List Mgmt. 2017 draft thread

My somewhat unconventional thoughts on how the draft may unfold.

17. Patrick Naish 180cm 69kg outside midfielder - might be surprising to see us take him here, but I reckon a lot of our talk about being uncommitted is just that, talk. I reckon we were always going to take Naish with our first pick and we've played the game well and traded down 5 spots to get an extra pick inside the top 25

20. Noah Balta 194cm 92kg KPP - Bishop reckons we're keen on him and plenty of others seem to have him lined up to land with us. Given the question marks about his ideal position I reckon he slides to 20 and we'll snap him up with the idea of making him KPF

25. Oscar Clavarino 195cm 86kg KPD - Liked the sound of this kid since early in the year and have only really heard good things about him since the combine ended. Kid takes a nice grab is a decent size and has some toe about him.

51. Derek Smith - after losing Kayle Kirby last year I reckon we'll look to add Smith to the list. Kid has some nice traits and is a decent size, not much to lose by giving him a crack at this stage of the draft.

53. Best available kid to round out the list.

Clavarino looks all class would be great to fall to us.

It wouldn't be surprising, it would be stupid. If we choose to take him at 17 we lose our discount. Every single club waits until there is a bid. We take the player we want at 17, then if Naish is bid on at 18 or 19 we use pick 20. If not bid on until 21 to 24, we use pick 25.

He might be bid on before pick 17 though meaning they have to pick him at 17.

Naish will likely be bid on before 17 anyways. If he's not I'd still take him there and give ourselves the freedom to take who we want later on.

Dodged a bullet with Kayle Kirby, no endurance to impact at AFL level. Stengle a much better prospect.
Why pick Derek Smith at 51 when we can match with our last pick in the draft or pick in the rookie draft.

Thought Naish would go 20 to 30 no?

Talk is the Doggies are interested, so expect a bid from them at 16. Even if they don't another club with a late teens pick will surely bid knowing we have traded picks specifically to match it.

My thinking is that the bid comes from either the dogs at 16 or West coast at 21. It's smart for West Coast Robbie to bid there, as it makes their picks more valuable

"If he's not I'd still take him there".That doesn't make sense. The guy we could have got at 17 may be gone by our pick 20. We'd lose out unnecessarily. It reduces the freedom to take who we want. Let it run and if good fortune comes our way and no club bids on him until after pick 25 we end up with three players we really want, as well as Naish.

As for Derek Smith, we would be fools to take him at a pick in the 50's if there has been no bid for him. We just wait until there is a bid, and if no bid comes, we can add him to our rookie list prior to the rookie draft.

You have to take advantage of the discount offered to father/sons or academy zone players. To do otherwise is foolish.

Yeah Richmond should wait until they have to pick Naish. Draft other guys first. I don't feel like he's worth pick 17, this draft is shallow but Naish is fairly one-dimensional and his type can be found in other drafts. He reminds me of Menadue who went second round. He also reminds me of Hill who I don't think would have been picked at two today given teams now like to pick balanced midfielders especially in the first round.

Would be extremely suprised if west coast let him slip past #13
Do West Coast need Allen? I know he's a local but they've drafted interstate kids before and their first round pick in the past three drafts has been from interstage (Venables, Partington and Duggan). I'd be drafting an inside midfielder with some pace if I were them.

I can see us continuing with chasing pace, wouldn't be surprised to see Naish, O'Brien, petrucelle added, with the addition of a tall

The Dogs might go Naish at 16. But given the guys that are likely to be around that pick I suspect they might not go then with the risk that they might get Naish and miss someone they rate higher. After that we are winners. If we are very lucky Naish drops beyond 25. but I wouldn't expect that in a shallow draft.

Sound like we are planning on going tall - mobile and like to by physical. I reckon that seeing what Jack if doing might have led a rethink on what you want from a KPF with a small forward line. If the guy can get to contests and add pressure then you're half way there already. We don't use a traditional KPF at all now. So why draft one? Balta sounds like he could fill an nonconventional KPF role quite well actually.

The names Naish, Allen and Balta keep coming up.

I know this is a tough one, but of the current AFL players who do these three look like they could be compared to in the future?

Balta is possibly who the Dogs are after. They traded up to 16 so they must have a player in mind at that pick (hopefully not Naish). Expected to delist Cranberry and Cloke due to announce his "retirement" so could be a KPP that they are after at 16.

Possibility they bid on Naish at 16 then take Balta at 17, that being said, I'm not sure they would risk Richmond not matching thereby landing Naish and missing Balta. So, safety first, they take Balta at 16. Next likely bid on Naish would be WC at 21

51 would be our last pick in the draft unless we delist some players.

So it it likely that we'll have to use 17 for Naish? I was hoping we could keep 17 and use 20/25 for Naish.

Josh Schache came into the football club, Tom Campbell as a ruck-forward was someone who was likely to be traded, that didn’t happen. Right now he has got Jordan Roughead, Schache, Jack Redpath, Tom Boyd and Campbell in front of him. Tim English is a young kid who they want to play. We would need four-or-five injures to those key talls.

Yep, but I reckon they're a bit thin in defence and from what I see Balta is possibly the best defender at that range. I personally hope he slides to us at 17, would be a great fit

Good point. But they got Schache and so don't really need another young KPF right now. Unless Schache fails. Two top quality KPF both with possible mental issues. High risk, high reward. Or maybe, Incredibly high risk, high reward.

Just looking at the draft boards I can't really see that Naish is worth it before about 16. There, if you really want a very outside run and carry player then he makes sense. If he had contested ball and defensive pressure he would be top 10 easily. But given our game plan is based around contested ball and pressure he isn't the main game, but a useful role player. Interesting logic for the drafting guys. If any team reckon they can add that pressure and contest to his game then he's well worth a bid. if not then he drops.

Way to early to write Kirby off. The guy has so much upside, all down to professionalism, but has talent to burn. Smith is a running half back (and closer to 182cm than 186cm as listed. Would be the lightest framed player on our list). Good mover though.
