List Mgmt. 2017 draft thread

There is a few reasons for this.

These 3 players are getting games now but wont get as many games when all the GWS players are back from injury for example
Himmelberg wont be played at AFL level when the GWS team has Lobb,Cameron,Patton all playing.

These kids are about to finish their 2nd year as draftee's on min salary of $75,000 a year + $3,600 a game
So roughly if Himmelberg plays 20 games he will earn roughly $140k - But he wont play 20 games with the 3 big guns available , He would be on $300k+ if he moves as a base.

Jacob Hopper this year wont earn more than $100k but if he moves he will recieve $350k-$400k because clubs will pay more to move them, With this much pressure GWS wont be able to pay them and will lose players like Kelly and other players that are in their 21-24 year range and these are the players that they are needing to keep to have a shot at the flag. Simply GWS cant afford to pay them and players will want games and money so they need to trade them at a discount.

GWS also have Academy players to bring in and need draft picks, They dont have a 1st rounder and their 2nd doesnt have value for points, But our 2x 1st rounders are just perfect for them as its not a particular player but points required. our 2 1st rounders will have the same points value as #2

Where they were selected
#7 - Jacob Hopper
#13 - Matthew Kennedy
#16 - Harrison Himmelberg

We will roughly have #12 & #14 , So its not a massive discount for them but gives them Salary cap relief as well as 1st round picks, No club is going to offer any of these players a top 10 pick each - I really think we have a great chance to get these kids as a package but need to be really aggressive in trying to convince them to come across. I would offer all 3 of them $400k x 4 year deals

*Keep Dusty
*bring in the 3 GWS Kids
*our 3rd rounder - P.Naish
*GWS 3rd rounder - H.Balic
*Upgrade Castagna
* F/A - Levi Casboult

Retirements/Delistings
Maric,Morris,Hunt,Elton,Yarran,Broad,Hampson

Trade Table
Lennon,Miles,Batchelor,Edwards

Appreciate the depth, good post.

Hopefully Wayne Campbell will look kindly upon us at the trade table. Only issue is Kennedy and Himmelberg are NSW boys, would they leave?

Also agree on Balic for a 3rd Rd pick.

F/A Sam Reid instead of Casboult.

Broad stays on in the VFL as depth.

Edwards stays just because he's a gun and the club loves him. Will retire a Tiger.

Batchelor is probably worth nothing.

since i wrote my long piece about where i see the trade/draft period is going, things have changed immensely.

so here is my revised view

trade targets - Schache (gone, re-signed) im glad about this. has done nothing and the money being thrown around was stupid. Reid - his stocks at Sydney have just gone up again after last night, and i think we are a better chance at Tippett than reid at the moment. Fyfe - i think he re-signs with Freo.

so that means none of those 3 are likely to be at RFC next year. which leaves Jackson Trengove, Westhoff and Shoenmakers as FA talls. and i am not really keen on any of them. Trengove maybe.

Who i think will be delisted/trade bait this year.

Gone - Morris, Maric, Hampson, townsend, Hunt, Broad, Batchelor - poss Griff if his concussion issues rear again. How much money does that clear up? I reckon (without Griff) $2.5-3M per year (7 players at average $350-450k per year) sounds about right.

I think Elton will stay 1 more season as we will lose hampson and Maric and need tall cover.

I dont see many players being traded out.

So that will leave around 6-8 players to draft/trade in. 1 of them will be Pat Naish and we will upgrade Castagna.

So really, we have the ability to draft/trade in 4-6 players. I would LOVE them to throw the cheque book at Kelly. Maric, Hampsons, Hunts and Batchelors wages might be around $2.1-2.4m per year. Offer Kelly $850K (or $100k less than what we are offereing Dusty) per year, and the other $1M is still free. Probably $300-$400k of that goes do dusty's new contract.

Outs - 7 players - (~$2.8M/year)
ins - Kelly ($850k/year) - Dusty contract goes up to $900k/year. leaves around $1.6m per year (before the new CBA and after the increase of Dustys contract).

Naish and 4 kids will cost around $350K ($70k per year per player)
so that leaves around $1.3M per year. increase some other contracts and that will bring it down to about $700k left. Add in the new CBA and it'd be around $1m left.

We could afford Fyfe as well. :D

I don't think we'll cut Batchelor, if grimes or astbury went down he'd be the next in. Also with Townsend's improvement I reckon he'll be handy depth for Caddy. (although saying that when caddy missed the gws game Townsend wasn't put in)

So do I. For me he has always been a standout but never gets mentioned in the best players.
Reminds me of duncan Kellaway. Except duncan was a lefty...hardly ever gets beaten one on one and is a natural defender. Worth a rookie spot next year

It's scary guru, I was going to post that but thought I would be going too far. Definitely worth a rookie imo. I would take him over Broad.

From the D & T board.
The player SA will likely build around though is the 199cm, 98kg ruck/forward Callum Coleman-Jones. A lot of people have him in top 10 calculations, and there's certainly potential for that but I have him slightly lower down. It all depends on how he goes as a key forward for me. As a ruck, he's talented and moves well around the ground. But I don't necessarily see him as a true top line AFL level #1 ruck, however every club in the league is looking for that guy who can play as a key forward and relief ruck. He's a very strong kid and an excellent contested mark, he'll likely dominate this year on size alone. And just on the topic of talls, keep an eye on Simon Furnell from Central Districts. Came down from the country at the end of last season for a few games, he's 198cm and 94kg. But, he's from a junior athletics background and ran an incredible 15.6 beep test at the SA testing. Not yet clear at what end of the ground Brenton Phillips will develop him.

I'd keep an eye on both these.More so Furnell he sounds like another Nankervis.

I actually asked about this kid to Bishop just 2 days ago, Looks like a late 1st early 2nd type of pick but a very bad kicking action that has a few worried

Would be great to get a few picks in the mid-late 20's if we could off load Edwards,Miles,Lennon,Batchelor

Who Jones or Furnell?
Yeah just thinking about that considering we will try and use our 3rd on Naish.

Great minds think alike. If he can get to afl fitness level he would be a campaigner to play on just like the glove was

Would Toby Wooler be worth one of our first rounders? I much prefer forwards of his height rather than the 200cm type.
Would like the tigers to take a tall forward and a kpd in the first round this draft.
I reckon the 200 cm kpf are so over rated but most clubs seem to be falling over them selves to get them. Fj has been burnt badly by this exact type of player previous drafts and yet when fj drafts kpp under 196cm he has much better success.

like your reasoning, but we will need to cut multiple players this year - and mutlipe players on decent contracts. I think Batch as a role, but he should be in the 1s now, not sitting in the reserves. He's on too much money to be doing that. Same with Townsend, I think next year, when fit, Jack Graham takes that role

Sounds as though this kid has a few strings to his bow too, can rotate through the midfield which at 193 cm 90 kg is handy.

His brother plays for our ressies yes? ??
Coffield has had a couple of mentions from the reserves coach "as playing above the level" and having outstanding intercept marking ability. I posted about a month ago that maybe McRae was hinting he is worth a look as a rookie.
Re his brother, well we love kids from th the Northern Knights, maybe him Naish and petrucelli would be a nice trifecta.

Hard to argue with that trifecta

How tall is Toby Wooler? I've seen conflicting sources on how tall he actually is

192.71cm to be exact. 3rd tall at the next level - doesn't have the leap that some smaller key fwds can get away with if they lack height. Has played some midfield time - but I struggle to place him 2nd round onwards. But I get the feeling we'll use just our 2 first rounders and then match Naish.

I personally want Clavarino with one of our 1sts, where's he at and how would he fit in at Richmond/would we draft him?

It's interesting - I've got Clavarino just inside 20 - but speaking with a few people they've got him pegged as 20+, possibly closer to 3rd round than 1st.

Can pick and choose at what moments he impacts the play - marking has been good at school footy against poor opposition but has struggled against the good talls at school level.

Likelihood of having to use a 1st on Naish?

Also, I think it's almost a certainty that, if we keep both our 1sts, we'd draft a KPP and a MID. Balta and Wooller/Coffield ?
