I hope the Falcons have a deep run in the TAC cup finals. There's very little love for Worpel amongst the amateur and media draft watchers with many having Worpel rated in the late 20's or 30's on their big boards.

I'm finding myself getting just as excited for the talent we could pick up at the Port pick as our own first pick.

Must be the mental thing of Dow vs Rayner, and potentially passing on the superior talent. Whereas at the Port pick I could see us getting a decent slider, also seeing the impact of players like Berry/SPP from last year, makes it exciting.

Hate to admit it, I'm coming around to Rayner a bit at pick one.

Hope the club do their due diligence in regards to his character and go home possibilities.

Also Stephenson getting some attention over the last month since he moved in to a midfield role.

I've got Stephenson at #3. I was really hoping they'd keep him away from the midfield so he could have potentially slid to us.

I think supporters have been way too quick to dismiss him as an option.

Of the 3 oft cited concerns

1. That he can't play midfield - which remains to be seen IMO and there is a big focus on a beep test from several months ago.

2. That he is a flight risk - based on rumour and somewhat throwaway lines by a journo.

3. That there are character issues - not sure this is based on anything really.

I concede that any one of those factors would prevent us from drafting him at pick #1 but I think he could actually tick those boxes and be right in the mix. I reckon he is one good (or even average ) endurance test result from zooming right back into the popular vote for pick 1.

I would be very much against taking Higgins at pick 1.

Higgins quite school at the beginning of the year to focus on footy to get drafted. When he's not been training, he's been doing an internship at AFL house in the umpires department. He's basically trained and lived the life of a proffessional this year. That's a credit to the kid. But you also have to question how much improvement does Higgins have in his game compared to the kids who have been juggling school and footy and are yet to enter a professional environment.
I see your point. Although i see it as an advantage, already living and training as a professional. And how is juggling school n footy any different to juggling work n footy. Just shows the work ethic this kid has. Any future development surely comes down to the quality of the coaches and club culture. I see him as a talented sponge ready to learn and grow and an asset to our culture. Regarding his speed, there have been many great players quicker between the ears than on their feet, simon black for example. Any good sprint coaching will add a yard or two. I get that dow is a better fit for our first pick but if higgins is available at our second we should snap him up.

Dow's injury might limit how much he can bulk up over his first pre-season.

He has been working with a sprint coach this year.

Is indeed. I wouldn't hesitate taking him at #14.

I know you're very keen on Worpel and rate him a lot higher then most, just wondering who else you'd view as a potential "slider" that you'd be happy selecting ahead of Worpel.

The two players I'd be interested in hearing some of your thoughts are Constable and Darcy Fogarty (they may fall under the above)

I think LDU is a big chance to slide a bit, probably doesn't miss out on the top 10 though.

Fogarty hasn't played all that well when on the park this year but has also had injury problems to deal with. Strongly built, good user and a strong mark. Pretty similar to someone like Stringer in terms of style and size. Not to mention the inconsistency. He is a real risk/reward for mine.

Constable, I like. He had a strong champs for Vic Metro winning plenty of the ball and dishing it out to their play makers. Smart player who makes good decisions under pressure and is a reliable kick for an inside midfield type. The knock on him is his pace but it's not a major concern of mine due to his smarts. Similar to our own Ryan Lester in that he always does the team thing and push to the right positions. Higher ceiling than Lester though.

Cheers mate, LDU has a very Will Brodie vibe about him IMO, which could see a similar slide. Those teams holding the mid first rounders (Stkilda, Bulldogs and Melbourne) do seem well stocked for his type, however I couldn't see him going any further then the Essendon / West Coast likely picks.

Constable I've been reading about on the Carlton board, has a few big fans over there. Reads as a very solid citizen type, as you described. Could be another really good, big bodied, workman like midfielder to go with side Berry.

Fogarty is someone that really interest me, I've seen a few Phantom having him around that pick 10 mark (hard to gauge after missing such a large part of his u/18 year) Would love to add another decent scoring threat forward, especially in the 3rd tall role that can have a quick burst through the middle.

If we were to select him Dow, following up with Fogarty could be a great outcome.

For mine adding grunt to the centre square and size & X-factor to the half forward line would be a nice addition with our first two picks. at #1 either Rayner or Dow and then at 14 either trade it for Kennedy (GWS) or draft Darcy Fogarty (only if we go with Dow at #1).

Might go a buy a lotto ticket now :)

Fogarty's 179 cm. (Higgins is 178; Charlie Cameron 181, Toby Greene 182) More a small forward than a 3rd tall, isn't he? Not saying he wouldn't be a good get. Anyway, sorry to nitpick. Obviously, I need to get a life!

He is referring to Darcy Fogarty.

Darcy Fogarty from SA, not Lachlan.

Fogarty is an interesting case. As a 17 year old I said he could have bene playing AFL footy already but has since not come on as expected and whether thats fully from injury or not is yet to be seen. He had a 4 disposal game IIRC which is a really really poor effort. He was fit enough to play for SA in the champs so his injury certainly wasn't bad enough for him to stop playing footy. Can't help but feel he wants to stay in SA...

Fogarty was one of the best on ground in the early academy games against VFL competition. And his early SANFL games were pretty good. Not sure when he injured his knee, but reports are he played with a small tear in the meniscus through the U18 champs.

The thing with this season, apart from Higgins, none of the other top prospects have produced week in and week out. Players have had one off big games, or produced a consistent month without a dominant performance.

Where as a lot of last years crop produced week after week. McCluggage was consistent week to week, McGrath was good to brilliant, once Ainsworth came back from injury and suspension he produced and moved in to the midfield late in the year and had some very big games, Brodie started the year very well, but tired towards the end, while the Sandringham boys had a very good second half of the season, and had a massive finals series.

I'm pretty sure I noticed strapping on his knee on a glenelg game I went to may 27th or SANFL round 7
