I have enough of the "Go with Vic Country instead of Vic Metro" talk. Firstly, Josh Schache was from country victoria. Secondly, his father played with Bears. Thirdly, he wanted to come to the Lions. Lastly, left us for the western bulldogs for pick 25 & 40. We go screwed anyway. Just saying. :thumbsdownemoji:
Well it's not just country for country's sake. It's part of it. But I've heard recruiters say that country kids are more mature based on what they're forced to go through to play footy & general extra responsibility living in country

So it's still the person you recruit but the country kids are prob 2 years ahead of the city kids when it comes to preparedness to live away from home. And given we may only have 2 years for them to settle this can be an important factor.

Scache obviously an exception, there will be immature country kids & mature city kids but on average country are better prepared to come up to Bris.

It's not just us, i think port have been going country for a while and have had decent success in retention. Crows draft talent ahead of the person & they have had a few issues over the years. There's definitely something to it

Ok this is my last whinge about the trade period. The thing that really pisses me off is the fact that clubs around us (Carlton and Freo) really strengthened their draft position in this draft and even the Suns were able to strengthen their draft position in next years draft. I am glad that CC has come but if we waited one year we wouldn't have paid such a high price and 12/18/20/Schache could have been used to really push up. Two top 10 picks would have been awesome and this is evident when you look at what Freo/Saints/Carlton will be able to bring in with their top ten picks.
Yeah but We killed last year's draft. We want to add a few more now so we get development in not postpone it another year. I reckon next year, assuming this draft wasn't a complete bust, we will prob look to add more ready to go players & maybe trade for an experienced player as we might get more of a look in at trade if more teams want to go to the draft.

Premiership teams are built through the draft and you trade for need. Even Noble has come out and said the same thing as well as Brownie. Not saying that won't possibly bring in those types with 15 and 18 but to add to your statement if we had been able to bring in our pick 1 and another highly rated mid in the top 10 it would add have added to our crop from last year.

You’re assuming it was possible to trade into the top ten. Not in other club’s interest to give up their top ten picks. I think we would have done it if possible. Last year we traded down from 2 to 3, but the extra pick we got wasn’t in top ten but 16 from memory. Each year is different and this year given depth of draft, there were no pick swaps into top ten.

We were looking for offers for pick 1, nothing came. North and Saints were also looking to improve draft position and didnt. Im sure it just wasnt posible to do.

Coming off a good draft last year, if we can get an elite mid at 1, and another 200 game best 22 quality guys at 15 and 18 we are nearly set.

None of the teams you mentioned moved up the order solely by trading picks this year - Freo lost weller, Carlton lost Gibbs, and St Kilda did the pick swap last year with Hawthorn. For Gold Coast to get the WCE first next year they had to give up 4 second round picks! I get that they probably don't like the draft this year but you can't tell me that 4 second rounders are worth the 2018 WCE first, which I think at best is around pick 10.

I'm sure we would have loved to move up the order, but I don't think anyone in the top 10 would have given up a pick for 18 +20 - clubs pretty clearly think there is a drop off in talent after the first dozen.

My concerns with Rayner are nothing to do with the 'go home' factor but more to do with his professionalism or lack thereof. Here is a kid who has been in the very best training programs that the country can provide and the lack of improvement in his endurance is a massive concern. Rumours are also that he likes to party and don't get me wrong I remember enjoying myself as a 17/18 yr old as well. There was also a comment about the skin folds at the draft combine being quite high for this crop of draftees, he doesn't look trim. It was also commented in one of his school games that he absolutely squibbed it and a number of recruiters were there and weren't impressed. His football ability is obvious however the standards required for AFL are an absolute jump in standards that are required. Look at Aaron Francis who has struggled to grasp the professionalism required. Clubs do their absolute due diligence and track these kids for 2/3 yrs prior to their draft year especially those up the pointy end and think that this will be the difference with who we take. There has been no 'noise' about Dow and the only knock on LDU is that he likes to surf.

That is a big pro in favour of LDU - would love the GC.

Sometimes you get lucky like we did last year getting pick 16 for nothing. This year Fremantle got lucky - pick 2 for Weller was extremely fortunate and won't happen again

Noticed Fremantle fans mentioning no Vic metro but not sure if it's a club thing

Warming up to Rayner a bit. Still have issues with some rumours surrounding partying too much but if NobFag get him then he must be alright. Not sure l want LDU, looks very relaxed and l have question marks if he has enough mongrel to get the best out of himself and push himself. I like Dow tho. Hopefully 1 of Dow or Rayner

I like the fact he likes a party. Suggests he is social, confident and can find a good time, which means he may not lay around the house looking at the ceiling pondering how long he has before he can get home again. If his comparisons are with Dusty, I would think it’s part of his training anyway. (Plus the kid can play) Get him in!

And then let’s get Rankine next year. Holy s$$t that kid is going to tear it up!! Imagine him, Rayner, Clug, Berry, Witho, Hippy, Harris, Mcstay ect.. Tank away Lions, I’ll take one more year of pain to see that combo out there.

Yeah l wouldn't take that. I would rather be out of the bottom 4 than take Rankine and be bottom of the ladder. While l do like Rayner, would prefer a full time mid in Dow. While Rankine looks good now, plenty can happen next year and l assume he is more of a HFF than a full time mid. Don't know if we would want 2 forwards in Rayner and Rankine when we are trying to get mids.

Think Rayner will play majority mid long term, again Dusty comparisons and those sort of fwd/mid ratios. Clearance and contested ball winner ultimately.

Actually I would think Rankine would end up outside mid too. Elusive and quick and beautiful disposal to link up or finish off.

And yeah the tank thing was not legit. Rather finish with a few wins and then Rankine slides to us anyway!!!!

Settled on Dow as well. Seems to be exactly what we need. LDU may be a laid back coaster like Rich
