List Mgmt. 2017 draft thread

Sounds as though Dereck Smith is well and truly on our radar, this article mentions we are hoping to pick him up in the rookie draft but could use a late ND pick. Had to laugh at him being labelled a mature age rookie at the ripe old age of 19

Mentions his two seasons at Bendigo Pioneers.... um 2 games actually, last year he was playing for Wentworth in the Sunraysia League.

RICHMOND is hoping 19-year-old Derek Smith slips through to the rookie draft.

Foxfooty.com.au understands the left-footer is on the club’s radar following five VFL games for the Tigers this year as their 23rd man. In the last of these matches, Smith collected 19 disposals and was excellent off half-back.

A Bendigo Pioneer, Smith is lightly built but at 186cm still has time to fill out his frame so he can compete physically with bigger bodies. Sources close to the club have suggested that Richmond is almost certain to pick him up in the rookie draft but is willing to consider parting ways with a late selection in the national draft if required.

Smith has played two seasons for the Bendigo Pioneers in the TAC Cup.

Hey Bishop do you see similarities between Sam Hayes and Tim English? Both rated around pick #8-#10 but will go very late first round?

Differences between the 2?

A stack of differences - I'd take English well before Hayes.

English was very lanky, raw, mobile, had a good leap and an elite kick.

Hayes is stronger, but lacks a bit around the ground and the running/mobility that English had.

I wouldn't be turning him down - unless it was a ridiculous bid - there's plenty to work with there. Will fit in - you've gotta remember he's coming in as a 17-18 yr old, has a 10 year + career.
When it comes to deciding who take this year, the clubs obviously have an eye on what will be available next year and even the year after.
In your opinion would the club be better off looking towards next years draft for talls such as in 2009 where we got Astbury with a third round pick? This years talls aren't really too much to get excited about imo especially in the first round where we have our picks.

It's always in the back of your mind - but as I said to someone the other day - if you wait til next year and you end up with Pick 10 and the best 9 talls are taken from Pick 1 -9, it potential doesn't help. They're still some quality players in the draft and while Richmond might not get the tall they desire this year, there is no guarantee they get it next year either.

Last year a lot of people were saying this draft class would have a lot of talls. What happened to that?

Talls are still there its just that all the best performed ones were defenders. This means the shine got taken off the forwards and everyone turns their attention to the mids.

Massive win for you guys today! Now take your picks to the draft for Naish and then grab someone like Taylor late.

Watching Naish today and he wasn't overly great, his side were beaten by 55 points, but he wasn't terrible either. Some really nice moments where he went back with the flight of the ball to compete, but on other occasions he seemed to take short steps. Not that I blame him too much. It's combine coming up soon and nobody would want to get hurt at this stage. One thing I will say is the kid knows how to find space and certainly has a bit of toe about him. Hopefully a bid after pick 17 will be what happens and we get to take 3 top 30 kids in the draft to add to our list in a year when we won the flag.

They were probably more "speculative" talls in terms of players such as Noah Balta - the best tall went to cricket. Next year's talls won't do that.

This is where bidding on all the lions academy players bites us on the ass. Lions have pick 12 and really cant see another club bidding on him. Dees might have with 10 but that pick will be at the crows. And after 12 cant see anyone bidding before out 2 picks.

Now a bid at pick 12 isnt the end of the world pick 15 just gets used but it blew any chance of no bids till after 15 and 17. Clubs have long memories

If someone could explain to me the bidding process in 50 words or less or point me to a link that does it would be greatly appreciated.

Have no idea how it works.

There's a point system. Each pick is worth a set amount of points, better pick = more points. Father son/academy kids can be bid on. The club can choose to match the bid. When matching a bid in the first round you get a 20% discount on points.

Pick 10 = 1395

To match you'd need to make up 1116 points, which our pick 15 is 1112.

After the first round the 20% discount goes away and becomes a flat 197 point discount.

Bit over 50 words but I hope it covers it ;)

They wont do that because if they do then we will be too worried we will bid on Ballenden with#17 and make them use #18
They are in the same boat as us - Plus i dont think Naish is worth #12 so Brisbane will be looking at getting inside mids

Don't believe Naish is the one in Brissy's sights at Pick 12 - they'd take Andy Brayshaw without even thinking if he was there at Pick 12 -- but gut feel says he's gone for them anyway.

Any chance Brander or Hayes will slip to us?

Yeah definitely a chance - both may even be there.

When and who do you think someone will bid on Naish and who are your top 3 players for each of our 1st round picks?

Cheers

Not sure who - maybe a North Melbourne type in the 2nd round.

Ask me after trade week - but I think a tall would be ideal, alongside some speed off HBF. Sam Hayes the ideal one at Pick 15.
