VERSATILE prospect Nathan Murphy's ascent up the draft board could continue, with the Victorian teenager in the mix to be a top-15 selection.
Murphy started the season weighing up whether to follow a promising cricket career or go down the football pathway, but his decision to stick with the Sherrin looks set to pay dividends at the NAB AFL Draft on November 24.
Clubs are excited by his potential at both ends of the ground, having shown good poise with the ball as a half-forward and half-back.
He came to the attention of recruiters with plenty of goals at school level for Brighton Grammar before then progressing to feature in the Sandringham Dragons' push to the TAC Cup Grand Final. He was used in defence at times for the Dragons.
Collingwood has been linked to Murphy, but with its first pick coming at No.6 it could be a slight stretch for the 17-year-old. He appears more likely to fit into the second half of the first round.
Murphy, 188cm, decided in July to focus on footy despite having represented Victoria in cricket at under-15s, 17s and 19s level and also play in the Australian under-17s side.
His Sandringham Dragons teammate Andrew Brayshaw won't last as long. Fremantle, North Melbourne, Collingwood and St Kilda have all been linked to the midfielder with their top-10 picks after his brilliant end to the season.
Brayshaw, the younger brother of Melbourne's Angus, has strong family ties in Perth and also to the Kangaroos, where his uncle James was formerly the chairman.
The 17-year-old finished the season averaging 25 disposals for the Dragons at TAC Cup level, and then blitzed at the NAB AFL Draft Combine to have the most impressive set of testing from any prospect.
Cameron Rayner, Luke Davies-Uniacke and Paddy Dow are seen by clubs as being the most likely players to fill the top three selections, but the order of players continues to be debated.
Carlton continues to be seen as a strong chance to take Dow if the Lions don't grab him at No.1, but South Australian forward Darcy Fogarty has also been mentioned as a possible pick for the Blues.
Fogarty started the season as a contender for the No.1 choice but struggled for form across the year. If the Blues overlook him at No.3, which is considered most likely, there is the genuine prospect that he is available at their second pick – No.10.
The draft position of Victorian ruckman Sam Hayes will be one of the most interesting aspects when names are called later this month.
Despite being a back-to-back All Australian, it is unlikely Hayes will find a spot in the top 10 on draft night, with clubs reluctant to use early picks on ruckmen.
Tim English was drafted with pick No.19 last year despite being an extremely talented ruckman, and a similar draft position looms for Hayes. Richmond could look at Hayes with one of its first three picks – No.17, 20 and 25 – but he is not a guarantee to fit in the first round.

I like hearing about these non-mids pushing up the rankings. It is unlikely to happen but if all of D. Fogarty, Murphy, Allen, Naughton, Brander and maybe Hayes go before our second pick we might just be able to pick up two decent midfield prospects with 15 and 18.

I think Constable looks like the one sliding. IMO ideal to fill our clearance needs. Maybe at 15.
Lachie Fogarty would be a good pick at 18.
Slightly undersized inside/outside mid, who as mentioned, can go forward and kick a goal.
Had a good start to the season in the two Academy games, and early TAC cup games for Western Jets.
Cam Rayner/LDU plus L Fogarty plus who ever at pick 15 would be a good early draft haul.
Clarke was going to be a very solid citizen but when I look at Payne I see Brian Lake and there are 18 clubs that want one of them.
From memory it was only a top 20 and he wasn’t in it.
Liking this talk of Constable at 15. Lack of pace doesn't mean much if you are the prime extractor... Look at Kennedy, Priddis, Crouch brothers etc.

If it does eventuate both attend Haileybury College I believe. Since hearing about the possible link to Constable I’v gone back and read/watched and his hands are great (one touch/soft) and makes great decisions.
Not that I think he’ll be at our pick 15 but Allen is about the most mature kid I’ve listened to in any of the draft videos over the last 5yrs or so and there is also scope that he might move into the midfield.
Berry is very good with this as well when he is extracting the ball by hand. Constable and Berry would compliment each other so well and throw in who ever we pick up with pick 1 it would go a long way to solving our quality ball winning ability around the centre/stoppages.

Played the majority of the year at St Kevins in the APS system, didn't return to the Jets until mid-July. Gets in the best players every week (7 of 7) at TAC Cup Level and racks up impressive numbers.
As you have mentioned is undersized and is not overly quick, which is why he is likely to be available around this mark. That said has quick hands and if there is a better tackler in this draft I have not seen him. Tackling technique and numbers are elite.

For those asking about Jack Payne, he is a lot more developed than what Declan Watson was last year, and Brisbane fans seemed pretty keen on him for some reason. Payne can actually hold his own in one on one contests and can read the play well and be that third man up and make a spoil. Not a big intercept marker at this stage, but he does impact contests. I really like his potential honestly.

Not a huge OBrien fan but I’d be happy with him in this combination of selections. That appears to be a really good mix.
I was on the Watson bandwagon last year and have been on the Payne one since the game early last year against the Suns Academy.
We could use a true full back and Payne has the potential to be that. He has excellent power and his marking is good. Skills are solid although he can take a little bit of time to get the ball away which might need some work at the next level. Speed is a question for me but it could be that I mark him down in this area more because I expect it to be an issue with his body type. What do you see as far as speed goes? When I saw him last year I thought it was okay but I have not followed as closely this year. He does seem to hold his own on leads.
As a side note for anyone interested they have kicked off the annual Phantom draft on the Draft and Trades Board.

He ran a 2.98 over 20m at the combine so his power off the mark is at the pointy end for big men. I haven't watched a lot of him outside a coyote of the streamed reserves games so I'm unsure as to whether he actually uses it. Generally speaking though, speed shouldn't be a problem.

Payne really impressed me seeing him both live and on streams. I think I've only ever seen him concede 2 goals and one was after his shoulder dislocated in the contest. I think he is worth the pick if we see the need for a kpd of his style.
Payne mostly seemed to spoil in the twos this year, and he does that very well. He didn't seem to mark the ball a lot, but I think that will come with time. I was surprised with the sprint time at the combine, because he is a solid mountain of a kid. Given that time, I think we'll take him. He played against a smaller man in the GF, Edwards, from memory and wasn't outpaced. Did give away one free kick for holding, but given we were under seige he did really well. I think we'll be able to match a bid with wherever 44 slides to, or 52. I have been dubious, but I now think he'll be a Lion come Nov 24.

Brandon tested elite for speed in the WA state combine, with results of 20-metre sprint (2.87 sec), a running vertical leap (91cm) and agility (8.08 sec).

I'm with LDU for pick 1 and will be happy of any of the next 2 with our other picks, Hunter Clark, Constable, O'Brien and Bailey
He really is exactly what our midfield needs. A quick, skilful, goal kicking, inside/outside midfielder capable of winning the contested footy/clearances but also capable of the run and carry on the outside. He is reportedly on our radar so I guess from our recruiters point of view it'll come down to whether or not they think he can transition his game from WAFL level to AFL. He is in the perfect age bracket for us aged 23 as well. Coming into the off season David Noble stated that we were looking to recruit midfielders in the 21-25 range. If we nab two, 18 year old midfielders with picks 1 and 15, a 23 year old, ready to go midfielder could almost be seen as more beneficial at pick 18 than another 18 year old. It'd help the list build/age profile balance out.
A midfield rotation of Beams, Zorko, Berry, Kelly, Christensen, Mathieson and Cameron seems to be a good mix as well. A nice mix of inside grunt with outside speed. Beams, Christensen, Berry and Mathieson shoulder the inside work load whilst Zorko, Kelly and Cameron could offer us the run and gun on the outside. Beams and Bundy are capable on the outside as well whilst Zorko/Kelly can win their own footy.
