Apart from the big names (Gibbs, Fyfe, Martin, etc), the following players are on my want list:

Dom Sheed
Christian Salem
Connor Blakely
Jake Kolodjashnij
Harrison Himmelberg
Matthew Kennedy
Zak Jones

Maybe:
David Swallow (big ??? over his body)
Alex Neal-Bullen (great aggression, can find the ball, skills a bit lacking)
Tim Broomhead (talented but injury prone, man bun)
Ben Keays (not big stats but goes about it the right way)
Lukas Webb (not going to get a look in unless they have a pile of injuries)

Doubt any of the ones in the first list are available, but I'd be enquiring with their managers.

Adelaide has some homesickness opportunities. That's the main advantage we have.
It hurts us with the majority of kids for sure, but there's some who would prefer it. I've lived in Adelaide, Melbourne and a few places in the US - prefer Adelaide hands down, both now as an old bloke and when i was a kid.

I wonder if we shouldnt put more focus on indigenous communities? Seems like for some of the kids that have trouble transitioning to Melbourne, the smaller city + established indigenous support past and present makes us a good fit.

'Missing out' on Polec should be a worry for two reasons

1) Unable to attract a target - because we missed out
2) Unable to identify talent - because he sucks

We spent time chasing him. Put cap room aside for him. Presumably put other options aside because THIS is what we decided we needed.
We have no idea what we really thought about Polec - other than the fact that Port pursued him harder than us.

That's fine, but then don't spend time chasing him.

Missing out on Gibbs is also no issue by itself. Except that we didn't get someone else instead - if he's not that good and would have cost too much, then who's the better but cheaper option? Why isn't that guy playing for us?
Don't spend time chasing him? It's their ******* job. They at least have to sound them out.

Their job is to understand the needs and plans of every player in the AFL, to ascertain their availability and interest, and then to gauge their value to us.
Identify & acquire.

No need to understand the needs and plans of players we don't rate at all.

If Polec sucks, as others have been arguing here, target someone else. If we like Polec but it turns out to be too expensive then move on to Target #2. Same for Gibbs.

It's been reported anecdotally about Polec that we blew the interview, and again, what players have done since arriving isn't relevant to the fact that Port went out and got them in the first place, ahead of other suitors who were also fighting for their services. Their subsequent up and down form has no bearing on our own failures in trade month.
It's also been reported "anectdotally" that Polec never had any intention of signing with Adelaide, and that he was just using us to drive up his contract offer from Port. These two anecdotes aren't mutually exclusive.

So the players we identify are rubbish but we're crap at getting them so everything works out fine?

We eventually recruited/drafted in some outside run, just unfortunately wasted a couple of seasons before we did

Now we've got a glaring need for some ready-made midfield quality and we've sat on our hands again. Fingers crossed that organic growth can cover it and there have been some positive signs but I fear we'll regret our inactivity last trade period.
Or it's a case of BF putting 2+2 together and coming up with 658, as usual, while the club quietly gets on with the job of recruiting players they are actually interested in, at a price they're willing to pay.

Correct me if I'm wrong, we had nothing to trade for him. Port gave up 2 high picks and received a couple of lower picks plus Jarrod. This was the year we traded Bernie for pick 23 just to get back into the draft. we picked MCrouch and R Knight with our first pick in the 40's. Also we had Sanderson. Would you come to a club he coached. Also I think Eddie B came that year. Hartigan and Laird were upgraded that year. Considering sanctions and all I think we came out ok.

I don't think we were anywhere near as serious about him as our resident Collingwood loving troll seems to think. Polec's lack of interest in Adelaide, and Adelaide's lack of trading commodities, both probably had a part in our lack of interest.

Players don't give two shits about the trade capital, they make their decision entirely based money, football, and some off field factors. They don't get two contract offers, and then accept the one with worse personal terms because the team has higher picks to trade - this is why a bidding war between two clubs doesn't change anything for the club losing the player.

I recall hearing at the time we asked Matthew Wright and Mackay if they wanted to go to Brisbane for Polec and both said "No".

Not sure what's going on with Broomhead. Has looked decent this year, but the Pies drop him for Wells anytime he's ready to play.

Not sure if he's a huge need though. Would fall into that Knight/Menzel/Greenwood role, not sure if that's an area to focus on. Think we need a genuine midfielder, not another half forward who might be able to rotate into the middle.

Broomhead sucks. Don't want him on our list for even a twentieth-round pick. List clogger.
