We have 6 Senior list spots I think, but to be honest I'm not certain how the change to the rookie list side of things impacts that.

I am thinking pick 1, 15, 18, Ballenden, Payne and then 1 more pick. That fills the senior list.

We currently have 3 Cat A rookies, but to be honest I don't know what the limit is for Cat A and B
I would imagine that if we dont use the last selection in the draft then we will re-draft Claye Beams on the senior list leaving the extra spot for a rookie.
If the bids come early enough for Ballenden and Payne that wipe out the picks in the 40's And 52 then I think we will go this way.
Looks like Ballenden might be slipping a bit, but I wouldn't be surprised if a bid for Payne comes in the early to mid 40's.

I'm confused, why would we choose to leave a free rookie spot over a main list spot?

Seems more likely we'd use a list spot on a mature age recruit or a delisted FA

It's been true all year as per previous years with him the only published pundit to rate Ballenden top 15 regularly and Crossley similarly, but he appears to be hedging his bets now with Ballenden dropping all the way to 40 in his mock draft.
Nah, he just keyed in Naish, Ballenden, and then Payne at the next team picks. Didn't bother suggesting who would bid on them. Basically said 25 would be points for Naish, 40 as points for Ballenden, and 44 as points for Payne. Which is roughly what we expect. At least he didn't suggest we'd need to match with 18.

That's a weird way to do it, given we probably wouldn't have 44 after matching Ballenden as it would probably be downgraded barring a later than expected bid.

In this scenario is Claye Beams 'not' essentially a mature age recruit or Dfa?

I don't think we'll take Claye in the national draft. That would lock him into a 2 year contract.

We can have a total of 44 senior+cat A. We currently have 37 of those. We have also committed to rerookieing Cian & Claye. Assuming both need to be cat A (which seems likely to me), then we have 5 slots in which to draft senior-or-cat-A players. So we only have room for 1, 15, 18, Ballenden, Payne.

This would leave us with 39 senior + 5 cat A, which is vaguely advantageous to us in terms of future academy bidding compared to 40 senior + 4 cat A.

But the point is, we don't have room for taking a sixth player with a late pick.

I'm not quite sure how up to date the club website is, as it has Barrett on the main list, and Eagles, Hinge and McInerney on the rookie list.

By my reckoning we currently have 32 listed players, plus Cameron and Hodge, making 34 Senior Listed players. And 4 Cat A rookies in Barrett, Eagles, Hinge and McInerney. We have no Cat B rookies at this stage. But hope to relieve a rookie exemption for Cain Hanley, so hopefully 1 Cat B rookie.

Maybe best to ask Lions_Insider as to the current state of our Senior and Rookie list.

Ha, I've just been going off Wikipedia - generally seems up to date and no senior-listed Barrett :p

That still has Matty Eagles as a Cat B - of the two he seems the more likely to retain Cat B. I've popped a question off to clarify.

I can't work out why Garner is not a top 20 pick. To me, he's the type of solid citizen that you would like to pick up with a late first or early second round pick. He might not be a superstar but I doubt he will be a "miss". I'd put L. Fogarty in the same boat.

Don't know a lot about Garner mate. Aside from being a solid citizen, what do u think his strengths and weaknesses are?

I can see no reason why Cian Hanley won't be Cat b. His origin is international, so why would that change? Surely he still fits the cat B guidelines. We wouldn't be relisting him as a rookie if he is cat A, but I don't understand where this idea has come from.

Eagles is a Cat B rookie coming into his second year. So only 3 cat A rookies. Barrett was moved to the main list on the website early in the year, but is still a Cat A rookie until we upgrade him, which seems unlikely this year.

He was international when we originally drafted him. He wouldn't be when we draft him this time.

Doesn't it depend on the definition of a Cat B rookie and how it's interpreted? His origin is still Irish, I'd say. I suspect there is no precedent here, so who knows what will happen, but I'd be surprised if he had to be cat A.

Cat B, in general, is for players pre-listed by various means, e.g. alternate sports, Irish rookies, Queensland/NSW zone picks, winning the Recruit.

If a player goes through the live rookie draft, like Hanley will be, they are put on the list as Cat A rookies.

If Cian isn't an Australian citizen, then he should still qualify. Maybe he should stand for parliament as well! Note that substantial period is not defined. Rules quoted below:

In addition to these six rookie-listed players, each club can include up to three additional players (now referred to as Category B rookies) on its Rookie List provided the player either:

• has not registered in an Australian Football competition for three years immediately before inclusion on the Rookie List;
• is an international player, meaning he is not an Australian citizen and has not lived in Australia for a substantial period;
• is a former NSW Scholarship player with that club;
• is a former International Scholarship player with that club;
• is a rookie Zone Selection for clubs based in NSW or Queensland.

IRISH ROOKIE PRE-SELECTION

Irish players can be signed directly to a club’s Rookie List under the International Player Rule and do not have to go through the draft. Previously, Irish players could not be listed as Category B rookies but took a spot on the main Rookie List.

Clubs can now list one Irish player as a Category B rookie but for each additional Irish player rookie listed, that player will be deemed to be a Category A rookie and the club will forfeit its last selection in the Rookie Draft for each additional player listed

Thanks, that make sense. But wouldn't we have the option to pre-list him again? He still seems to qualify, depending on your understanding of substantial.

He's a special case, having already spent three years on the rookie list. The AFL said we could re-list him but he'd have to go through the draft.

In theory because it doesn't lock us into a two year contract. Senior list size can be anywhere from 38 to 40. Cat A rookies from 4 to 6, with all 44 now eligible to play from round 1.

From what I’ve seen, he’s got a decent all round game. He can win the footy in tight, his kicking and decision making are reasonable, he can take a grab and he’s known as a leader. Maybe there’s a knock on his athleticism or endurance that I’m not aware of or maybe he just lacks a defining attribute?

I actually get a Berry vibe from him, both in terms of playing style and attitude.

Fair enough. Pre-listed international players are due by this Friday 2pm, so that should clear it up, though it seems like I'm the only one with any doubts. It's a bummer if he has to be cat A. Really makes pick 52 redundant.
