The first 2 yr contract are games based contracts with a base. Which is set by the draft position.
I cant see why that can not be extended through to the 3rd And 4th years still with a base salary set from draft position and games bonuses. (just at higher rates then their first 2 years).
It also means the blokes are much more likely to hang around at the lower positioned clubs when they are more likely to get games. And therefore more money.
No issues with that as its non negotiable. That’s what I mean by having set mechanisms. That’s completely different to leaving to clubs and players to work out but still trying to have an enforceable contract for the outer years.

But it does take away from the relative freedom of contract that players currently enjoy in their third year which means getting the AFLPA on board. And that will mean giving them something back, like no compensation for free agency or unrestricted free agency at 8 years.

My personal view is that the league missed a trick when they agreed to free agency in the first place. That was when things like longer draft contracts could have been negotiated.

I would love any mechanism in calculating contracts in such circumstances to have some significant weighting for senior games played for draftees. Could really go a long way to helping keep those kids on developing lists if their prospects for earning cash in their first four years or so is potentially a lot more lucrative due to the increased opportunities kids get for senior footy on rebuilding lists.
Yep.

What is clear is that the salary cap doesn’t act as a true equalisation mechanism. Theoretically, clubs with fewer good players have the money to attract and retain new and emerging talent. In practice, players want to: (a) win flags; and (b) maximise their earning potential outside footy by playing for a “big club”. That makes the salary cap less effective than we’d like.

Really cant see other teams allowing us extra picks in the draft. Reckon we will be luck to get 15 but almost certaily 18 will be gone with the bid

You reckon Eagles and Swans are going to bid on Ballanden rather than who they want, just to spite us? Or any team? Gimme a break.

Just as an aside, we have pick 1, 15 & 18, but the way it has turned out we have far from the best hand. Freo have 2 & 5. Carlton have 3 & 10.

I'd certainly take 1, 15, Ballenden over Carlton's 3 & 10 (and then 30) every day of the week.
Freo's 2 & 5, but their next pick is 42. While their first 2 picks may well be better than our first 2, our first 3 players (should) be better on average than their first 3.

Considering the club obviously feels Balla will not go in the top 3 picks, I would go for 2 dips at the top end any day. Would trade either hand.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, trading pick 1 for 7 and 8 from the Saints would have been ideal, a lot of BF and MSM phantom drafters have the Saints getting 2 of Cerra, Brayshaw, Stephenson, Coffield and Bonar, if they end up with 2 of those they would certainly have trumped us with 1 of Dow, LDU or Rayner IMO.

These top 10 all seem so magical now but look back in a few years..every draft has produced 3 or 4 disappointments from the top 10..why would this be different because it's 'even' ?

So what's stopping our Pick 1 being one of these 3 or 4? Nothing. So just as likely as having a bust as the Sainters, except they get two cracks at it.

Not sure why you're worried about the Saints... Given most of the top draftees are from Victoria, the likely hood of another draft bust/go homer is extremely likely for us here.

At the very end of trade week I was gutted that we didn’t move up or use 1 for Saints 7/8 but at the end of the day I’ve always felt that it has to be looked at as a collective of who we draft on the night. We were spoilt last year and we only know this because of what last years crop showed this year and as Lace Out said there are always some misses, just hope it’s someone else and not us.

OK. I see it now

The source ,is within the club, and the information came during the course of the interviews. The discussion was based on the fact that it was an extremely difficult decision, as none of the top 5 or 6,ticked all the boxes we are prioritising. Not saying Dow won't get the nod ,rather that its a moveable feast at present, and the situation is dynamic. It was a bit easierl last year ,but take McGrath and McLuggage out,and it would probably be similar. Its so much harder for us with the go home factor, and the Victorian vultures cruising around our young talent.Hope that is helpful.Ihave no idea who they'll choose, but as long as Ballenden is after 18 , think we'll all be pleased...and relieved.

3 top picks before Ballendon and we have to be happy with that. If they leave in 2 years well then thats a problem to deal with then. But a bit of success next year and maybe things start to turn first round player retention wise.

"Gimme a break?" ... settle down
Why would they give a team a free player to choose from when they know we will bid. WCE and Sydney both have picks in the 2nd round and wouldn't put it past Adelaide and richmond bidding even tho we have traded with them. Certainly not out of the realms of possibility of it happeneing at 15 or 18. They know we will accept a bid just like Hippy last year so they might force us to bid so they can get a better chance of player at their round

I can confirm the club has had serious discussions with Jack Petruccelle. Don't know a lot about him but he was a very good junior basketball who choose AFL. Has made a few top 25 Phantom Drafts. The word is he is a Carlton supporter and would prefer to play for them but they have indicated thats unlikely. Any of you draft gurus know much about the kid?

Fast, very fast. Most suited to HBF. Haven’t quite seen the line breaking but I reckon that could come. Kicking is a little suspect but as you said comes from a basketball background so even though he has some deficiencies in his game these would be sorted out. Personally, I thought he would be one that would be on our radar at 18 and for all those JJ and Saad fans this could be the clubs opportunity to draft a similar type.

Paraphrasing from the likes of Bishop and Matt Balmer; fastest player in the draft, doesn't have the kicking skills of the players like O'Brien and Ling, but does have a better contested game than the pure outside mids. Is not afraid to mix it up in the contest.

with our list getting better and being able to imagine our future finals team I would prefer our salary cap spent on one A plus player than two A minuses

Now that we have no depth in the forward big man ranks, could Todd Elton be a lifeline option for us with late pick in draft or delisted free agent. If walker or Hipwood go down we have nothing in reserve. I know we will have Ballendon but I'll be surprised if he plays 10 games in his first year. He looks very promising but will take time.
