I tend to agree there, no way in hell we screwed GC with Bennell. It was fair. What's subsequently happened with Bennell is on Freo as a club, not GC.
Bennell had calf injuries in both 2014 and 2015 that meant he didn't play full seasons at GC. Hell the only time he did play a full year at GC was in 2012. Yet his chronic injury problems were never fully addressed by that club. Its not as if GC doesn't have form for not fixing chronic injuries.

There is a little bit of gen Y 'work life balance' in there though - 'theres more to life than footy'

And sure there is, but when you're paid a half mill a year for what could be anywhere from a 5-10 year block on average to set yourself up for the remaining 60 years of your life - working away for a short time isn't such a big deal. Entitled ****s.

One part of me says 'good on them' and another part says 'harden up'

Yes a couple of things going on there....that and his girlfriend calling the shots .....thus not so good for us to hang out hat on as a Freo committed player long term anyway.

He has been away from home and now he can have both. So seriously why wouldn't you. I did my 12 months in the country as a pre-requisite for my job and while I really enjoyed it, I went home soon after my time was up. Esperence is closer to Perth than Perth to the Eastern states.

I agree. He gets offered a shed-load of cash to work in the town that he prefers. Its nothing more sinister than that.

He didn't want to come in the first place and his partner would also prefer to be home.

Yeah i dont think anyone can be angry at the poor young fella, its no different to what we have done int he past with local lads and bringing them home. We just have to make sure we get the most out of the trade that we can. I hope for him that he can get to Gold Coast as it is where he wants to be and i have already started thinking about how we can use pick 2!

I don't begrudge the whole work life balance thing, I am Gen Y too and its definitely important. The thing that puzzles me is that it really seemed like Lachie had that here. Why build a house then? He had so much going on outside of footy here. Promo model, girlfriend getting sweet promo deals too. Always taking photos at the beach. They seemed to love loving here.

Just bizarre. Which is why I call BS on family reasons and/or not getting the right balance here. It is all money and profile boosting driven. He's been promised as their marquee player etc. His girlfriend likes the sound of boosting her profile too. Nothing else.

Then again I don't really know these people at all....

I understand that but he has said that his family will all end up at Gold Coast, all of his high school friends are there, his girlfriend is from there and her family are all there. It would feel a lot more homely than Perth does to him considering he has moved around a fair bit.

I just imagine a really good offer came up sooner than expected so he wants to leave now. They were always heading back East at some point. They travel a lot. Maybe they just felt like they were on a holiday over here for a while.
