List Mgmt. 2017 draft thread

Fox has us selecting Balta even with Brander still available.
PICK 17: RICHMOND — NOAH BALTA
Clubs: Calder/Vic Metro
Position: Key Defender/Key Forward
Size: 194cm, 92kg

Bio: Balta doesn’t just have one of this year’s best draft names. He’s also a reliable key-position player who can occupy roles at either end of the field. He played in defence throughout the Champs, where he held some important lockdown roles. At 194cm, he was able to intercept and showcase his speed in transition. However, it’s forward where he sees his future. He kicked multiple goals in four of his past eight TAC Cup games this season. He also averaged 15 disposals and 4.3 marks per match with the Cannons.

Why: The Tigers would love to be picking here, rather than having to match an earlier bid for father-son prospect Patrick Naish. Should they still hold this selection, expect them to look for the best key-position player available — and Balta might be that man. He can play forward or back, giving them real versatility. Sam Hayes and Brander might also be in the mix.

Brander would still be there at 20 if it played out like that.Imagine getting both Balta and Brander, would be massive. Groom one as a key defender and one as a key forward

Should we not be looking at this guy if available;

"Nathan Murphy has been dominating in football at school level, including a seven-goal haul in Brighton's win over Geelong Grammar earlier this season, where he spent time on fellow first-round prospect Jarrod Brander."

Surely Brander isn't there at 17 or 20 if the below is his usual output

reminds me a bit of N Riewoldt

Great mark, and looks like he could be a big boy when older. Amazing if he slips.

I keep hearing about KP players Brander, Balta and Allen, however, there has been no mention of Toby Wooller. Can anyone tell me where he'd be rated in the draft? He looks like a real natural footballer and mobile. Seems that he is the KP player that has advanced the most in 2017. Does anyone know if he was at draft camp.

Inside football draft guide 2017 has him @ Second Round

RICHMOND

Gary Buckenara says: Despite the form of Toby Nankervis this year I still think the Tigers need to bolster the ruck department. Shaun Hampson will return from after an injury-plagued season next year and could be the No. 1 ruckman with Nankervis as a forward/ruckman because I think he can thrive in that role. We saw this year the former Swan’s marking prowess around the ground and there’s no reason why he can’t do that inside forward 50 — he may just need to improve his endurance. He’s also pretty mobile for his size.

Hampson is a great tap ruckman, statistically one of the best in the AFL (he was ranked in the elite category for his tap work in 2016 — winning the hit out from 52 per cent of contests and a hit out to advantage from 16 per cent, the fourth-best percentage in both categories from players who contested at least 20 ruck contests per game according to Champion Data), who can really add more potency to the midfield mix, giving Martin, Cotchin and Prestia first use. So if those two are playing, Ivan Soldo is the back-up and I’d like to see another developing ruckman come onto the list.

Using Hampson as the No. 1 ruckman with Nankervis forward will also help the structure up forward alongside Jack Riewoldt and the small forwards. I still think Richmond needs another tall inside 50 to help Riewoldt despite the success of the smaller forward line this year.

The Tigers also need more outside speed. They are well off for inside players but more run and dash off halfback would be ideal.

The hit out to advantage stat needs a rework. Should be clearances won and lost, as we got bugger all advantage from his hitouts last year.

Is it looking possible we could add 3 of Brander, Balta, Allen, Hayes?
Round it out with Naish as well.

Sam Hayes
Sam is interesting because in 5 years he could be the best ruckman ever or some people think he might be on the scrapheap by then.
- Eastern Rangers coach Darren Bewick

If we could get Balta @17, Brander @20 and Hayes @25, our tall stocks going forward suddenly look very good. Add Naish and another couple of mids/flankers in the rookie draft and we'll have a pretty good haul.

B: Vlastuin Astbury Grimes
HB: B.Ellis Rance Houli

That seems to be the vibe about him. Super talent, with (by what people seem to say) is a poor work ethic. If you reckon you can switch him on you've got a great ruck, mark, below knees with skills. But if you cannot switch him onto hard work then goodbye AFL. I'd like ot see us get him at 25 if he's still there and we've taken what we can. Especially if Naish hasn't been bid on he'd be a great gamblers pick. If it works then amazing If not then we've not lost much.

#17 - Balta (He's the player i want most)
#20 - Brander / Allen would be happy with either player but if there is midfield ability in Allen then he would be my choice
#25 - Brander or Allen if still available (probably impossible) Sam Taylor / Ed Richards

#29 - Patrick Naish

Would be a great result. If we have the choice of Balta or Brander at 17 we have to take Balta as I believe GC are very keen.

Pretty much everyone has Balta going at 17 to us, which I would be very happy with. Freakish athletic ability and does a lot of things very well, while having a few things he has to work on. Taking his natural talent though, and moulding it under the guide of Rance, Rutten and Leppa is a pretty tantalising thought.

Nek Minut - Doggies bid #16 for Naish - We match
#17 Doggies select Noah Balta
Keep in mind we may not even take Naish as yet, it says in the Y&B book that we need to seperate the heart from the head (re: matching a bid) & make sure that we rate him properly.

If Clubs want to bid just to "keep us honest" they want to make sure they actually rate him as if we don't match they will be stuck with a kid they don't rate & one who may request a trade to Tigers in 2 yrs time.

With picks between 17-25 we are sure to take him
Thats why we traded down
