Look, if it is Rayner then I really hope that 15 and 18 are mids. It is our main area that we need to build and also quite positive about Berry, Hugh and Matho (even Allison on the wing) as building blocks of our future midfield. Rayner will play as a forward and he might be part of that prototypical forward line with Hippy, hopefully and then the rest small and mid types. The only one good thing is that with pick 1 we have the control of our destiny with who we draft at that pick. Bring it on.

Im with SM. He has pretty much dedicated his time to playing for the majority of time, whereas other players obviously had more commitments. How much more development is left in him compared to the other blokes who haven't been doing it as much as him.

Peak physical capacity is mid 20s - can't get there 7 years early no matter how dedicated.

I've hit my annual draft week cognitive dissonance phase that means I will hyperfocus on the perceived flaws of whoever we take and magnify the positives of everyone we don't.

Now throw them into game situation with 4 or 5 blokes pressuring and tackling them. I bet there will be new leaders in the kicking test. I'm not a huge fan of the current kicking test as it is ATM I really think it needs a lot more physical pressure added to get any real idea of a players kicking ability + kicking IQ. Any AFL player should be able to hit at least 80% of targets under zero pressure... the hard to find blokes are the ones who can still do it while under pressure.

Agree- give me a 197cm KPD thats played in a winning NEAFL Grand Final at 17 and at the Combine 29/30 Kicking test 2.99 20m Sprint and 8.39 re Agility
Im 100% with you there. I think payne is as important to get as ballenden. With andrews and hipwood our tall stocks are solid for a good many years. All qld boys too which is terrific.

Did anyone see the Footy Prophet phantom draft today? The Lions fan who is a writer there went with Rayner, L Fogarty, Nathan Murphy, C Ballenden, James Worpel and Ethan Floyd - we couldn’t match Jack Payne at 75 who went to the Roos. Who is Ethan Floyd? Seems to be a pick from nowhere

He's from Geelong Falcons - has the attributes I am hoping for in this draft . pace, efficient disposal and good decision making. Needs some physical development (but then they all do).

So, dependent on who "falls" to where and what type of player we have taken with our first two picks, he is "in the mix" for me at 18 .......and certainly at that next group of picks should they remain live (and he lasts - but I don't expect so).

This will probably change 100 times by FRI BUT....this is how i see it playing out.

1. Brayshaw
15. L Fogarty
18. J Petreculle
bid for Ballendeen afetr 25 which we match
then pick up H Brayshaw and J Payne later in the draft.

Personally I would prefer LDU but feel the high character, leadership assets of Brayshaw will nudge him over the line
Fogarty at 15 i like and if we dont take him the dogs will pounce with 16,
Petrucelle seems to be continually linked with us, looks really promising, 18 seems a bit high for me BUT will be gone by our next pick,

I think Zac Bailey's kicking problems are overstated. He hit 2 out of every 3 kicks in the champs, which included one perfect kicking game and one where he missed one target. His perceived kicking problems probably come from his game against South Australia where he couldn't hit the side of a barn and registered 4 missed shots on goal. All in all, if we draft him his kicking will probably not hold him back at the top level.

Under the bright lights of Etihad, infront of every club, scout, coach and peer, with potentially millions of dollars and a dream career on the line.. pretty big stakes and plenty of pressure to stay focussed and execute their skills if you ask me..

I would be happy with this draft. Slight overreach for Petrucelle, but he’s one I hope we are considering at 18. Is quick, as we all know, and is a great mark but had great contested numbers too and is only new to the game. Could be anything.

I really hope we get Lachlan Fogarty with one of those picks. He’s a Jet. Zippy, very clean user, evasive, prodigious tackler, great finisher around goal. Decent CP numbers. Biggest knock on him is size. Is a bit slight at the moment, but is 180cm so not too short. Would start as a small forward at AFL level.

yeh sure they would be but not the same... can't showcase their ability to angle a kick around/over an opponent for example.

All in on Brayshaw at 1. Don't like the idea of him being "too vanilla" for pick 1 that I've seen thrown around a few times. I'd rather a "vanilla" inside mid who can win the footy inside/outside and distribute cleanly from stoppage, already has shown to be a leader in high school, and isn't concerned about playing interstate, than someone like Rayner who could potentially end up purely as a high forward because he couldn't develop his endurance to play midfield.

I think if you take everything that Fages has said since the end of the season re the draft, and the types of players he wants to bring to the club in general, Brayshaw seems like THE guy. 200 gamer and future leader, he's the Andrew McGrath pick of this draft as I read somewhere.

While I prefer a midfielder with pick 1, there is something hugely exciting about a forward line led by Hipwood and Rayner.
Yeah I would prefer LDU or Brayshaw but our forward line would certainly be an exciting one - we'd just need to make sure we can actually get the ball up there in the first place!

If we take Rayner as BA suggests, I'm not sure I would want us to take Constable as well - not sure you can take 2 players with questionable aerobic capacity in the top 18. Purely looking at positions though, you would be drafting at least 2, possibly 3 midfielders depending on how they develop physically, of which Fogarty and Rayner would likely start at half forward anyway.

I think that's right, and even moreso given Mathieson will probably be in the midfield rotations a lot this year. To his credit he seems to be working hard on his endurance but I'd be worried about trying to develop too many sluggish runners at once. Zac Bailey appeals to me quite a lot as an alternative.
