I would not be upset if we took an Allen or Brander at 18, but id want us to take brayshaw over Rayner in that scenario.

It is really going to come down to who is there at 15 and 18. We have been linked to the likes of Higgins, Fogarty and Bailey. There is a common theme there with those types of players, and we should land 1 of those at 15.

How soon in this draft to you think a club will ask for extra time? Think it could happen in the first round with how unsettled it is. You would usually have a fair idea on the players available at your picks and what other clubs are likely to do, but not this year.

Should that stop us drafting someone who could be our second best key for or key back?
You keep saying that thi guy is some amazing talent. If he really is an amazing talent, he would be higher up on the boards and we wouldn't be able to grab him. There is no certainty he is going to be anything, we have an abundance of talls with more coming in the enxt few years Tzozer and some other guy iirc.
Our need is quite clearly midfielders.
If we get Rayner, he will probably be a fwd/mid, get a mid at 15 then imo we would want another mid as we would only be getting 2 at this draft

What a strange tangent.
As stated you where advocating blind loyalty, you just don't want to admit it and be called a fool.
Understandable.

I was a little harsh and quick to jump.

However these recruiters have got alot wrong.

We finished 18th with 15-100+ scores against.

Everything isn't rosy!

No, you missed the point entirely as happens often in the vagaries of internet discussion.

Usually when a person clarifies their point the reasonable response is "ah ok, cheers, communication breakdown, all good" rather than stubbornly digging in your heels and trying to insist you know more about what a person was trying to say than they do themself.

There was absolutely nothing in my post even assessing the track record of our recruiters, let alone claiming they are infallible. It was simply acknowledging that whether they get it right or not, there is a method and process behind the decisions the make, which an overemotional few sometimes seem to lose sight of.

Common old mate you where advocating blind loyalty!

Let it go!

I'm sure they rank their potential. Maybe not using letters. I'll re-phrase it. What if there was a KPP with clearly more potential than the best midfielder available.

You also didn't mention finding a balance in the types of players drafted ie. inside/outside, flankers, KPPs, speed, etc.
You don't think my reference to "fit and need" covers it?

And he might be up the board. We're all working on assumptions and hypotheticals here.

Ruling out anyone over 190cm for our first 3 picks seems unlikely to happen.

You're talking about ranking them though and taking the one that's highest based on this ranking. If pick 1 has already filled this need it needs to be updated. Breaking them down by different roles and ranking them would be required.

Don't think it has been mentioned in here but Cal having Oskar Baker going to the Dees at 30 is surprising. Good luck to him
He had a good year, was talking to a friend of his who also plays with him at Aspley - interviewed with a lot of clubs. He's got a ton of interest in him.

Word is he has knocked his missus up and doesn't want to leave WA and her family.

Not really a rumour as such -

"His cheeky, boisterous two-year old son Tykeem is about to become a big brother, with Kelly and partner of six years Caitlin expecting twin boys in January."

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2017-10-30/will-it-be-sixth-time-lucky-for-this-draft-hopeful-kelly

Given he's nominated and been overlooked half a dozen times, I think he's fine to go anywhere as he literally could have stopped nominating at any point if the family thing was true - he could've stopped before the first kid, after the first kid, or before this year's draft as the nomination deadline was last week, well after they would've found out about the twins.

In his own words:

"Don't get me wrong, it would be challenging [to move], but it's something we've spoken about a lot leading up to this and we've got a lot of support.

"I've got full confidence in me and my little family that we'll make it work. I just really hope I get a chance."

I'd be fine with drafting him but I don't think we'll get the chance.

On Oskar I know he's not a need for us but I'd happily take him at 18. Very clean user of the ball. I'm sure others would have watched more NEAFL than me but he's a very cream on top player.

Exactly the type of class we need, I am impressed with the inside guys we have developing but we're screaming out for class on the outside.

Would love him at the GABBA. Shades of McLeod in his game. I reckon the Suns will come knocking at pick 19 it's the kind of player they love.

I'm confused.

What is the argument you're trying to win here?

Looks and smells an awful lot like a Straw man.
Moved on.

Don't see the need for your nose to be stuck in.

However to be clear (as it was already) this recruiting team don't deserve loyalty let alone blind loyalty.

This recruiting team performance needs a review and a commitment to constant improvement.

First step seeing things how they are, finished 18th 15-100+ scores against and list that is the slowest in the league.

Improvement required!

Once upon a time we were pretty keen on WA draftees, seems not so much now. Anyone know who our WA scouts are?

Graeme Hadley isn't it? Think he still heads up our WA and SA scouting.

WA been pretty poor as far as talent goes the last few years. IIRC didn't they announce some big changes to the development system as the future ain't looking to good for junior WA footballers?

Club has had progressive changes to recruitment department in the past few years. The thing with club recruitment is that you just don't know how well or poorly they have performed until 3-5 years after the draft. I do agree with you on some points but those who made critical decisions 5 years ago have been moved on AFAIK.

Thanks. I had assumed he was long gone but I see from his LinkedIn profile he is till there. Shane Rogers also involved apparently.

Yeah and made a concerted effort to get some recently retired AFL players involved including Ash McGrath.

Speed and agility needs more consideration.

Last year recruits not the quickest or most agile available.(first two picks)(doesn't mean they won't make it others better)

We cannot continue like this?
