I hear that Rayner has conclusively said he'd be open to playing interstate. With that in mind, I think the club should go for him as he's the best talent overall. So what if he spends some time up forward? If he's potentially a bigger game changer than the rest, I want him regardless of need.

Josh Schache says hi.

It's been rehashed multiple times in this thread. There have been rumours, since the U18 championships, that Rayner has little interest in leaving Victoria, despite what he said in an interview at the AFL combine.

So it's entirely speculation and hearsay based on nothing and the total opposite of the players' own actual words. Got it. At least the Vic Metro argument had some reasoning and serious thought to it. This doesn't.

But Rayner says he's fine with playing anywhere. There's no way he'd be fibbing and then ask to be traded to a specific Vic club in two years. no way

I could say the same for any player who isn't a Queenslander, including everyone being discussed for our first pick. What makes Rayner any different to the rest?

What associates the Go Home 5 with Rayner specifically and not with LDU, Stephenson, Dow and Brayshaw? I don't hear the Go Home factor being raised as a big concern for the rest of them.
Then was some speculation about LDU being a flight risk due to a interview he gave to a newspaper back in 2015.

Nothing I am going to say will change your mind. The "rumours" come from credible sources. If specifics start being mentioned, then it's easy for the sources to identify who the rumours started with. There are people who talk to the kids all the time before and after games. These people have careers that require a trust relationship with the kids. Break that trust, and kids in the future won't talk to these people.

It's like the Rocky rumours from last season. There were people in the know, but they wouldn't talk specifics to protect their sources. But they would say, "well there's some pretty sh!t stuff that has gone on that reflects pretty poorly on Rockliff".

There were rumours on here that Schache's parents were moving to Brisbane too. Doesn't look very accurate now. Do the people posting here evaluate the credibility of their sources on an ongoing basis? I have no doubt that you are correct and at least some of them get it from the horse's mouth. But it's easy to make up some garbage and subtly hint at that too.

In any case, hopefully the club do their homework and pick a player they think will be committed.

I think you'll find those ones were somewhat tongue in cheek at the time they were posted. There was a time where they had seriously been considering it though.

It is not an exact science..... mixture of due diligence.... experience .... guesswork, luck n hope. Two years time we find out if we chose well. No one on here knows better as life is a continually changing beast. Good luck to the big Conole. I hope you choose better than Aish lol and as good as squizzy.

I wouldn't say surprised. More likely some people will express some concern in regards to possible go home factor, and whether we should have picked for team needs and fit.

Nah, we will just re-sign him on a 2 year contract half way through his 2nd year on a proviso, that he'll be able to return to Victoria via trade during the trade period should a suitable trade, for all party's, be found...I call it the "Schache attack"

Now your trying to create a diversion. You talked about Rayner, I responded about Rayner. There has been plenty of speculation about Rayner as a flight risk and whether he'd fit in to the culture the club is trying to build. Nobody mentioned LDU, Dow, Stephenson.

Maths - Probability to be more specific

Edit - replied to wrong post. What i am refering to is that regardless of the details or reasons, at the end of the day an exceptionaly high percentage of our top draft picks leave.

Read that there was a small possibility of the us looking to move up into the top 10 with a possibility of it being done with one of the Saints picks. Quite happy about that as yhete usually is a player that slides on draft night. Keep one and have another top ten pick, possible trade for Cameron and have enough points for Ballenden and Payne.

Now that's just not true. In my first two posts I definitely talked about comparing Rayner to alternative options at #1, both in talent level and in Go Home factor.

If he's potentially a bigger game changer than the rest , I want him regardless of need.

Am I right to say that the people concerned about Rayner's Go Home factor think it's bigger because he's Vic Metro?

When I say something is bigger, that means it's in comparison to something else, in this case between Rayner and the other options for #1, who are all country boys except Brayshaw. After all, if Rayner comes to us it will be at the expense of us possibly drafting one of them, and vice versa. It's a direct choice between options.

And even if I hadn't, so what? I thought we were capable of discussing more than one issue at one time.

Hey guys, sorry for the intrusion but I was just wondering if Richmond put a bid on for Ballenden at Pick 17 do you believe that the Lions would still match that?

Not sure. Cal Twomey has been out the last week saying that a bid won't come before our pick 18/19, but you never know.

Effectively, if there is a bid at 17, it'd be pretty easy for the club to do an analysis of who is at the top of our boards. It may be someone like a Lochie O'Brien (purely as an example), in which case the club would simply be able to decide whether they want O'Brien or Ballenden (given we would likely also have the pick following, that may depend on what we've heard about who Richmond are into, as we may gamble for both).

All the noises from the club is that they are planning for Ballenden to be on our list, but tough to know just how highly they rate him. If there's a big slider on the night that the club prefer, and it comes down to one or the other...

If we trade Schache then I don't think there is any chance we will pass on Ballenden. I expect our trading strategy will be to get enough picks prior to a likely bid on Ballenden that we will have already have our preferred mids locked away.

I'm hearing Collingwood are right into Ballenden apparently. Would be a huge ask to match at pick 6...
Where are you hearing/reading that?

Welcome. Be respectful, and opposition fans are always welcome, even if the topic is a little touchy for Lions fans. (Not that this particularly topic is one).

Question back to you, would Richmond match a bid made at pick 12 for Patrick Naish?
