before that transformation.

Was at the Oakleigh Chargers v Bendigo Pioneers game yesterday. Only the second time I have seen O'Brien live. Quite impressed given he is playing in a very ordinary Pioneers side. He has an inside game which I think can be developed at senior level but definitely does his best work on the outside. His disposal is clean and precise and he has good pace.
Brander played up forward for the Pioneers. Looked very disinterested and uncompetitive on the rare occasions that the ball went into the Bendigo forward line.
I am and always have been a Jack Higgins fan. Probably should have had 8 goals but Toby Wooller refused to pop the ball over to him when was standing 25 metres on his own in the goal square. Played the entire game up forward. Is not the fast dynamic small forward most teams are after; more an opportunist but has an instinct around the goals, can take an overhead mark (despite suggestions to the contrary) and is a very accurate set shot. He lacks pace which is his biggest knock but the club that drafts him will get a real workhorse. He would present no go home risk. The kid is desperate to succeed.

Right now if I could have a draft of Dow, Worpel, Ballenden and Payne plus maybe Sambono as a rookie I would happily take it.

I have disagreed with a lot of posts on here previously but I think this tops it. I must watch a different game to you.

Gaff is an absolute gun. Yes he gets little contested ball. However he is one of the best runners in the game, great kick, finds space like no other player, runs both defensively and offensively. Plays the wing position perfectly. Would love him at the lions and would give up pick 14 in a heartbeat.

Yes he is not going to fix our glaring centre clearance issues, but you are underestimating how good he is especially on big grounds.

Cameron or McKenna at those picks. Hell no. Gaff everyday of the week.

So other than the supposed flight risk that is Rayner - with his skill set I thought there would be more love for him. I am no draft expert but not sure why most are all Dow rather than Rayner.

I think we have to go who will be the best and if that is Rayner then I hope we pick him.

I think the big question mark on Rayner (besides go-home factor) is his tank. Not much of it on testing so far and it seems to be continuing to be a weakness. Take someone like Matho, the lack of endurance was the big knock on him, he's been working his butt off to overcome it but it's still a work-in-progress. You'd want to see in the combine that Rayner's actually making some progress on that measure.

I also have questions on Rayners off field behaviour. From what I have heard, that could have some impact on his fitness levels and tank. Put it this way, I wouldn't want Rayner living on the Gold Coast.

I have read a few insinuations on the draft section of BF re Rayner's "party lifestyle choices". I have supreme confidence that if we select him at 1 we will have done our research and that we have decided that he would flourish under our tutelage.

After (way) too many years on these boards, I've learnt to be very skeptical on what I read on the Drafts & Trading board. On all the boards actually. Too many people wanting to make themselves more important/connected than they are. Not saying they're wrong on this one, but there's been some beaut Chinese whispers and outright lies in the past.

Well I am in the area where Rayner is from and educate students that are friends with him... I don't want him at brisbane. Don't care about the ability. He is a cancer... parties too much and rather Class acts like McLuggage and Berry. Give me Dow or trade our pick any day of the week.

I wouldn't say Dustin Martin has been to bad on the culture at the Tigers.

There's plenty of our boys who love to party too see them out and about most weekends.

Both were a lot better than O'Brien. Neither of them seemed to avoid the contested situations either. Whereas that is one of my queries on O'Brien.

This is the draft thread. I'm not talking about whether or not I'd trade pick 14 for a known player of Andrew Gaff. I'm talking about whether I'd be picking O'Brien.

Seriously disagree on Gaff's defensive running though.

I'd draft the best kid for needs. I'd back our culture, fitness and coaching staff to increase an 18 year old's tank pretty quickly and I'd also back the club in to provide an environment in which he'll stay. The second we start jumping at shadows and letting ghosts of the past dictate our decision in the present, is the second we make further mistakes.

Well said. The character of the yoing men we draft into the club is just as important as their skills and potential. If you are correct, and i have no reason to doubt, behaviour, the go home factor and his reported small tank must make him a high risk draftee. Im happy to avoid. Lads like Dow and Higgins are what this club needs. You never know what may happen during the trade period, picks may become available to get both.

For Brisbane, l would put character on par with skill level. Starting to assemble some real top notch players (character wise) e.g. Nick Robbo, Berry, Skinner, Andrews, Hippy, Robinson, Beams, Rich maybe and probably a few others l have forgtten. Hope we do the same as the Swans and make a "No dickheads policy"

So ur ok with Ur players having ice prior to entering afl?

That is a huge accusation fitz, IMO you should not assert that in a public forum, although I am sure some (hopefully a small minority) potential draftees use drugs illegal and legal, they do not exist outside of normal societal practices.

That was a highly defamatory accusation.

Note- I am assuming you are inferring that a certain potential draftee uses ice.

I can't see us going Rayner.. just something about him and us that doesn't seem to fit together. I would rather take a punt at Dow for pick 1. I'm not overly hyped on him, but the way he plays is the type of mid we need. Id then look to back that up with another hard ball winning mid at our next pick as well. We aren't the fastest team going around, but our ball movement is fast and has improved a great deal. Where we struggle is winning the ball. We will have the likes of Taylor, Hugh, Cox, Witherden, Nrobbo providing some outside run and rebound from the back half. We are going to have a very talented tall forward line. We need the ability to win the ball and be able to bang it forward to the big guys, and even with our 'good midfield on paper' now we are horrible at this. Once the ball is up forward, i back in our ability to create turn overs through the middle and then use our quick ball movement on the turnover to cut teams up still. But we are way too reliant on this 1 strength of ours.

Give me some ball and clearances winners please!

Y? We aren't in the 80s mate. Kids are exposed to that crap at such a young age, our society is heading down the wrong path.

I don't think saying "kids taking drugs are bad" etc is a bad thing to day, but blatantly implying a 17 year old draftee takes ice is ****ed and defamation.

You missed the point.

Of course kids are messing around with things at school. They always have, sometimes with serious stuff that they should avoid.

It's another thing to post those allegations on a public forum.

Definitely.... I edited my post to 'recreational drugs' for the ppl still stuck in the 70s and 80s and think that more kids just drink under age etc

Ice is the new cocaine and is cheaper. An upgrade of speed. Seen it first hand re: other students filming other doing it.

Doesn't mean they are still doing it but Leopards don't change their spots long term..

I agree fitz but you went too far with the insinuation particularly in a public forum.

A public forum... ha ha ha this is big footy, like anyone cares or follows a public forum such as big footy a part from those bored at work, sitting on their ass at home etc.

I can just see Greg Swann ringing the police as we speak ha ha

Speaking of living in the 80s.... do you realize clubs, players, journos etc are on every clubs board? Not to mention family and friends of players.

You act like we're all stuck in the past yet you've clearly demonstrated your utter lack of understanding of Big Footy and the internet in general.
