List Mgmt. 2017 draft thread

I really liked the way Richmond played this draft.
Every chance of their being a slider at 17 - grabbed Higgins. ( I thought it would be Nathan Murphy who slid right to 39 ).
We will never know if they preferred Brander to Balta or CCJ.
Can only assume they preferred Balta to Oscar Allen.
They rated CCJ over Hayes - fair enough.
I think they had always planned on taking CCJ & Balta at 20 & 25. Must have thought Balta was safe at 25 but higher risk on CCJ going before then.
They must have been extremely confident on Naish bid after 25. Could have missed Balta at 25. I would have gone Balta at 20 & preferred to risk CCJ as you can get similar type later if needed (eg Miller)

I was wondering when we took CCJ if we were hedging our bets on Naish being nominated between 21-24.
We probably thought both would be available at 25, but in case we lost that pick for Naish then we knew we needed the ruckman more

Once again selected a player with our first pick with a surname ending in N or S. That is now 8 time in the last 11 drafts.
2007 Cotchin
2009 Martin
2011 Ellis
2012 Vlastuin
2013 Lennon
2014 Ellis
2016 Bolton
2017 Higgins

Couple of key takeaways:

So during the trade period we made 2 moves; traded 15 for 20 and 25 and also swapped out our third rounder last year for a third rounder this year. Both look inspired pieces of work.

By losing pick 15 we missed the opportunity to draft Zac Bailey and Ed Richards. I don’t think we would’ve picked either at 15 and would’ve still gone Higgins as best available and then focused on talls.

Naish lasted to 34 which meant by bringing in the third rounder we protected our picks from sliding next year and only downgraded our third rounder a handful of spots. The fact we got Naish for a third round pick and a third round downgrade is amazing!

CCJ at 20 when both Oscar Allen and Sam Hayes had been the mail is interesting. Out of all those 3 I liked Allen but see why we went with CCJ as he can play forward and ruck and Allen is a risk being a third tall only

Everyone loved Balta so that was an easy one.

Miller nobody knows too much about tbh.

Also this time next year will be very very interesting for the following players:

Based on our small selections:
Castagna, Lloyd, Miles, Stengle, Townsend

Based on our tall selections:
Hampson, Griffiths, Chol

Higgins must be a special player.
His name ends with both N and S.

Higgins the best user in the draft

CCJ the best contested mark.

Balta has the most x factor.

Naish has 'one of ' the best outside games

Miller has the most experience of playing against big bodies having played as a ruckman in senior footy since 15. Finished 1st in the Agility and Goalkicking .

And they're all coming to the side that is indisputably THE BEST .

Will be traded or delisted.

Getting Higgins and two ruck prospects would have to put pressure on both Sam Lloyd and Hammer's list spots at the end of next season.
Would expect that we would cut at least 5 senior players and they would be the 2 most obvious at the moment.
Griffiths spot also.

I like our approach to the draft.

Pick 17: A slider no matter what position they play
Pick 20: A need (ruckman)
Pick 25: A need (a tall)
Pick 53 (34): F/S (outside midfielder)
Pick 55 (63): A need (a tall)

In fact, I like our approach to the entire trade/draft period. I am happy that this club has become a cool-headed club that know and address what they need. I expected them to have a two-phase replenishment of our list through the draft by taking the smalls/midfielders last year and talls/midfielders this year, and I am happy that they did that even though they won the 2017 Premiership. They did not let the Premiership blind them from what they need to pick up through the draft.

The only thing left for us to take in the draft down the track is a tall midfielder, which is something that we haven't picked up yet. It isn't a pressing need though since we have the likes of Townsend, Martin and Grigg on the list.

From his VFL form towards the back end of the season, I don't think Lloyd is completely done just yet. But it would be interesting to see what happens to the players you mentioned though.

Really pleased with this draft period. So two in a row for the tigers where it has been common sense trading and drafting to our needs.

So, the question now is, where do we want Balta and Miller playing? Are they both going forward or one goes to defence? If so, which one? Both can ruck from what I have gathered too.

I'd go Balta in defence as he is quite the versatile player and Miller in the forward line. If anything happens and Balta is required up forward, then he can do that.

2018 Depth Chart.jpg

A breakdown of our list post draft. Not often a reigning premier would have 30 players still 25 or younger on their list. It suggests that we're in for an era of sustained success. The draft also balanced out our list nicely. 4 dedicated rucks 4 dedicated KPF and 4 dedicated KPD. We also added another inside mid and some more outside class. With 40 on the senior list and 3 rookies I expect we'll take Derek Smith in the rookie draft to round out the list for the 2018 season.

I still like Townsend for the forwardline, he's that halfway height of a third tall that tackles and sets up and kicks goals.

To me the guy who is more under pressure os Castagna, but not from Higgins but by Bolton.
