I'm sorry _RT_ but I think you've got the wrong end of the stick,I fully understand where you're coming from but I think you;re missing a fundamental here.

Let's say we take Naish at 17, all good cos he was picked in AA under 18's,but what if someone like Balta (whoever) is available? We still get the option of taking both if we dont take Naish at 17, cos if he's bid on 18 or19 then we can match at 20. So take Balta at 17 then use 20 for Naish, in your scenario, if we take Naish at 17 then we lose the option of taking (someone like) Balta. We have to wait for a bid otherwise we miss out on best available.

Sorry, but I'm having trouble explaining the intricacies
 
You see RT, what your saying is basically like a episode of the 3 stooges, where they bartered to pay more and still thought, what a great job we did.
Were not going to volunteer to pay more, it would bring back richmondy jokes, imagine the headlines, PISSED TIGERS arrogantly pay more than needed for naish.

Say it's Balta we want and we use 17 on Naish and the Lions use 18 on Balta we've just shot ourselves in the foot.

If we use 17 on Balta we are not relying on others not to pick him and we get Naish regardless.

What if we don't have a KPP that we rank around the 17 mark available, should we then reach for one who we might rank 23rd on our list just so we can say we got Naish on the cheap. That is what I'm trying to convey, quite poorly admittedly.

The only way we're paying more is if we rate Naish at 30 and take him at 17. Most experts have Naish in the 15 -20 range of the draft so paying 17 is pretty much market value. Like I said I can understand the want to get him as late as possible, I just don't see it happening.
 
Allen will be a bust IMO.

Brander, Balta and Callum-Jones seem ok.

Anyone have Callum-Jones' sprint times?

What if Balta is gone and the next 2 KPPs we have on our list are rated 23rd-30th on our list do we reach for them so we can say well at least we got Naish cheap. My ideal draft is landing Naish as he'll add to our young midfield brigade coming through, while also adding 2 KPPs or a KPP and a Ruck with our 3 picks inside 25. The way a lot of the phantom lists are starting to shape up a kid like Balta may not be available at 17 as he'll already be gone. So rather than reach for a kid we rate down the order I would hope they take Naish and then give themselves the chance to take the KPPs we need in the second round where you can afford to draft for need rather than simply go best available.

Take the highest ranked player that is not Naish. Let the other clubs decide Naish's market value.

I personally can see him sliding past 20 and maybe 25, no club is going to take him to spite us its a shite strategy. Only if they actually value him at that spot will any club take him and because he is F/S clubs won't spend as much valuable time and money scouting him like they would other players, Top 20 picks are too valuable and training draftees too expensive.

I understand the desire to take him later in the draft and like everyone else I'm hoping it happens that way, but I have a feeling that what will end up happening is that we'll take Naish at 17 and give ourselves the opportunity to target a couple of KPP types with 20 & 25. I’m normally on the same page as you, but not this time. Taking him at 17 when we don’t need to doesn’t make sense.
We may rate him at 17 but if he falls down the order, why on earth would we take him early? It’s better for us. We can still target the key position players we want, and we might even get lucky and snag a slider.

Getting a sore brain reading the last two pages.

We wont be taking Naish at 17 unless our hand is forced.
We will most likely take best available player at each pick, as per our rankings (aside from Naish) and once ank opposition club bids on, then we will use a pick/picks to match.

When pressure small forwards are at premium, it will be hard for KK to get a game. He will need a big increase in endurance to make it to the next level. Would be good to get Derek Smith as a Cat B rookie, hopefully he will slide that far.

Im of the belief that clubs wont be bidding on naish until the mid 20's as they know that we will be taking him with 1 of our picks and they dont have anything to gain by bidding on him. They would all be aware that it would be seen as just making us use the pick and all clubs would be thinking what goes around comes around and if seen to be seen to be bidding just to make you use the selection it will come back to bite you.

Out of curiosity, have you seen Allen play? Why do you think he will be a bust? Few experts have us taking him with our first pick

but didn't we do that to teams in the past. there is nothing underhanded in doing it.

You must be thick. Why would you give up a 20% discount by drafting Naish before you were forced to. Dumb post. Makes absolutely no sense. We could miss out on a player we hoped to draft if the club did what you've said. Thankfully none of our recruiting staff has half a brain like yourself.

Think what you are saying here. You are advocating that we should or may pay more than we would be required to.
 
If Naish doesnt get a bid before #25 and we get our 2 kpp and Ed Richards is still available i wouldnt mind this kid

Hard running BP/HBF with good speed and nice left peg, Kid has talent and reminds me a bit of Liam Picken and would be a good addition to play both midfield and small back

Whew! From what I read into what you're saying is that we miss on Naish if we don't bid, that's not the case. It's a matter of taking the best available at all picks, he's guaranteed, but why eliminate ourselves from best available when we don't have to?
Understand I'm not dissing your opinion, I would like you to get ya head around what myself and everyone else is saying

Dont think we bid on any Father Sons , We bid on Kennedy & Hipwood who were both Academy picks and although works the same bidding system its generally been the way that you leave the FS selections to later to give teams who will take them some value

Most had Wallis / Libba and SOS kid to go slightly earlie than they did and the same with Collingwoods 2 kids last year Brown & Daicos

Hoping they dont bid until after #29
