  • Midfielder/forward Riley Knight has turned plenty of heads with his performances on the training track over the summer. He took out the Crows' first 2km time trial as he attempts to force his way into the club's best 22
  • Former Gold Coast star Harley Bennell is still working his way back from a setback with his "good" left calf last November. Bennell is steadily building his running program, though, and the Dockers are confident he will play "a great deal" this year after missing all of last season
  • draftee Ben Ainsworth have also been among the most impressive Suns.
  • Last year's club champion Toby Greene is flying, and has no signs of being satisfied with his breakout 2016 season. The 23-year-old has looked sharp during match simulation work, and looks as fit as ever after finishing around the top five in both of the club's 3km time trials either side of the Christmas break. Greene is set to reach the 100-game milestone early in the season and with the arrival of former Tiger Brett Deledio - who has also been impressive at his new club – the clever forward looks set to again be a damaging player for the Giants.
  • Star forward Steve Johnson is still yet to be given the green light to rejoin the main group on a full-time basis after thumb surgery, but the veteran has been able to do plenty of running, and should be right to play in the latter part of the JLT Community Series.
  • Youngsters Mitch Hannan (shoulder) and Lachlan Filipovic (Achilles) are being eased back into contact-based training
  • Ben Brown (knee) is unlikely to play any pre-season games but could yet be fit for round one, while Jed Anderson (shoulder) will be sidelined for the next two months after undergoing surgery this week. Taylor Garner (hip) and Jy Simpkin (leg) are also expected to have delayed starts to the season after being conservatively managed over the summer.
  • Star forward Jack Riewoldt has been compromised this pre-season after a right ankle reconstruction and two bouts of surgery on the little finger on his right hand.
  • After struggling last year to make an impact matching his serious talent, Jack Billings looks set to consistently deliver the form he has shown only in glimpses thus far. The 21-year-old has been involved in full training this pre-season, something he has not always been able to do
  • Another to catch the eye at training has been Blake Acres. The West Australian looks poised to take the next step, with his big body sure to come in handy if he spends more time in the centre square.
  • Veteran Drew Petrie's work ethic at training has been remarkable and he is on target to play round one against former club North Melbourne, while trimmed-down draftee Willie Rioli is also in the mix to debut following some electric displays on the track
  • Recruit Travis Cloke looks slimmer and ready to prove he still has plenty to offer at senior level following the key forward's disappointing end to his time at Collingwood.

Jamie Elliot as a POD anyone?

As a stepping stone he could make around 150+k with a good run (95 avg or thereabouts over first 8 rds, say), which he has managed before.

But we don’t have an easy early fixture, he may take time to find his feet and if he stalls, he's in no-man's land price-wise. Saw better value elsewhere.

In terms of alternatives, guess blokes like Knight 100k cheaper, CEY / Hrovat around the same price, e.g., depending on how it's looking for them come rd 1.

I'm still super keen on either Toby Greene or Devon Smith
Need to see some JLT action to see if they get a solid run through the middle

Both wont get enough time in mid. GWS mid is stacked and too hard to break into, plus Greene's disposal lets him down too much for him to get a perm spot in their mids.

Personally staying away from both.

What average would you expect if you started one of them?
I think Greene will average minimum 90 again, but I'd expect 92-100
Devon a little lower, 88-94, which I'll happily take at F5/F6 for a cost of $440k

Don't want a permanent spot in the midfield, they're both good goal scorers
Stints through the middle and up forward, with ~20 touches and a goal or 2 a game, and you've got yourself a 90-100 average

Those averages would suggest that you'll be able to grab them later at a price close to their starting price. With a few options around 500k that are more likely to hit 100, I'd be looking at the Giants as upgrade targets. Hard to predict how the points will be spread around with so many guns at GWS.

Thinking Billings as a POD F3/F4.

Fully fit now, Saints will be better this season.

Thoughts?

Has the left foot for supercoach, ie long and classy disposal, but then I said that about Nick Suban 5 years ago, and when he crushed the finish to 2013 I was all over him.....

but I digress

awkwardly priced, apparently tearing up the preseason, need to see 90+ out of him, not sure he can manage that week out week in but he certainly will give you positive value for dollar spent. Worth a watch in the JLT for role.

i cant bring myself to not pick Riewoldt. 10yrs+ of autoselect. Even won me my league last yr.
Nice easy start and no captaincy burden. Can do what he damn well likes. Could break down or win the brownlow.
It aint easy to leave him out but cant believe how pricey he is ...and why the F didnt he get DPP status this yr ? That would at least give me half a reason to buy him.
Its gonna feel a bit weird without him. Whinge complete.

The thing that makes me pick him is we'll be better this year than we have in a very a long time.

Roo's got unfinished business, so I don't see a low 90's avg when we were at rock bottom - 13/14

Good luck to who ever is playing on him in the finals - if we were to make it

Even at that price tag I'm liking him at F1, has a dream run at Etihad early where he scores better.

He will go well early with the fixtures hes got but having him means your going to have to sacrifice a bit in other positions because of his price. He always has a lull at some point in the season whereby his price will bottom out and i would prefer to wait until that happens to get him. Theres every chance hell drop to around 500k or possibly less at some stage
