2017 Fixture Discussion

So the full 2017 fixture is released on Thursday. We already know we have the Bombers in round 1 at the MCG as an away game.

So what are your hopes and predictions out of the fixture this year? These are mine.

With the AFL now owning Etihad - I hope it means there isn't as much pressure to play big drawing games at Etihad as much. With this in mind, I would hope that any game against Carlton or Essendon, and now that they are premiers even the Doggies would be played at the MCG.

I would even be happy enough to maybe sacrifice one home game against an interstate side at Etihad in lieu of maybe getting another 2-3 away games at the G compared to previous seasons.

In terms of double ups, I am hoping that we draw Geelong once more as only one home and away game last year wasn't befitting of our rivalry. I don't think we'll get Essendon twice based on their ladder position last year. I think we'll only get both of the WA teams once - hopefully with a home game at the MCG for the West Coast game. I think our other double ups will be against Adelaide (due to ladder position and the fact that we'll likely play a Thursday game against them for ratings), Sydney for the same reasons as Adelaide, Collingwood because the AFL likes making money and possibly the Bulldogs. Possibly an outside chance of us playing against the Giants twice instead of the Bulldogs.

In all - last year we only had 12 games at the MCG - if we can get that closer to 14-15 this year I will be pretty happy.

AFL will certainly fixture us against the giants twice

What's the bet they would make our home game the Sunday twilight game as well. Can't wait for that bumper 25,000 crowd.

Id presume who ever we lost to this year we will play twice next year. Guarantee we play dees, giants, swans, cats, all twice.
Aswell as any team the afl think will be the 'up and comer' twice, prob like saints or suns.
Im hoping we have less sunday twilight - for 1. So i can go and 2. So we can quit other teams bitching bout how we have the most members but always draw low crowds.
The crap sunday twilight is a big issue for families and the like to get along.
I doubt we get any saturday 2pm games

Please as few Sunday games as possible, they are killers when you work nights.
Need to sleep Sunday arvo and cant have a beer.
Can get away with 3 or 4 sickies but not much more.

Wouldn't mind Brisbane in Brisbane on a Saturday night.

Would be comical after such a long break to get two years at the Gabba in a row.

Hopefully a game at Metricon is on the cards. Would be great to see Jaeger have a 30+ touch game, kick a few goals and truly show Cochrane that it's all 'water under the bridge' in the best possible way.

Cats and Swans twice seems highly likely as they are our biggest rivals outside of Essendope. A third double up against another top 6 team is probable given our fixture the past few years (WC for mine so the AFL can milk the Mitchell v Hawks matchup).

Cats, Swans, WC, Essendon and either North or Dees.

We'll play Port in Adelaide, GC and Freo in Tassie and GWS at Spotless.

West Coast, North and Dees all finished* in the middle group (7th-12th) so we will only get one from that middle group as we finished* 5th.

*after finals.

Nice one Cryptor, that would be a dream fixture. No trips to Perth and one to Adelaide to face Port. No games in Melb for the whole of July will piss a few off ;)

That's nothing. We went about 4 weeks without a game in Melbourne this year, and about 7 weeks without a game at the MCG over June and July.

In hindsight I should have put us against West Coast at the MCG in round 23 in case it is Mitchell's final game.

Also you missed quite a few of the away interstate fixtures. Lions at GABBA, Crows at AO, Sydney at SCG, GWS at Spotless, Lions at GABBA. The first three in succession over round 17-19. With our 4 games in Tassie this means we travel 9 times - which is probably on the very high end for any Vic based side.

All in all this is a pretty difficult fixture as we play every interstate side except the Perth sides away. We have multiple double 6 day breaks. And also have double ups against Essendon who are only in the bottom bracket due to the player bans, and Melbourne who are on the rise.

If we got this fixture it would be quite challenging (which can be good). I'm not sure how it is considered comercially for us either with about 5-7 expected to give us good returns.

Two certainties:

1. We cop another brutal fixture
2. Both NSW franchises receive cushy draws

I like that the $wines have to play GWS twice this year - that little former benefit is coming back to haunt them now.

Hey guys sorry for the intrusion.

Have heard we play in Melb round 6 possibly against you guys. Just wondering if any of you can confirm this?

As much as we would get smashed wouldn't mind playing you guys at the G as it has only happened once in the last decade.

I guess once every 9 years is all we get at the GABBA then :(
